As a local, I appreciate your choices of activity - not the usual stuff. Go out! Explore! Experience! There is much more to places than people think. And Hawai’i island has a lot to see if you look/ask. Keep up the great vids. Learning a lot from the Japan ones.

YOU, my friend are the kind of visitor that all of us islanders appreciate and welcome with open arms - which is WHY the locals were SO hospitable of you. You were even spot on with your pronunciation of “musubi”, but you messed up on “nori”....but das OK because dats the way Hawaii is, respectful of other cultures. Thanks Gareth for showing the reforestation efforts and planting that koa tree. The native forests, especially the ohia trees, are dying and need all the help they can get.
Brings back memories of my family and heritage on O'ahu. I've been there 17 times but really miss the simplier times when I was young and spending time with my grandparents see all the little gems around the island a much slower pace and sleeping in the Lanai outside with the soft gentle rain and clean ocean air. been there, and LOVE the MIXED fish Poke-so good. get there very early, they run out quickly. love those Giant Banyan trees at Rainbow Falls-and boiling pots. I had the bacon loco moco, and the miso mai mai plate. Do Not order just a burger with gravy- order the LOCO!-my son was disappointed and still hungry.

Gareth - Great video and I enjoyed your mix of activities and food that you shared. Like you, I am planning for my first trip to Hawaii. One thing I have learned is that you say "Shave" ice (not "Shaved" ice).
If you are traveling south through Kona I highly recommend Kayas Kawanui coffeehouse and restaurant! Amazing food, baked goods, and Kona coffee which is the best coffee I've ever had anywhere. I still crave their breakfast sandwiches often!
Thank you so much for returning to civilization, to the real world. I think your goal is to try every dish in the world...at least once. I don't think I've ever seen someone enjoy so many different types of food.

Amazing, I was at the same places and I remember everything!!! But I recommend to visit also the Volcanoes Park, Mauna Kea Observatories and to burn the calories hike in Waipio, Pololu lookout, green beach and Mauna Loa! I just love this island to eat and to walk!!
What about the volcano park of Kiluea, Kiluea Iki, and Kahala pana beach. the Lava Tubes, and even Kapoho, where the volcano vent came up in the night in the middle of the General Store. I was 11 years old, and hiked up the cone and melted my tennis shoes !

I have to laugh at your first comment eating loco moco. I was just on the Big Island last week spending most of my time in the Hilo area. When I tried the loco moco I was very dubious. My first statement was the same as yours. It tastes so much better than it looks. We went to Suisan's three times. First for the poke and twice more to get fresh ono and fresh oikule to cook for dinner. Hilo is my favorite though the snorkeling is better on the Kona side.
I watched this video to see if things still were as I remembered it. Go got lau-lau, done the right way it’s ono (Hawaiian for delicious/good). You were also supposed to go to one of the coffee farms in Kau.
