A pōwhiri (called a pōhiri in eastern dialects, and pronounced [ˈpɔːʔwiɾi] in the Taranaki-Wanganui area) is a Māori welcoming ceremony involving speeches, dancing, singing and finally the hongi. Join us at the Polynesian Cultural Center to see this traditional practice in person.

This channel is one of my favorites. I've learned so much about Polynesian cultures and it makes me yearn to learn more.

As a haole living on the east coast, the resources I have for learning about Maori, Hawaiian and other Polynesian cultures is so limited. This channel is like a little portal to a world I am always searching to learn more about. This video is particularly special to me though; this is anthropology in motion. Ive always wanted to know and understand this ceremony. This video finally gave me a foot in the door of understanding it. Ive said it before but ill keep saying it, thank you from the bottom of my heart for making these videos.

Interesting that the Polynesian Cultural Center is operated by The Mormons, the Church of the Latter Day Saints. The Mormons, more than any other proselytizers, helped destroy the Polynesian Culture. Not only through disease, but changing their way of life. If they were portraying real Polynesians they would not be modestly dressed, and certainly not Christians. The Christian Zealots were shocked to see the locals having sex in unorthodox wars, hence the missionary position. The Mormons also have a belief that the Polynesians validate their faith, the Polynesians being Lamanites, central to Mormon Dogma. This led to the concentration of Mormon missionaries and conversion efforts in Polynesia.
