As seasoned Skye visitors we have some suggestions for you. When its windy head low and avoid the coast (if you can). We have had empty beer crates hit our vehicle and at times struggle to open the doors! As for hot tips .... the Aros Centre (Portree) has a tree shadowed car park. Go round to the foot of the Cuillins Hotel and there is a public car park on the shore also shaded by tall trees. At Staffin there is the public car park at the harbour/port. Also there in Staffin is the Columba 1400 Centre (check opening times). Head over to the Skeabost to the ancient graveyard, with free parking at the Local Hall. Talisker Distillery at Carbost is a great spot as is Portnalong just up the road. Great food spot is Stein (waternish). Finally, there are lots of spots around Dunvegan. Enjoy the island and remember it's all about the clothes not the weather.
Fellow Motorhomers……. A thought about advertising park- ups on a public forum. I,like you, like to wild camp and have found some wonderful places to park in Scotland. You and I are responsible motorhomers finding it more difficult to get free park ups. The big problem about showing these places is hire van fleets. Potential hire van campers glean this information and plan their break around free park-ups, what they don’t research is where to empty their waste. I have witnessed first hand hire vaners breaking the wild camp code on numerous occasions. High summer is the worst time for it. Because they think they can `just get a site for the night’ to empty and fill they think they have it sorted. Well in summer all sites in the highlands are mostly fully booked out. These people then panic as the red light is on on their cassette this is when they dump the waste at park ups at night and leave everyone else tarred with their brush. Motorhomers will always find somewhere to park, even if it’s on the street so please don’t give out info on park ups when on RU-vid.
Can’t imagine why anyone would want to holiday here in the winter ? Horrendous weather , horizontal rain week after week , 6 hours daylight ! You ought to try living here 😂 Many people do and only manage one winter
Campbell I don't drive but you and Gemma have made old lad happy this is first time I've seen your vlog I and my sweet💖 used to travel buy coach tours in the 70s so love the patter this was one of the tour and we did it by ferry .no bridge I'm going to watch your runs from now on
Thanks for sharing. Great drone footage. Was there just above Portree in June this year despite the ScotRail strikes which nearly ended our whole trip! Sky, the old man and the Cuillin range was amazing. Such a place and so wild (away from the busy spots).
my nan told me many a story about Skye and I am mesmerised and get this kind of longing in my heart to come see it for myself. The colors are just amazing. its exactly as she described it. Thank you for sharing.
God's Country - Skye is Beautiful, and full of Beautiful people. It's a place that needs respecting. As for the weather, there's plenty to go around. My dear departed Mam's favourite place after her original home in the Yorkshire Dales. Me and our kid will be scattering some of her ashes there in late spring. Great channel, glad found it.
I will never forget that hairpin turn because I DID stall on it a couple of days ago. Mainly because the guy we met coming down didn't give me much room. Also, we are from Canada, still getting used to left side driving and using manual AND I'm 75. Thanks for the drone shots of it so I can show family back home to prove how hard it was. Portree many be a nice sleepy town in the winter but when we drove through it on Sept 1st it was packed with tourists. We were grateful that our accommodation was in Uig. THAT is a nice sleepy town. Keep up the good work!
I love the openess you both show to the true ups & downs of vanlife. Its so refreshing. Keep up the great work, and I'm looking forward to next weekend's video
Just went there today and the gods shined upon us it was cracking weather in fact the entire trip around Scotland thus far as been brilliant. I have watched most of your videos so far and the place has lived up to it’s name. Beautiful scenery, stunning views the people are so friendly.
Yipeeeee, love the opening swim, well done you two. It does refresh ones self, mind, body and soul..... off to watch the rest now, just had to comment on how delighted ye had a good swim. Watched the rest, beautiful scenery, well done on great exploring. Sorry about hiccups, we do learn as we go. Thanks for sharing.
We stayed on a campsite in Skye, opened the door in the morning and stags right outside !! Stunning place, red squirrels, beware of huge logging trucks, narrow roads !!
Great Vlog again from you both. I love rain hitting our van at night but yeah not a fan of strong winds though. We're coming back to Scotland this year for the first time in our current van so cant wait for that. Looking forward to your next vid next week :)
This video gave me soo much excitement for our next trip. Feels like every time you visit Skye is a whole new experience and I cannot wait to get back again. Thank you for bringing us along on this fantastic virtual getaway. 😊 Sorry to hear about the parking ticket… it can be super annoying. Once we had a different experience in the Lakes, the machine charged me outside of paid parking ours, lol. Cannot wait to see the next episode - you guys constantly keeps us craving for more. ❤️
Hey all, I can answer your question about where there is any other place a lovely as what you saw: The Outer Hebrides comes to mind. I see beauty like you filmed right up the road from me. I suspect each area of Scotland has its own particular charms and drop-dead scenery, though, and you need to just accept that the whole country is just flipping gorgeous...
Watching this on a wild and very windy evening here in the NW, so can't imagine what it must have felt like on the Isle of Skye in Ellie!! Some stunning drone footage Campbell and Gemma. As for the parking ticket and finding out you could have parked up for 24 hours...we live and learn sometimes the expensive way though!! Anyway take care and look forward to more of your adventures on Skye.
yeah it was pretty scary at times haha! Managed to hunker down though and it all paid off 😁 yup our lives just seem to be full of expensive and entertaining lessons haha! thanks for the support Susan!
Fantastic video. The Isle of Skye is one of my all time favourite destinations. Sadly the last time we visited, the bridge was about to be completed and it was the old ferry to Kyle of Lochalsh. Nice to hear good Scottish voices. Ar ra best from a long exiled Scot beside a very windy seaside today in West Sussex. Regards Crawford
Brilliant nice to see a uk cupule doing a travel show on RU-vid, having done the same trip in our camper brings back memories only I don’t remember so many restrictions on packing. Keep having fun and enjoy your life to the fullest.
I'll soon be approaching 30 visits to Skye. Evenings at the The Old Inn at Carbost are hard to beat. If I was to recommend one mountain it would be Bruach Na Frithe on the Northern Cuillin, a munro that isn't too difficult to summit.
Thanks for showing us around on the Isle of skye it reminded us of our trip, due to its location the weather changes all the time.just bad luck on the parking ticket though. We had such a good time despite going in winter.take care and safe travels 💚🙋
My wife’s family come from the Isle of Skye. We were married in Portree 27 years ago this July and we come ‘home’ every year. Sadly, due to COVID, we couldn’t return home for our Silver Wedding anniversary in 2020, but we had a grandson born on our anniversary instead. We are disabled campervanners from Fife and love touring Scotland. Enjoyed your video although I would have been tempted to head down to the sheltered side of the island. So many beautiful places to see on Skye. Looking forward to your next video and to catch up on some of your previous videos.
Hopefully you can visit this year instead 😁aw i know we were searching high and low for shelter but the wind was just everywhere on the island! Thanks for the support and happy travels!
Just WOW! Amazing Isle of Skye. A stunning place that is going onto my bucket list of places to visit. Just can’t imagine what it must have been like during the stormy weather but you endured the onslaught. Drone footage was amazing (even though you almost got frostbite to achieve it). Thank you for your hard work to bring us these very entertaining and informative vlogs, looking forward to next weeks 😄👍
@@highlands2hammocks do you really like it ? might seem an odd question but people often say they like things they dont lol. Skye gets me down at times. its very bleak and never stops raining.
Great video guys. We did the nc500 in June going from lindisfarne round to Skye. We are from Cornwall where the parking situation is crazy so we found 95% of our travels very welcoming - often £1 overnight but Skye, yeah all the hotspots are cashing in but still very reasonably I think. We’ll be back soon, love Scotland
icey water invigorating, i swam in the snowy river up in the high country in Australian winter. Left me cold and tired but worth it. lol. Great video guys.
Thank you for such a wonderful experience. We would be living there now if we left when planned. but there's always a reason for delays. Only discovered your site three days ago. Already hooked
Great video guys, being there in February it baffles me as to the train of thought from the councils, as its not vastly populated this time of year ....handing out parking tickets man ...I really don't know how some of these "people " sleep at night . Keep up the good work guys .
I look forward to your weekly videos! A suggestion if I may. Get the part for the casket and maybe have a spare for the Ooops? Stay safe and warm, see ya next weekend! ~from Phx AZ USA~
the photgraphy on the way up to The Old Man is stunning! The cynic in me tells me that the parking rules are deliberately confusing because they all want your money!!
Excellent video guys! Wife and I were in Portree 26 years ago on our honeymoon and appears to have changed a bit. We are caravaners but not sure how caravan friendly Skye is compared to campervans and motor homes though. I do hear Skye a callin’ though 😁
Just love watching your videos, we are from a place called forres morayshire, and are very new to motorhoming. We have tried a few wild camping nights also a few campsites. So enjoying it so far . Keep the videos coming, and if your ever passing through, we have a driveway to park up,with electric and water ,free to to u guys xx
As someone who is from skye and regularly drives buses over to skye in service. The bridge is advised to be closed but you can more than likely can get over it. Just take it slow and you'll get over
Nice vlog guys. We'll sign up for Patreon tomorrow to cover some of your toilet mishaps. Sharons boss used to walk her dogs around Storr and the needle. We'll be there one day. X
Really Enjoyed video and the little bits re parking machine button pushing in Porter, hoping to see in spring 22. That hill you climbed looked challenging but do able for the RV we will be renting as it is about same size. Thankyou
Agree with surly trucker, we were camper vaning in the highlands in October and there is definitely an air of the locals not wanting MotorhomeCampervan there ..we had one guy give the finger sign ,as we passed each other on the road .He was in his car and we in the van ...Such a shame,as tourists are a life line to the highlands...We would think twice, before we return..
It is a shame but it is the tiny majority that seem to think their opinion matters ☺️ everyone we met and spoke with in Scotland loves visitors and the life changing tourism that they have brought
Aah, sconny botland! I heard you. 😉 It certainly is stunning scenery, but I'm not sure when we will get there, just fuel costs alone, let alone food and accommodation means it's probably unlikely so watching your excellent videos may well have to do.
To prevent you losing more toilet screw caps add a fair amount of water in the cassette (after you empty it of course), screw the lid on and give it a good shake making sure you turn it around in all directions and this will flush the cap. Unscrew and empty again and all clean😅😊. Cheers and enjoy.
Your so lucky being able to tour Scotland and the islands. Are you going to do Shetland and her islands. I would love to go there. Did Glasgow, Oban and Edinburgh earlier this year, loved it. But we are restricted by Haggis our Westie. Loved the video. Your not a real driver until you get a parking or speeding ticket. Got both.
we psent 5 days onskye in December, mist everywhere so not much to see, but just enough to say, you need to come back..... and we did the same in portree, stayed for a couple of hours thinking you couldt park..... so thanks for the tip... cheers
Hi guys, love your videos. My partner and I used to have a converted transit which we loved touring Scotland in. We now manage an estate just outside Spean Bridge so had to sell as job is very tying. Come van camp on the beautiful Loch Lochy, we'd love to meet you guys. 4000 acres to choose the perfect spot to van camp.
Hi Emma Campbell great blog I went to isle of sky being disabled I can’t walk I nearly killed my self getting to the waterfall witch goes over the cliffs on to the beach got to the viewing platform,,,,.guess what,,,no water not even a drop ,,lol hehe so watching you two shows me what I missed thank you for that ,great blog, till next time take care keep safe, John 😇😇🥰☔️☔️👏🌟😂😆🥂🍻🌹🥰😇🙏🙏🍫
I was skye last September for two nights. Went around the island on day one and the weather was very poor which was disappointing. Got up the second day to head North and it was so nice I went around again 👍😎
My wife and I love your content. I know you keep talking about a projector. I can send you a mini projector if you'd like. Only used it twice. Too small for my house but would be perfect for your van. Conor and Fionnuala
Hi guys, I'm just back from Skye a few hours ago tonight in my T5 LWB, the weather was wild, snow, sleet rain, and gale-force winds, But Skye is still amazing, and ill be back.
Lovely video and great drone footage ❤️ I live here by Skye and was trying to work out where the run down carpark was in Kyle? Then I realised it was Balmacara Square 🙂 Can you remember where you got the Highland Cow bobble head on your dashboard from? I'd love to find a supplier of them 🙂
We have considered them as they are brilliant, however, we like to be able to keep the window clear in case we want to drive away in a hurry (dramas of parking up wild 😂) so an external cover would obviosuly mean we need to leave the van before we drive.
Amazing drone shot guys & great information will help a lot . Any tips or advise for a visitor preparing to travel to isle of sky in Mid December from India to plan well.
Thank you so much 😊 we actually have a blog post on our website that is a guide to visiting the isle of Skye in winter highlands2hammocks.co.uk/isle-of-skye-in-winter/ hope it helps 😁
I was worried for you when you said you were Skye bound and those storms were forecast. Once again it shows how unwelcome Motorhomes are with the lack of park ups, especially on Skye but hopefully it's changing. I just hope MH users don't ruin it by abusing it. Following your footsteps again next week with a trip to Cairngorm to see the pyramid and the waterfall at Muir of Dinnit.
They have already ruined it by abusing it ☹️ You should try living here , people just come here and do whatever they think fit , they are all under the misapprehension that everyone likes them ! Not the case
