Thanks for that, I left Islington in 1985 but still remembered a lot of those places in the video. You can take the boy out of Holloway, but you cant take Holloway out of the boy.
Thank you, lots of great memories, i used to live in St Peters St and get things for my Mum at Jack and Mary Powell shop, always had a smile on their faces and chatted to a scruffy young lad.
In the 80s I used to go to a Military Shop called Quartmasters that was on Torrens Street near the Angel Tube. They had a Ww2 Jeep outside and A Tank in the Yard beside it...Great times!
That was great! I have only lived here since 1978 but I recognise a lot of the old places in the pics of old! Fantastic! Trams on Upper Street! I wish I had seen that! Wonderful thanks
I lived in Almedia street in the early 60s. I went back on a sentimental journey 2yrs ago and could hardly believe it. It's all gentrified now , we lived in one room and everybody was the same. If you had 2 rooms you were posh. Happy memories though from a time long gone
Ken Harrington so hope you do some more I am born n bred in Islington it's still my home even tho I now live in Crawley once a Londoner ................... !
Hi Ken. I never lived in Islington but I visited quite a bit. Had lots of fun to. I was in my teens then. Nice town. Thanks for the memory's. luv it. from 🇬🇧👍👍 an old cockney gal
There was a pub called the BELINDA CASTLE in CANONBURY ROAD between Essex road and Highbury. It sat on a triangle shape of pavement. This was my grandmothers treat every Sunday dinner time with her Guinness. Pub owner put out cheese biscuits, small gurgins and pickled onions free to customers. Brilliant.
Many a memory in the belinda from 1987 onwards untill it became a yuppy pub and real islington folk pushed out of pubs and area not for the good thats progress so they say
Lived opposite the Belinda Castle it was my dad’s local has well has the Myddelton Arms on the New River Walk. Happy days! Both yuppie pubs now, more like restaurants.
My family n I came from Northampton road Clerkenwell EC1. Known as Islington now went to sir Hugh Middleton school infants then onto juniors then moved to 10 Alwyne villas when I was 7 . So I ended up in canonbury road juniors till eleven back to sir Hugh Middleton school till 15. Always felt at home . Had Flora Robson living in the house facing ours in alwyne villas that road was full of tv stars n film directors as you know Tony Blair lived in Alwyne road when he was a child n grew up to be priminster a few years back probably that’s why it’s gone all yuppie. From there we move into the flats at the back of town hall n school I think it was called William Tyndale my mum only had to cross the road to the off Liscence for my nana Guinness I think that road was called Halton Road the back of the Belinda castle loved the the hole of Islington . Great fun especially sat morning cinema in Essex road .
@@carolegroom5161 My family all grew up around Barnsbury went to Drayton Park and Highbury Grove School lived on the Northampton Estate top of Halton Road right opposite the Belinda Castle. My back window overlooked William Tyndale School. Another actress that lived in Alwyne villas was Noelle Dyson think that was her name she was in Citizen Smith and that comedy with Patrick Cargill. I remember going to the early morning cinema at the old Carlton, in Essex Road, must have been late 60’s early 70’s
@@brianhewson7779 hi our front room window also looked out over the playground of the school aswell our block was called Chadstone house we had a corner 3 bedroom on 3rd floor no 33. The 4 blocks of flats in a square belonged to the Marquise of Northampton. When the owner passed away it was left to his Nephew . In the early 70s we went to Hong Kong for nearly 2 years came back n was given flat between mildmay road n Mathias road my girls went to the school at back of the flats. We then moved to NORTHAMPTON to live up on the eastern estate after 15 years came back this way to Dagenham cause family moved from clerkenwell to here.
I'm a south London boy, worked for Climpsons in St albans passage late fifty's, used the fox pub oppiste parked my mycycle in park st oppiste Edmusum's?? and had lunch in the London dining roomsreal trat of plain and syrup. Unfortuany the old type dining rooms have gone-foreve. Thanks for sharing
From N.Z. Really enjoyed that, " The Days of Wine and Roses" at the Carlton Essex road 1962 which I remember seeing. Number 30 tram ran in Essex road. They took the rails up in 1950/51? and we burned the wooden tarred road blocks on our fire. Thanks very much
Back in the day the Angel pub Liverpool rd was called the Green Dragon, what great nights we had there. My uncle Jim was a green grocer that had a stall in Greenman st. and stored it in the Peabody yard, I'll never forget being 12 or 13 years of age when I worked for him for a bit of pocket money pulling it up the hill on Saturday morning, working on the stall all day then taking it back to the yard. (It was easier on the way back?) 😂.
Did you know dolly from the flower stall ? I thought the two stalls was run by a husband and wife team i remember them well the tibs swimming baths in greenman st the pub on the corner with the stalls outside
@@nasreireinas3392 Yes, I remember her well and her sister Sadly both passed that lived a stones throw from where I still live. Islington born and bred for 70 years and proud.
My Mother, nee Elizabeth Ayton, grew up in Barnsbury terrace and moved out around 1960. Maybe distantly related to Aytons undertakers on the Caledonian Rd. Anyone know of her?
Hi Ken from Ontario Canada. Good to see the folks on "I Grew Up In Islington North London" are taking notice of your great stuff. What's the heads up on your thoughts about a new one? Cheers Harry
Does anyone remember the greasy spoon “caff” that was by Highbury fields in one of the houses. Just along from where the Barclays is. I swear it was in one of the beautiful houses that start just there, but there’s no sign of it.
Hello, it was run by two older ladies. I think it was called the seven steps. Odd as it only had six leading up to it. It was almost opposite the open air pool. Walter Sicket had an art studio at number One about 20 properties to the right of the café. The superior café was around the corner near Caliberia road.
I used to have lunch at the Seven Steps sometimes - in the 70's or 80's [can't remember exactly]. The building is still there, of course, 3 Highbury Place. It has been converted back into a private house (apart from the ground floor window). To be honest, I stopped going there because I began finding the occasional hair in my food.
Hi Brian Hewson , your correct they also lived in alwyne villas her husband was a DJ for the reggae clubs in london . We all seamed to be moved out approximately the same time into the flats the estate was selling the houses. It was only myself moved out my mother still lived there till they moved her into a smaller flat a couple of years later. She didn’t need a 3 bedroom being on her own. Still that was awhile back now.
I was born in kingscross Islington in Beaconsfield building off Gilford St 1960.there had a wed site called the crumbles. Joe brown was in a film made there called Crazy old world .PS has anyone got information on the old building I was born in H block .

Remember probyns well, as i lived in the next st, we used to play football at the back and use the fire exit as a goal, when it shut we managed to get inside and have a look around,
My wife moved to Wales where I live with her parents from here in 1962 when she was 14 - aarrrggg Just think, if they had remained I would never have marred her, and as the old saying goes 'you can take the people out of london, but you can't take the london out of the people - and to this day her TH's still get a bit iffy, and her 'through' still comes out as 'froo'
