ISMAIL HANIJA: "had relatively little to say" What Jihia al-Sinwar means as successor for Israel
Jihia al-Sinwar was named the new leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip after Ismail Haniya was killed. Al-Sinwar, known as the mastermind of the October 7 attack on Israel, takes over the organization's political office. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz called Sinwar an "arch-terrorist" and stressed the need to eliminate him quickly.
Sinwar is at the top of Israel's hit list and is believed to be living in the organization's tunnels in the Gaza Strip. He has not appeared in public since October 7. Haniya, his predecessor, resided in Doha and was killed in Tehran. Iran and Hamas blame Israel and threaten retaliation.
From prison to the Politburo
Sinwar spent more than two decades in Israeli custody and learned to speak fluent Hebrew. In 2011, he was exchanged for an Israeli soldier and in 2017 he was elected head of Hamas' political bureau. The International Criminal Court in The Hague has requested an arrest warrant against Sinwar for crimes against humanity.
The Butcher of Chan Yunis
At the end of the 1980s, Hamas was formed and Sinwar was involved in building up its military wing, the Qassam Brigades. He became known as the "Butcher of Khan Yunis" because of his brutality.
Feared counterattack
The Israeli military is on high alert and expects a retaliatory strike from Iran and its allies, including the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Tehran had announced "severe punishment" for Israel after the attack on Haniya. Israel can count on support from the US and other allies to intercept rockets and drones.
