Isn't that Handi? - Sighting in an H&R Handi-Rifle in 270 Winchester

Initial shots and scope adjustments on a pleasant April afternoon at the range. The first time out with a recently purchased H&R Handi-Rifle chambered in 270 Winchester.
I have other 270 Winchester rifles - one of them is a family heirloom that will someday be handed off to my Son, and another one is the first rifle that I carried hunting with my Father, and the first rifle that I reloaded for. I still have the remaining rounds from that first batch of handloads nearly 40 years later!
This Handi-Rifle was purchased for as an inexpensive range gun to start using a large assortment of commercial and handloaded ammunition that has been acquired over time from friends and family.
Two different loadings were fired in the rifle during this range time, the first of which is covered in this video. Load data (as written) from load notes:
1/7/96
12 Rounds .270 Win.
110 Gr Spire HP
50 Gr. 4895
3100 FPS?
Hornady Book #2

It's hard not to like a break action single shot rifle. I was sad when they stopped producing H&R/NEF. I'm am pleased that now both Henry and CVA offer them in their lineups. I really enjoyed your video.

It’s going to work well to use up a bunch of 270 stuff that I have kicking around. My other rifles chambered in 270 aren’t what I’d consider to be range toys. Thanks for watching, JCM45.

Originally bought mine in the 444 Marlin. This is the time frame around or after Remington sadly took over H&R. Then shortly after bought the rifle I ordered the 270 Win,45-70, 308 Win and the 20 gauge barrels for it. For this gun the 444 Marlin and 45-70 are arm bruisers, cause its such a very light rifle for one. But for this rifle I like the 308 Win the best, then would say 270 Win would be next. I am just sorry I did not also buy the 35 Whelan and also the 460 S&W and or the 500 S&W barrels for this handi-rifle at the time. This is one of my favorite rifles. Then on mine I also went to a local gunsmith and he put on iron sights on all my barrels for me, except for the 20 gauge and 45-70, cause 45-70 was only barrel came with an iron sight on it, when I bought the extra barrels.

I would like the addition of iron sights. This one made it to the range again yesterday - a few shots at 200 yards. Thanks for watching!

I have the same rifle but with the wood stock. I noticed that these can start to creep up and right when the barrel gets warm/hot. I dial mine in cold and leave it be because after the second shot it may start to drift. After a shot group you might let it cool down for a half hour or so and see if it doesn't come back to your original zero. If not, then you might change up your ammo. Good luck.

I haven’t put enough rounds through it to make any conclusions yet. I’m guessing that the challenges with ergonomics and moving the rifle every time it’s broken open has a lot to do with the results I’ve seen. Thanks for the note! 🙂

Look for an early 90's NEF if you are wanting a 1:12 twist (with regular rifling, instead of the microgroove commonly found in 30-30 Handi's) for shooting cast/lightweight bullets best, while still getting the ejector instead of the extractor (ejector better for hunting). So, SO accurate shooting the Federal 125grain loading, and 150grain Nosler Ballistic Tips over IMR 3031. 25-06 sounds interesting in a Handi!

I have quite a bit of 223 ammo. I was planning on building an AR, but the AR platform is so boring to me. I am much more partial to the AKM platform as far as modern firearms. I am however in love with cowboy action type firearms. Found a Handi rifle in 223 at a pawnshop today for $250. It just felt like the right thing to do, even though I knew nothing of the firearms. I have been seeing a lot of positive reviews, which makes me happy. Gonna go pick it up in the morning and I am gonna be a little weird and mount a Romeo msr red dot on it.

You said that the Cabelas scope was a cheap scope it’s actually a very good scope, however even good scopes can be defective, at 50 yards you should be getting close to one hole groups if the rifle likes the ammo, when sighting scopes in usually it can be done in 2 or 3 shots, rather than guess how much to adjust there’s a way to do it in 2 shots search You Tube for scope sight in there is an instructional video showing how it’s done, my handi-rifle gets better than 1” groups at 100 yards, my 308 gets 1” groups, not sure where you heard a rubber washer helps barrel float just the opposite will occur

@WilliamCChapin
@WilliamCChapin 7 месяцев назад
So far, I have only run handloaded ammunition in this rifle. Perhaps there could be a problem with your rifle’s extractor/ejector. I have read that some of the models that feature ejection can be temperamental. The two Handi-Rifle receivers that I own are extract only, so my experience is limited.

At fifty yards I think you should have them all in the red and center tight, with a 270 that’s a 200 yard group , 🤷🏻‍♂️

That would have been a pleasant result the first time out! Most likely a problem with the shooter prevented that level of success! 🙂

Was that not 50 yard target? My rifle does the same. I am getting 6 inch groups at 100 yards with some fliers opening that up to 9 inches. @@tonyjetton8352 I have found break action rifles to be a challenge to shoot consistently from the bench. As far as this one goes, I haven’t put enough rounds or effort into it to draw any conclusions. I’ll be open about it - it’s an inexpensive rifle that I bought to shoot 270 ammo that was loaded by other family members. I’m comfortable with the safety of the ammo, but I don’t expect stellar performance. 🙂

I own an H&R in .270. can't get it to group for shit. Yours is grouping like mine... Terribly. A three inch group at 50 yards is horrible, especially for a cartridge like the .270. Mine sits in the back of my gun safe collecting dust. I have a .357 carbine and a muzzle loader that shoot better groups than that... And that's just wrong.
@WilliamCChapin
@WilliamCChapin 7 месяцев назад
I think what you are experiencing is typical. It’s a basic rifle that has attributes that can hinder performance, and I find this one to be challenging to shoot well. I specifically purchased this one to use up components that I didn’t want to shoot in rifles that are more precious to me. 🙂
