Hi Jim, another fantastic tutorial. The twirl effect was completely unknown to me until today. I directly created an action in Photoshop, which allows me to edit the basic settings of the effect. All other adjustments I do in Luminar, as this is much easier and more effective than in Photoshop. Thank you very much for your commitment that makes sure that we won't get bored in times of Covid19. Best regards and stay healthy, Andreas

Hi Jim - started doing some Twirl Art myself over the weekend and loving it (very addictive!!). One thing I noticed in your video, the second twirl that you add, try changing the blend mode on that layer as well (all the videos I saw people did that). You can also mess with the opacity of each layer to change the look as well as trying different mezzotint's ie long lines etc to get different effect. I've even seen someone, once they have added the radial blur layers, make a copy of the smart object (drag it to the new layer + icon bottom right) and do each twirl on the separate copies and it allows them to have two different mezzotint effects going! I tend to go from Lightroom into PS via edit as smart object then, when I save back into LR, enhance some more with texture, clarity and dehaze, add split tones, vignette etc etc. Really is a cool effect. Not to everyone's taste but a simple, fun skill to learn relatively quickly.

@@JimNix No problem Jim. I'm just dipping my toe in the water with this technique as well, its something new and fun to do whilst we're all stuck at home. There are clearly lots of variables to play with so, as you say, if people want to try it just grab any photo and have a go, see what you can come up with. Some photo's work, some don't but that's the fun of it, you are learning all the time. Take care and stay safe!

I have known this effect for a long time but never put to such an interesting use like you did. However, I can not understand about the smart object part. I have only stand alone Photoshop Elements 2020 which is only one time cost (not a professional to support subscription). So I am not sure what I will be missing if I simply do layer from background and then use that with all the rest of the good stuff. I will not have the blend mode option. So no matter what mode I chose nothing changes. How can I still simulate that Lighten blend mode effect?
@JimNix
@JimNix 4 года назад
Hi Pappu and sorry but I really have no idea bc I have never used Elements and know nothing about it. Perhaps some Google searches will help? The blend mode is a critical piece though as you can see in the video. It may be in Elements somewhere but I am not familiar with the product. Thanks.

This is awesome, Jim. Photoshop has become a big part of my editing process. I have been trying to create some colorful backgrounds to print out to use for some macro photography and this video has given me some great ideas to try and create some. I am thinking that going through the process that you have shown and then going back into Photoshop and applying a gaussian blur may be the ticket. I will let you know if I come up with something promising. I hope things are going as well as can be expected. Thanks for continuing to put out content and keep us all entertained. Take care.

Jim, thank you for creating these very creative tutorials. This one is easy and fun. I only have Photoshop Elements 14 and I could not find how to create a smart object. However, a work-around I discovered seems to substitute well. I created a new layer for the first twirl and then hid the background layer. Then I created another new layer for the second twirl and used the lighten blend mode.
