Isopods are closely related, I think.
@rennleisaber3371
@rennleisaber3371 2 года назад
@@British_Bastard i know this is forever and a half now but yeah, roly pollies are a cute nickname we give to isopods because, at least in my area, they curl up into their little balls. they're very cute and plentiful in my yard! i always love doing gardening or cleaning because there's always a hundred that scatter lol also, they have names like pillbugs and sowbugs, but that apparently refers to the variation of the isopods. the former refers to the roly pollies/isopods that can curl up into a ball (ex. armadillidium species), while the latter are the type of isopod that cannot roll up and have a flatter appearance (ex. porcellio scabers)

This is inspiring. I have salty isopods (I'm a reefer), but my son sparked my interest in terrestrial isopods recently. We're going to practice with some guys from the yard before trying some other species. I can see this becoming a full blown addiction and taking up space in my fish room...

@@pascal590 lots of reef isopods are good guys. Munnid isopods and most sphaeromatids are algae grazers. They're good food for your fish, too. They are ubiquitous and can hitchhike on anything wet you put in your tank. Live rock, algae, frags, even a snail or hermit crab.

Hi! I have a short story to tell you. I became interested in invertebrates a couple of years ago and started by having spiders as pets. One day I found a woodlouse spider and started feeding her with isopods from my garden. I looked for care videos of this spider on RU-vid, but instead found your firsts videos about your isopod collection. Now, few months later I have like ten enclosures of isopods that I have found only in my backyard. I don’t offer the spider my isopods anymore... 😉 I really enjoyed your video, although I had to watch in parts.

Thanks for this great video!!! My kids were so freaked out when I pulled earthworms, baby centipedes & isopods out from under a cut log in our yard yesterday here in the Pacific Northwest. As soon as they saw they were harmless and pretty cute crawling around on my fingers they got much less scared, happy to show them examples of isopods besides the grey ones that live here in Western Washington. 🏞️

Im not sure the species but in a classroom tank with scorpions and local isopods our isopods outweighed the scorpions at some point and decided to start eating the smaller scorpions alive. We found them half hollowed out and couldnt figure out what was happening. Luckily the biggest survived.

@taleandclawrock2606
@taleandclawrock2606 4 года назад
Hey, wasps will leave you alone, just dont disturb them or their nests, slow movements and they will usually fly away. Dont let unecessary fear restrict your life! A bear or wolf maybe reason for hiding indoors,but not a wasp. 💚 You can attract isopods by putting some carrot pieces on damp ground in shady area, with a piece of bark or old pot or such over the top, with some little gaps for entry. Check it after a few days, or a week, scoop up carrots and surrounding soil into a round container with sides at least a few inches depth. Then you can sit in good light, with magnifying glass or zokm camera on smart phone, and check out what little creatures live in your garden. You can scoop out little isopods individually with a spoon to transfer to your preprepared enclosure. Enjoy😍

@@Reptiliatus Maybe one day you could talk about beginner vs intermediate or advanced isopods for people who might get something just because it looks cool but wouldn't know that it's harder to keep. Also, just for fun, if you ever want to expand upon your isopod collection you can explore some of the aquatic species! They're just as neat but of course you have to deal with water maintenance and the fact that you wouldn't be able to utilize them in your terrariums. It would probably be just because they're neat, although I assume they have similar applications in aquarium systems so maybe folks might buy them or be interested in content pertaining to them and their care.

it’s always cool to have that little pop of color in a tropical reptile enclosure, but make sure you have lots and lots of hiding spots and leaf litter so they don’t get eaten immediately :D

In the UK, the common name for the local species of isopods is "Wood Lice" (possibly the US as well?) But they're so commonplace that they've resulted in a plethora of regional common names. In Wiltshire (South-West England) they're called variously "Chucky Pigs" and a host of other names.

Maybe some of the problems that you have with certain species is that you don't have enough of them because maybe they are too expensive a piece or something. Isopods look very social. They hang out together. I'm sure they are happier when they surrounded by a of their congenital cousins, they are the funniest.

Thank you for the suggestion. Definitely something worth considering!

Isopods brains have only 4 components; that being said it doesn’t have room for “social interactions.”Therefore they run over there selves and show no awareness, thus not needing to be interactive. They are not humans, nor are they mammals. Rarely any other animals show IN NEED of interactions, thus making your hypothesis irrelevant.
