Mine was pcb 4 model and was sitting around 32 degrees, just added some kids modelling clay inside the tube. Worked a treat

Nice! I love hearing solutions like this. Simple and effective. Thanks for sharing!

the two I made floated around 31 degrees, I solder balled the bottom battery connection with 1 extra gram of solder and that made it float around 27 degrees.

Nice! A new board will be coming out soon with solder pads on top that do just this! I just build a prototype last week and it went very smoothly. It doesn't take much solder to adjust the degrees in water :) Thanks for watching!

For the off set calibration should the pelting lip not be taken into account? If you lay it flat off an edge so it is not raises would that cause an issue?
@OpenSourceDistilling
@OpenSourceDistilling 4 года назад
You are not the first one to ask this. I did it as seen in the video and everything appears to be working fine. I don't see how doing it your suggested way would cause an issue, flatter should be better. There doesn't seem to be a general consensus on if it's bad or not.

I thought the same thing. Just leaving the lid off for this part of the calibration seems the obvious option.
@OpenSourceDistilling
@OpenSourceDistilling 4 года назад
@@MichaelCoates The lid isn't the problem, there is a lip underneath the lid that's part of the tube. You would need to hang the lid area off the side of the table/countertop. But I think the flatter the better. I think it's a good idea.

Hi there, In my opinion the answer is yes it ought to matter - but it is taken care of thanks to an imperfect centre of gravity so the error is cancelled out along the way. Here goes. So the iSpindel calibration "advice" is to lay the iSpindel flat (incl lip) with the accelerometer uppermost and "flat". Now if you have aligned the accelerometer with the central cylinder axis of the pelting then it will be off horizontal slightly because of the lip we are discussing. So we calibrate to horizontal and call that 90 deg. Now if you were to roll the pelting around 180 you would expect the tilt to still measure 90 deg but because of the lip the error is now doubled. On one occasion I got nearer 92 deg. So based on this so far I'd say it does matter. The accelerometer is not calibrated to the horizontal correctly. But... There'e always a but. When the iSpindel is laying in liquid its going to rotate around and settle with one "side" face up always - every time - because the centre of gravity won't be aligned down the axis of the cylinder. As the SG changes the iSpindel tilt changes but the "error" we built in via our calibration will be consistent (more of an offset than an error) because the iSpindel will always rotate in the liquid until the cylinder axis is heavy side down. You could put a mark of some sort to check - or make a mental note of the PCB orientation each time. So now you're going to calibrate the SG against tilt in a sugar solution or whatever your method is anyway and create a polynomial that will caculate out that offset and all will be well with your iSpindel. If the centre of gravity of the iSpindel down the cylinder axis was perfect and it could settle in any rotation then YES this error would matter and we should be taking the lip into account. But the centre of gravity is not perfect. So we are ok. So long as you are diligent with your tilt to SG calibration method and allow the iSpindel to settle for each reading the error due to the lip will always be in the same orientation and be dealt with via tilt to SG calibration. Andy.

Thanks for all this information. I just bough a bunch of parts to make the iSpindel the only thing that I do not know where to get is the tube. (I live in South Africa soo have no ide where to get the tube soo maybe what kind of tube it is or what I should search for to find someone that sells the tube might be more useful to me).

Interesting that you have experienced the same issue with the 4.0 Version board. I am having the same issue. I'll give your suggestions a try and see how it goes.

Make sure you check out the HomebrewTalk.com link on my blog post. I link to a post where a guy adds weights wrapped in tape. Maybe a combination of the two solutions would work better? Good luck and let me know how it works out.

Check wight of your battery. On good scale. I think it should be 44gr or so (its printed on PCB , I'm not exactly sure).
@OpenSourceDistilling
@OpenSourceDistilling 4 года назад
@DnnyNY, Yes the CherryPhilip 4.0 PCB states 44 grams on it. When I was troubleshooting with CherryPhilip he said, "The iSpindel-pcb work fine with Samsung 30Q battery or with a battery with 48gr weight." My batteries all weigh 48 grams. I suppose with a lighter battery the tilt should be higher in water.

@@OpenSourceDistilling hmm . I never tried to use other battery. I got stash of used laptop 18650, weigh them all and choose 44g only. Build 5 of those and have no problems to calibrate with small washer and double sided tape.
