Israel's Eurovision entry under scrutiny over alleged reference to Hamas | BBC News

Israel said it will pull out of the Eurovision Song Contest if organisers try to censor its entry.
It comes after the lyrics to Eden Golan's October Rain were leaked to the media earlier this week.
According to the Israel Hayom newspaper, the song references the victims of the 7 October Hamas attacks, with lyrics including: "They were all good children, each one of them."
Eurovision organiser The EBU said it was currently assessing the song.
The contest's rules forbid political messages, in a gesture to neutrality.

Eurovision has always been a platform for political performances.: 1978 - Jordan-Israel Controversy: Jordan did not broadcast Israel's entry due to political tensions. The broadcast was cut during the Israeli performance, and Jordan replaced the broadcast with pictures of flowers. 2015 - Armenia's Controversial Depiction: Armenia's entry in 2015, "Don't Deny," featured a controversial portrayal of historical events, including the Armenian Genocide. This led to tensions with Turkey, and there were discussions about the appropriateness of addressing such sensitive topics in a music competition. 2016 - Ukraine's Win with "1944": Ukraine's winning song in 2016, "1944," was about the deportation of Crimean Tatars by the Soviet Union in 1944. The song was seen as a political statement, especially given the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. 2019 - Iceland's Palestinian Flag: During the voting in 2019, Iceland's group Hatari displayed Palestinian flags, sparking controversy. This was seen as a political statement in support of Palestine. They cannot legally ban, so they do it the 'legal way'.🙃🙃🙃

I'm so sorry that happened to your friend. justice will be served❤️ Also, I tell people not to assume what life is like here because you guys don't know a lot of stuff, like for example Israel is the only country to ever try to obey to international law during war. The idf have used warnings, including leaflets, phone calls, and roof-knocking (a practice where a non-explosive device is dropped on a building's roof to warn occupants before a strike), to alert civilians of impending military actions, allowing them time to evacuate. This practice is cited as an effort to reduce civilian casualties and israel is the only country to ever do that. Also, the law itself is a joke because Iran, the country that slaughters women for not wearing Hijab is the head of the council for human rights. The UN is a hypocritical joke beyond repair.

Eh?! No political message allowed? Last year (2023) Switzerland had a song called "Watergun" which was an anti-war song. Isn't that political? Or does it have to be vague enough to qualify? Or does it need to be uncontroversial like being against Russia and for Ukraine? The songs in 2022 and 2023 could be understood as political too, if you use a similar reading as with the Israeli song. (I'm not against the support for Ukraine, it's just about the comparison) For goodness sake: Israel was attacked on Oktober 7th in a terrible terror attack and mourning about the losses is too political? Ukraine's 2022 song was not political at all, it was written way before the 24th February 2022. And by the way, a country under attack should get support but shouldn't be allowed to do everything it wants. Mourning is normal, yes, but actually Ukraine would not get much support if it were responding the way Israel is responding. How do I know it wouldn't? Well, because this double standard is already here: Ukraine is given weapons, Israel is given weapons, but somehow we impose more restrictions on the way Ukraine can use them, even though they have proven they were way softer than Israel and even though their fight is more difficult (Hamas is way less powerful than Russia and if we look at the balance of power for Russia/Ukraine and for Hamas/Israel, Ukraine needs much more support to keep it up). And your point about Watergun is not really valid: Eurovision was made to promote peace and unity so being against war can hardly be seen as going against the standards (even though it is indeed a bit political).

@@topatopa5 We are a pariah state/race/nation/religion since before any of the any current state, race, nation, religion existed as such... We've endured your hate and bias for three thousand years, but still we enriched the world with ideas, compassion, morality, science, art, culture, medicine and technology. We never asked for anything, only that we be treated as equals, criticized when we fail, praised when we succeed, and not singled out for every grievances in the world.. You, and your fellow haters, needed something to hate, but it couldn't be something dangerous, so "let hate Israel/Jews" became easy. Israel will keep it's high morality, and will continue to give to the world more than it ever gave her.

This blatantly political dirge shouldn't be allowed in Eurovision.

Lol homage to their war victims isn’t political, only if you support jihadists and Islamists then it is. For normal people, it’s just a symbol of resistance and hope.

She already made it political when she talked about freeing the hostages and neglecting to talk about the deaths of 30,000+ Palestinians. She did that whilst being interviewed about her Eurovision entry. I don't see how we can allow a state to enter that has a plausible case of genocide to be heard at the worlds highest court. There would be nothing to stop her from making political statements during live interviews during Eurovision. And what do you do then, the damage will already be done. They are probably trying to get disqualified, I'm not sure a crowd booing and protesting against the genocide would be good PR for Israel.

Love how sympathizers ignore the big picture long term benefits of this war for the Palestinian people. It’s almost assured they will have a functioning govt for the first time ever when this concludes.

Britain has invaded quite a lot of countries so we aren't perfect but I think this whole situation started with the Arab invasion of Judea in 638 AD.
