The problem with the 3800 year history is that it is pretending like there were no Jewish converts to other religions. So while the Semitic Jews may have a 3800 year history with the city, so have the Semitic descendants of the Jews that regarded either Christianity or Islam as the continuation of their forefather's religion. There is no reason to lay a historical religious claim, as all abrahamic religions have it. People should rather look at the status quo, accept it and move on in figuring out how to improve it for everybody rather get entangled in senseless debates over legitimacy.

The state Israel exists, it has taken over some more territories as the spoils of wars waged against it and that is the status quo which everyone involved has to accept to reach any position from which things can move forward to a peaceful future in that region.
