Indiana Southern Railroad takes a loaded coal train from the Bear Run Mine to Duke Energy's new coal gasification plant at Edwardsport, IN. Video begins at Linton on the INRD RR then we stop at Bee Hunter where the train takes the connection track to ISRR rails. Next we catch it on the hill between Sandborn & Westphalia and finally watch as the train comes into Edwardsport where the crew ties it down. Duke has a switcher that takes cuts of the train into the plant for unloading.

Is this rebuilt line still used? Just curious with the downturn in coal. Thanks for a great video.

Yes, it is still in use. Not sure on the train frequency but I think it has been stable through the years. They also ship out tanker loads of by products. Oh and yes, Briben is a complete idiot! ;)

Do they still operate trains on this line

How many loads does the plant receive and what first class does the ISRR link with NS or CSX?
@Grainexpress
@Grainexpress 8 лет назад
+M Williams Not sure how many train loads per week they receive. ISRR connects with INRD at Beehunter and they take it to Bear Run to load which is on INRD rails. So no class one sees this train. Not a very far run to load & come back.

Thanks for the info! I love to here stories like that..

CSX does go to the same mine via INRD and I saw a NS coal train out there parked on the Edwardsport lead once but it was during flooding so it could have been diverted because of flooding. ISRR only interchanges with CSX at the northern end in Indy and the southern end in Evansville, and NS in Oakland City.

This particular train never touched class 1 rails, but ISRR has connections to both CSX and NS in other places.

It looks like the speed limit on this branch is mega slow.

Expect that when the line was built by a snake with an engineering degree.

from Indy to Switz City at least, the limit is 10. that area sees two or three trains a month at max though. I believe the rest of their trackage varies from 10 to 15, possibly getting up to a blistering 20 in some areas. as mentioned it is an extremely curvy railroad

Consolidated RailFan with all the flat land im surprised they didn't straighten the line out.
@ConsolidatedRailFan
@ConsolidatedRailFan 7 лет назад
The problem is the land is usually owned by farmers down there so it's cheaper to stick with what they have rather than pay a load of farmers to straighten it out
@mikebrabant4170

It probably had to to do with the land ownership to a lot of different farmers in the area so it was easier to follow the old right of way! IMO

If the must use coal, then why not source it close by then electrify the railroad line with electricity from the power plant like Black Mesa and Lake Powell do?

I'm glad to see the jobs that will be created for the community. I try to buy American made as I live in the states. What some people don't realize is that burning coal is making lots of people very sick. Southwest Indiana has the highest concentration of super polluter power plants in the country. 4 of the 22 worst polluting coal plants are located within 30 miles of Evansville, Indiana. The people living in south-west Indiana get the pollution while the power is sent to the rest of Indiana and other states. We should be grateful to those living in the southwest part of Indiana because they have to live with the cancer, asthma, etc...

your saying that Cancer and Asthma will disappear with coal gone??

You might want to a education before you comment. All power plants from Indy to Evansville have or the process of converting to Natural Gas with the exception of Hoosier Energy plants. The Edwardsport is Gasification power plant and one of the most advance clean air plants. They capture the sulphur from the coal, then it is loaded on to tank cars for other uses.

Coal sucks. Go with nuclear, gas, hydro, geothermal, wind, and solar.
@chessiesystemrailfanman3741
@chessiesystemrailfanman3741 7 лет назад
+Gammareign; No coal is king! Go with nuclear, really? Then what do you do with all of the radioactive waste?? Natural gas, hydro and geothermal I agree are good alternatives but with wind, the wind does not always blow and solar is good only when the sun shines. I would combine coal, natural gas, hydro and geothermal energy.

I can't imagine coal coming back because the increased competition from other fuel sources, which is good.. that is how businesses are forced to innovate because of competition. I am hoping that it keeps the Indiana Southern rolling.
