The city of culture, the city where continents meet. Official video of Istanbul 2010; European Capital of Culture.
Istanbul (Turkish: İstanbul, historically also known as Byzantium and Constantinople) is the largest city in Turkey and fifth largest city proper in the world with a population of 12.6 million. Istanbul is also a megacity, as well as the cultural and financial centre of Turkey. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbour known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents.
In its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330 - 395), the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395 - 1204 and 1261 - 1453), the Latin Empire (1204 - 1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453 - 1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010.
Istanbul welcomes you...

I just came back from Istanbul. Celebrate my new year's eve there. Such a wonderful place to go. Words can't describe how much I love this place. I will definitely come to Istanbul again. Definitely! The Turkish people are really friendly and warm, they make strangers feel like home and when its time for you to leave, you'll feel hard to say good bye. I love Istanbul!!!! Love from Malaysia!

I spent my childhood in beautiful Istanbul. I lived in different parts of the U.S and travelled extensively. I live just outside of Mahattan, NYC for 20yrs yet the tolerance in Istanbul 20 years ago was no lesser than the tolerance we have today in the U.S. In fact, as you travel down South, Southwest, and Midwest and/or into suburban towns, the tolerance becomes invisible. For God sake, people get beaten to death in the U.S, I remember transvestites walked in Istanbul comfortably.

İstanbul'a gelme fırsatı olmayanların kesinlikle görmesini öneriyorum.

My beautiful, beloved Istanbul. When my parents left there in 1957, the population had just surpassed 1.2 million! What is almost always lost in any discussion of Istanbul these days is the old traditional manners and etiquette for which our city was once renowned as well as our progressive liberal views and mindset. We were freed, not by Ataturk, but by the Tanzimat and Sultans Mahmut II, Abdulmecid and Abdulaziz.

@erhannnnn I was thinking the exactly same thing. Istanbul has so many cultures living in it, so many beautiful buildings and a beautiful history.. Even when this video gives me goosebumps, it isn't a good video to represent the beauty of Istanbul.

@CanKuman8 Bro, I live in Australia and I am from Istanbul but I can't wait for the time I'll return to my home country, Turkey. Australia is a great coutry too. No traffic, no noise, life is easier but I really miss the energy of Istanbul. We used to go to Kadikoy in the middle of the night and have some cold sandwitches or Uskudar for some great tea and cekirdek while staring at maiden's tower or go to Istiklal for some fun. here all the shops close at 5.30pm. Enjoy Istanbul while you can!

they built a lot of nice buildings that's it. they didn't try to do new things, buildings, theatres, museum(as in france). they've stopped after ottoman time. if this city will be capital of culture they should care history, art etc... more and more. I was in there for 5 years. spent time awesome. hello from poland

The city was originally founded as a Greek colony under the name of Byzantium in the 7th century BC. It took on the name of Konstantinoupolis ("city of Constantine", Constantinople) after its re-foundation under Roman emperor Constantine I, who designated it as his new Roman capital. The modern Turkish name İstanbul derives from the Greek phrase eis tin polin (εις την πόλιν), meaning "in the City" or "to the City".

@MelisYiik well sure it is..Instanbul was the capital of the Byzantine (Greek) Empire and well..most of the ancient buildings you see are in fact Greek. e.g. the monument in the begging is tha Agia Sofia Church..the Ottomas after they conquered the city gave it their touch as well, that's why it's such a multicultural & beautiful city.

@Marinemauro I am sorry but that's wrong. There are many Byzantine buildings as well as past civilizations buildings in Istanbul. That's what makes Istanbul so beautiful and multi cultural. However, the buildings you will see are overwhelmingly Ottoman buildings. Ottoman culture was very sophisticated, that is the reason you are confused I guess. For example, famous Yalis, there are 700 of them but only 3 of them is greek but their look is similar to European architecture.

To tag1989 : bro Istanbul is a modern city they don't have those weird rules like you cant drink or cant hold a girl hand. Plus they have crazy clubs and bars and to get in to some of those clubs you need to dress really good . One of their famous club is. Reina. U can write on youtube to search some videos 'reina istanbul'

Westerners are such hypocrites - they nominated Istanbul as the European Capital of Culture in 2010 but are constantly rejecting Turkey's membership in the EU. In fact, Asia Minor was a cradle of European civilisation, the Germanic medieval architecture is a humble copy of the Byzantine art. Finally, Europe is not a monolithic and monocultural place but a mix of different ethnicities and cultural influences. I would definitely love to see Turkey as part of EU. Would love to retire in Turkey:)

Yeah Istanbul has so many foods, people doesn't sleep at 10 pm. All the bars, clubs and restaurants are opened until midnight minimum. You can find open markets on saturday and sunday. This city is alive 24/7. And more importantly we are not boring and dusty robots like most of the Europeans. Istanbul is not culturally in Europe, that's true.
