It’s a Good Thing We’ve Been SINGING the WRONG Lyrics to this 70s Hit ALL ALONG! | Professor of Rock

Coming up next, interviews with Eric Burdon and Harold Brown of the 70s group Eric Burdon and War... on their hit debut single Spill the Wine. It was one of the biggest songs of 1970. It was also one of the strangest. So many urban legends behind this one. Spill the Wine is rumored to have been inspired by the band members knocking over a bottle of wine on the studio console. The song was hard to interpret. It had Spanish in it, spoken word, and singing only in the chorus, and the lyrics have been sung incorrectly by listeners for years. And it’s probably a good thing because the actual lyrics are pretty risqué. In fact, Spill the Wine was rumored to have been about drugs… but it might actually be the only hit song of the rock era about an orgy. This is a family channel so I’ll be careful here, but the interview with the lead singer and the drummer is coming up next on Professor or Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series Revelations where artists go deep on their greatest songs and albums... Today we have interviews with two of the principals of the rock-funk soul band WAR. Actually, it started out as Eric Burdon and War. After having a bunch of hits with The Animals including the #1 smash House of the Rising Sun and other classics such as We Gotta Get out Of This Place and it’s my life Burdon… Before Burdon joined War the band was known as Nite Shift and was the backup band for Deacon Jones, the former Football Player who was trying to get into music. The group was renamed WAR WHEN Eric joined and played with them for 2 albums. Eric toured around California with War before they went in to record their debut album.
When the band did Spill the Wine, they felt it would be a big hit. It went to #3 and was one of the biggest hits of 1970 but as you will find out next the song has some history. It was a spoken word song by Eric and then he sings the chorus. In the song, you can hear a lady speaking Spanish in the background. This girl was Eric Burdon's girlfriend. Our other guest today Drummer Harold Brown said that when they were recording they had put up a little tent, candlelight, and some wine and that Eric and his girlfriend were in the tent and Eric was doing things to her and making her talk.” then there’s the chorus… It’s been misheard and sung incorrectly of years. People have sung Spill the Wine that the girl repeatedly but the proper lyrics are "Spill the wine, take that girl, spill the wine, take that pearl." The "Pearl" is a reference, to a woman’s clitoris. So all this time we’ve been singing… Well, you get the point. Also many have pointed to the spoken word lyrics where Eric talks about a dream where he is at the top of a mountain naked with many different women around him. Many think it’s a reference to an orgy. Radio programmers had no clue about this. Let’s see what Eric and Harold have to say about his truly strange song.

I knew the lyric was “take that pearl”. I could hear it. But I thought the reference was Shakespearian. From “Hamlet”, where the pearl is dropped into the goblet to either detect poison or nullify it. It didn’t save Hamlet’s mom (nor his stepdad/uncle). I thought the message was “Don’t be distracted by the wine, it’s poison, don’t drink it. Spill it out and take the pearl. Go for what’s valuable. Life is short.” That sort of thing…

There's a radio edit of "Spill the Wine" which omits the second verse (and chorus); but back in the day when it was a hit, Casey Kasem (on AT40) would always play the full length version, since that's how it was actually released as a single. "Spill the Wine" was also the third song played on the inaugural broadcast of AT40.

Amazing. I've been hearing this song for over 50 years, and always heard, "spill the wine, dig that girl". I bet even today most of my old buddies still sing it that way. Of course in 1970 a teenage kid had no access to most song lyrics. There was no internet, nobody circulated lyrics, and if any magazine printed them, nobody read it. And if you didn't own the album, you probably only heard the song on your car radio without headphones.

I remember when Eric Burdon was with War. At first I was disappointed but after I heard that music the disappointment disappeared. I saw them in concert in Spokane and it was a great experience. I never could figure out what that song meant. I thought maybe it was “do I dig that girl?” That didn’t make a whole lot of sense but I ran with it. Even now this 71 year old white boy *(me)* thinks he can dance when I listen to “Slippin’ into Darkness “ or “All Day Music“ or just about any of their songs. I love that music. They do their own thing. They copy no one.

In the early 90’s, I worked my first restaurant job in Palm Springs, a vegetarian place. I waited on a guy who came in a couple times a week. Parked his Harley on the sidewalk, same order every time. Quiet guy, didn’t say much, always cleaned his plate and tipped well. Almost a year later, my coworker was talking about how Eric Burdon was a regular, and how he always sat at my table. I was kinda stunned, bc I had no clue. I still remember his very particular order after all these years, lol!!

This great song was covered by Michael Hutchence for the 1996 soundtrack of Barb Wire, (Pam Anderson). Although the original recording is well recognized as a classic, the 1996 version with the incomparable Michael Hutchence is in some ways even better! Twenty five years of ever improving recording technology makes this version SLAM. I played this at many parties and it was always a “hit.” I believe that had this version been included on a more popular movie soundtrack, it would be universally revered, but sadly it kind of got lost in a forgettable movie. I would encourage anyone who loves this song to check out this remake. Just make sure you crank it up!

I REALLY miss how life was in the 70s/80s/and even most of the 90s. For the most part we were MLKs dream. EVERYONE pretty much got along regardless of what color you were. Then a paradigm shift happened and everything went down the crapper. That's why a lot of us old cats still get along so well while the youth are completely divided (by nefarious design). Old music is a great unifier for those of us that lived back then! I've been asked by people why, as an older white dude, why I listen to Old Skool, and some stuff into the 2000s, rap.
