Today we learn about Monty the lurcher We learn what is a lurcher dog And how Monty came to live with us Lurcher 101 why they are a great pet and a few reasons they may not be for you Dog vlog
You are just the kindest man in the world, and my heart nearly burst when you said this video is to give Monty the attention he deserves on the channel. You know your dogs so well as individuals. You are deeply empathic, adapting to each being -- and that is your superpower. 🤗
So nice to be educated on what a lurcher is. Monty looks like a very nice, smart dog. I had no idea they could sprint 46mph. That is really impressive. Thank you for sharing this piece of your life, as always.
Oh yes they can, my friend had one and was giving me a lift home and told me to look in the wing mirror and there was Finnegan chasing the car. Him and I had a special bond. He was fantastic with the kids my friends boy and my son were 5 and her daughter was 3 and he was so gentle. He was crossed with a deerhound so was grey and shaggy and gorgeous ❤ he was a total couch potato after he'd had his half hour sprint 3 times a day.
I'm in the US and the first time I heard of a lurcher was in the movie "Snatch". Great to actually know what one is. Monty seems just wonderful, he clearly adores you.
We just lost our dog, who looked very much like Monty, not the coloring, but in head and body shape, flippy ears, long legs, and deep chest. She was 17 years old, and a rescue, so very possibly a lurcher…some of the personality traits seem similar too. She loved to lick the glass door! She also could jump straight up to look over a 6 ft. Fence (or in our windows) And yes, she shed alot. She was such a great dog, she is very much missed!
Now that I know what a lurcher is, I guess my Sandy boy was a lurcher. We also got him at a rescue, though we don’t know what he was mixed with, possibly greyhound and yellow lab? He was the sweetest boy, very well behaved and decently trainable. But he did have a weakness for small fas critters. He actually ran down and caught a low-flying mallard right out of the air, caught a mouse running through the house once (THAT was sheer chaos!) and almost got booted out of obedience class for being unable to resist a small squeaky Pomeranian fluff ball that ran past him during an exercise. Luckily, he also had a very soft mouth and gentle personality so all the above mentioned animals were unhurt and brought to me and dropped on command.
Laughed until I cried at the story of Sandy the Lurcher catching the small, fast moving fluff ball. One of our Borders catches chipmunks, but they do not survive.
I didn't know that's what she was called, but I had a lurcher. I just said "sighthound/lab mix." She actually ended up having a congenital disorder and left us early, but we made sure she went in comfort. I ended up calling her Shadow because she was such a velcro dog, I lost her in my shadow a few times when she was a puppy. She did lick a lot of random things and was very chill around just about everything. The exception is if I seemed dissatisfied or angry at a person, then she'd growl at them and back me up. Very protective, but not violent. For prey drive, she did have a thing for fast moving small critters and was vicious with them. Gave me more corpse gifts than any cat I've ever had. Thanks for the possums and rats, Shadow. Something interesting is that she didn't really listen super well to verbal commands, but her response to visual cues was unparalleled. She could be across a field, I'd call her name to get her attention. She'd look back at me for direction, and I'd squat down with my arms out, like "come back to momma." She would tear back across the field at warp speed and then, very gently turn and settle herself in my arms between my knees.
Monty is the best! I think I might be a Monty. I blend in with my surroundings and move fast when I need to and I don't mind chilling on the couch (also my hair falls out sometimes) 😁
Loved it! Thank you for dedicating an episode to Monty. He's such a handsome dog. The footage of him and the little BCs is just adorable. 💕🐾 What a sad story about his previous owner. How lucky Monty was to find a new home with you and Stacey! Sending 🫶 from 🇩🇪 to 🏴
I've been wondering about Monty so that was really interesting. I like that you gave the pros and cons about owning a lurcher. And he has the sweetest face.
Awww Monty is such a sweet boy… he adores you Sean!!! He sure lucked out with you and Stacy!!! ❤ I have a Monty too, he’s also a rescue, and runs like a border collie, but has long legs and a Schnauzer head!!! I call him Spider-Man!!!
Your video is so INFORMATIVE! I've been in rescue for nearly 30 years. Every rescue/rescuer should strive to be this informative. The number of returned dogs and dogs given up initially would go down.
Never knew lurcher was a sight hound crossed with non sight hound - I thought a lurcher was a polite way of saying Mongrel. My parents lived overseas and we used to have mongrels - nice kind dogs. Monty was so gentle with the puppies - lovely dog.
Haha me too! I always thought a lurcher was a tubby sort of greyhound and not a cross. And I'm a dog person. I just never thought to ask. I'm totally confused about anything "doodle" too. I just fuss them and share in their owners' enthusiasm. I don't ask those questions about people so I feel it's perhaps wrong to ask about dogs too. :)
@@neilj8224 A 'doodle' dog is a cross with a poodle. So a Labradoodle is a Lab/Poodle cross, my neighbour has a Sprollie which is a cross between a Spaniel and a Collie - back in the day we just called them mongrels!
@@flower-ss2jt lots of working line BCs throw a spaniel in again every few generations if the herding drive gets too neurotic. Not sure how common a practice this is in Scotland but it certainly was very common in NW England. You end up with more liver and white ones, often with some dapple, on their legs when they are close to this having been done. We had one of these and he "grew weird" as a pup. He was all torso for a couple of months until his legs sprouted and caught up. For a few weeks we suspected he might be some sort of corgi and the rescue had been told some fibs.
@@neilj8224 Never knew that about throwing in a spaniel if the herding drive got neurotic. My daughter has a labrador and he is huge, his head is higher than the dining room table and he weighs 6 st. Never seen a Lab that size - for Christmas will give her a DNA kit to find out what dog it really is. But living with livestock this huge dog has to be well trained. Hope your long legged Corgi is fine!
So glad you told us about Monty. Always seeing him in the videos and wanting to know him better. thank you so much for spending this time on sharing about him. So sweet and special because he attracted you and Stacy in his life.
I adore lurches I have three whippets and they are the most prolific killers of rabbits, rats and only other vermin but among my hens and young lambs or any animals they never look at them, it’s all in the way they are brought up
Awe, he looks like a sweetheart. You can tell he totally loves you. Thank you and God Bless you for rescuing a pup instead of just going to purchase. So many great dogs end up being put down because ppl would rather get a dog with papers. Even tho, so many mutts are smarter.
Loved the way he snuggled next to you in the beginning. Never knew they were so fast or that they were a mixed breed. So lovely to get more knowledge about this great dog. He's a gentle guy, so sweet. Thank you for giving him some limelight too
Ahhh! I’m so happy Monty found his forever home with you guys.he looks very happy. Had no idea of that breed living here in Texas. He’s simply gorgeous and I know will do well with your upcoming extended family member. Thank you for sharing.
You've described the breed perfectly! I've had everything from chihuahuas to pugs to Australian shepherds. Now I have a Silken Windhound, and she's the best doggo ever. She was a rescue, and the only thing bad that I can say about her, is that she turns shedding into an Olympic sport. She doesn't move around very much, but somehow her hair gets into every nook and cranny of the house!
Greetings from Washington DC. I'm new to your channel but I love it. Dogs are amazing creatures and your videos prove just how lucky we are as humans to have them in our lives.
This is great information! Thank you! It’s good to know the qualities and characteristics these dogs have for future reference since I work with dogs. Thanks Sean!
The way you describe everything makes it feel like I’m right next to you visiting Scotland! I just love it, thank you for sharing such beautiful stories
All interesting information! I read a lot of books set in the UK and lurchers in many of the books but I never knew exactly what they were. My previous dog became mine at 6 1/2 after his first person died suddenly. Like Monty, he was returned ... I adopted and flew Bear from the eastern US to my home in NW US. I didn't realize until maybe a year after Bear was with me that he did not feel comfortable with the transition. Only a bit of hindsight and observance of behavior gave me a bit of a clue. Rescue is tricky! I am fortunate that I work from home and am able to both give lots of attention, walks, play as well as observe. And videos like this are so helpful: hearing other's experiences. Thank you!
Monty is a Love! 3 years ago a lurcher (and humans!) moved in next door. She's a sweetheart and I'm now sold on lurchers. She's a long-haired lurcher - rather stylish.
As always, you are an inspiration to all dog lovers. I live in a condominium (apartment) in Toronto and am not allowed (with for reason) to have a dog so I lavish my attention and love on my son's dog. Thanks for simply being a good person and great animal owner.
Aw - what a lovely dog, Monty is - such a shame he never had the chance to say goodbye to his previous keeper, that must have been very hard on him as he's such a sensitive soul - but he was blessed to find you as you understand him and he now has an amazing life. His personality sounds very similar to our late Border, (a rescue, too) who was white & gold with blue eyes - quite retiring, not as forward as a tri-colour or black & tan - never sought conflict. It is very comforting to hear about your dogs and their story - they are part of the family, aren't they.
He seems like the sweetest dog. I am familiar with what a Lurcher is, but I wanted to get to know Monty, so thank you for giving him some time in the spotlight! :) I have only had herding breeds (current is a GSD/BC mix), but from what I've been learning about sight hounds, they really are great dogs...that is, if you can keep up with them - lol.
Monty has intelligent eyes. My aunt had many lurchers, she lived way out in the countryside and they loved it there. I knew they were quick but that speed is amazing. Cheers for the video!
I watched some Ferreting and ratting videos with Lurchers, they go from standing still to mach 1 in about 5 steps, absolutely amazing ! Monty's a cool pup
Thank you for sharing your knowledge about the dogs you have with your family. Dogs are amazing and yours are so smart and beautiful. Can tell you spend alot of time with them
I LOVE lurchers my friend got a lurcher puppy when our boys were 5 and Finnegan was the most gentle dog despite his size. One day my friend was giving me a lift home and told me to look in the wing mirror and there was Finnegan chasing the car, him and I had a special bond ❤ I loved that dog. They're great.
Thank you for great, informative videos. You are so knowledgeable never heard of a lurcher here in the US. Monty looks part greyhound. Kisse to Monty and the rest of you furlegged crew
I was born and raised in Scotland and came to Canada when I was 22, we had a BC, Smartest dog ever, (I'm biased) but I never heard of a "Lurcher" until I started watching the TV series, "The Dog House" and I've seen so many lurchers on there, surprisingly really when you see how smart and beautiful the breed is, Monty is a testimony to that 💜
I have a Jack Russell and I can certainly see some Lurcher in her! And she is also a licker of blankets and just about everything else. Monty is a sweet soul…thanks for introducing him!
Thanks so much for educating us. Monty is adorable and lovable. His affection for you shows us you are a good person (but we already know that and Stacy too) ❤
So glad to have found your channel ! Your knowledge , compassion & obvious love for your dogs is wonderful !🤩 Thank you for all amazing this info . 🐾🐾🐾
He’s absolutely darling. I’ve had three greyhounds (all rescues, one an ex-racer, one from a cruelty case and one that was born in rescue from an ex-racer) and they really are very easy, gentle, elegant and well-mannered dogs. Long live Monty!! Thank you for rescuing him when he must have been so confused where his beloved person was. The licking thing (so I’ve been told) is a displacement behavior to help them calm themselves. Thank you for pointing out sighthounds can’t be offlead outside an enclosed area because when they go, there’s no way you’ll catch them. They’re out of earshot faster than you can even holler a recall or try to get their attention to chase YOU as you run the opposite way.
Monty as well as the rest of your pack absolutely love their dad and hold you in a steam as leader of the pack. I usually watch your videos and verbalize outloud awe or how sweet when the dogs are in the picture just doing their thing. Truly, it is majestic ❤❤❤
My dogs have always licked the couch. All herding breeds.First 2 German Shepherds. Now Icelandic Sheepdog. I wondered if it was the fire retardant usually in the fabric of the couches here in US. (?). We call mixed breeds “mutts” here. Glad to know the proper definition of a lurcher. Monty is a great dog!
Love the Monty spotlight! He's such a sweetheart ❤. And here I was thinking Echo was fast! 🤯 I've never even heard of a lurcher before. You learn something new everyday 😁
Loved seeing "The Full Monty!" I have a retired (& sadly, quite elderly) racing greyhound. Monty has that "greyhound face," a little fuller, but those sweet eyes are all grey. That "burst of energy"/"take a long nap" is so totally greyhound. Greys are generally sweet dogs (mine had some issues but is now a sweetie). Tho' only briefly interested in dogs & new people, she LOVED cats & was terribly disappointed that my cat hated her & bullied her every chance he got. But if he was outside & started running, she was after him like a shot. Never caught him & wouldn't, I think, have hurt him if she had. The greatest thing about greyhounds is their quirky, clownish character---Monty showed that when he started to roll over for a belly rub (greyhound tranquilizer) & the funny ears that are up-&-back in any combination. My greyhound does lick fabric, but I think I know why---bad teeth run in their genetics & the licking is somehow a response to tooth pain. The fabric just happens to be convenient, I guess. Did Mony only start this in his later years, & does he have terrible bad breath? Then it may be his teeth. Anyway, he seems very happy with you guys & was adorable with the adorable border collie pups. Thanks for sharing him with us!
I have a greyhound and he loves licking things :) Carpets, sofa, his soft toys! It's cute, I think it relaxes him although he gets into a bit of a trance with it sometimes and you have to break him out of it 😅 Love Monty, I have a soft spot for all sighthounds and lurchers.
All my labs have been obsessed with something - Black Lab licked faces, Chocolate LOVED to lick feet or toes ( little annoying when people came over in the summer), Yellow likes soft fabrics like flannel and velvet. Doesn’t matter how much exercise he gets the yellow settles at night by licking his blanket 😅. And hair! But it’s way worth it, and it mainly falls to the floor doesn’t float around like the cats.
Traditionally a lurcher would be a sight hound-scent hound cross where the hunter wanted the speed and visual acuity of the sight hound with the nose and “go to groundedness” of a scent hound, particularly terriers. How big a dog depended on the needs but most are a whippet- mid sized terrier cross. Sometimes you will get one who’s happy to go for miles, I’ve a friend who uses one on the bigger side for skijoring. The owner is on cross country skis and the dog is in a harness.
The brightness from the window behind you is obscuring all the visuals. I love Monty's ears. They have that "Santas little helper" look from the Simpsons.
I love Monty he's so beautiful! We used to have a dog that was part German Shepherd and something else (not sure what) but she was a bit shorter than a Shepherd and stockier. She used to walk into the pond at our house, stick her head under the water and root around for big creek rock! She would stay under the water for a crazy amount of time! Then she would come out with a big flat rock usually and she would cry the whole time and carry the rock to the bank and put it down. It was so crazy!!!!!!!!! I have never heard of a dog doing that before. Do you know why they do it? Monty is so awesome.
Love seeing Monty and hearing his story. Excellent information and editing as always. ❤ My mystery mutt from a feral dog rescue out of Guam loves to lick fabrics and I didn't even know other dogs do that too!! My furniture and bedding has to be cleaned constantly but he doesn't damage it at all....?
