As a retired Special Education teacher of 3-5 year olds, I can assure you that the staff is well equipped to take care of his needs. It will take him time to acclimate, but it is the best thing for him at this point. It is your option to ask for a full time aide for him, that should not be an issue. Please know when you have your IEP meeting…. It is a LEGAL document and it must be honored by the school system. You should be able to tape the meeting ….

I taught the same program. While I agree with most of what you said, in the districts I was in parents could not just ask for a dedicated aide and receive one. It was based on the student’s needs and the number of students in the class.

Thank you for being a teacher. ❤️ I have a kiddo on the spectrum/nonverbal and he is now back in public school after a couple years. We are so lucky to be in the district we are. His special education teacher is phenomenal. There are far more good ones out there. ❤️

Stephanie... MAKE SURE they have LIVE FEED cameras that u have FULL ACCESS to ANYTIME you want. Trust me... its much easier tht way. A GREAT facility will provide that... a mediocre one will not. I'VE owned a daycare.... LIVE FEED is so IMPORTANT!! ❤

I know he loves his chewy but I am amazed that it doesn’t cause a gag reflex. He puts so much of it in his mouth. We all have our little pleasures that wouldn’t appeal to others. School will be a challenge but he will learn min his way. Love your care and love for little man.

@lynnparrish1335 Hi Lynn, you're a longtime follower like me!❤ absolutely agree with you! My nephew has Treacher Collins syndrome and I advocate for inclusion at his school, and he's 13 now and there's no child in his grade who sees him differently. He's an A student!!! My Mason is my joy, he lives with me, since he was 9. 💙

It’s normal to be nervous, anxious and sad when your baby goes to school. This school sounds geared to ensure Sebastian’s success. Our daughter is a special needs teacher. These teachers have a blessed and joyous calling to work with these kids. It’s going to take time to work into a nice routine that you and Sebastian will be comfortable with. Breathe! It will be great!

As a retired kindergarten teacher, who also holds a nursing degree, can I suggest that you take some time to write a 'handbook' of notes which explain all your concerns so that the staff are able to use it when they run into issues. It might be useful to alphabetize the issues that may come up. It is so difficult to get this started - I so understand and take it as slowly as you need to, but please trust the staff, they have so much experience I am sure. All the best for this new adventure xxx

This will be a tremendous opportunity for Sebastian! He will grow so much! I had to take a leap of a faith with my son. He started in special day classes at age 3. The day the bus came He was so short I couldn't see him in the window! I waved bye bye and the rest was history! He went to it like duck to water. He made friendships that he has kept to this day. He is now 32 years old. I have been through 17 IEPs. It is amazing to see the growth when it is time each year! I am super excited for Sebastian to have this opportunity!😄👍👍♥️♥️🐶🐶🐶♥️

Hola!

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. It must be difficult because you have been his main caregiver since birth. It’s nice to give this opportunity to Sebastian. The new stimulation will be good for him. You and Gio will adapt to this new experience. Things will go well some days and other days not so well. Just like he is with you, Steph! Trust in others is the hardest to overcome but as the year moves along, it will be easier to let go! Prayers always to your loving family❤️🤍💙🌻😍

Even though he is special needs you are feeling normal feelings. God bless ❤

I am also a retired special ed teacher. Your IEP should be represented by the entire team that will take care of Sebastian. The program manager or director should be in charge of having everyone attend. Sebastian’s goals should be written up and agreed on by you both for services. An LVN most likely will be in board for all medical assistance(I.e. g-tube). therapists including speech and physical as well. Adaptive PE may also be. Included. By the conclusion of the IEP you should have a plan for Sebastian that is a legal documentation. Also included should be an emergency plan for him in case of seizures, etc. As parents, you also have the right to call an addendum meeting if you need to do any changes for his program. To feel at ease you should come to observe his class and modify his needs if needed.

Stephanie, get a file cabinet because you will have tons of EIP paperwork. I am sure you are very familiar with this. My son also had EIP's, so keep those papers. Believe it or not, you will need all those documents for when Sabastian is no longer in school. Here in Indiana I needed those papers for further programs. School will be good for him and you. I would think a nurse is always there, and once you know he will be fine, it will ease your mind. The first time with schools is always a worry and crying point for mom's, but even if Sabastion attends a few days, I think it will be good for him.

I taught medically complex children. Words of advice. NEVER let anyone feed Sebastian until you train them how to do so. I would absolutely go and sit in on the first few days or weeks to help teach everyone how to handle him and how to be very careful with his stiff joints. I totally get your anxiety. Leaving your precious boy with total strangers is so scary. You take such excellent care of him. I'm also worried about him getting sick. I would start him out in small amounts of time. He's so attached to you and Gio and he is such a smart boy. Hopefully all will go well. LOL how cute is he poking his chewy into his mouth. Oh forgot, sometimes OT therapists can be pushy with oral feedings and wanting to give liquids by mouth. You guys are such excellent parents, it's excellent that they are going to let you both come and be with Sebastian when at school!

I wanted to reach through the screen and hug you. When my oldest child started his first day of kindergarten, I volunteered to drive the carpool that day so I could fully experience the day. As soon as I got home, my husband called from work and said, “ Were there any tears?” I laughed and replied, “Only mine.” I watched my little guy march right up the steps at the drop off and head for his teacher whom he had met already. He turned around and happily waved goodbye to me. I’m tearing up right now remembering this. Your investment, devotion, and completely unwavering love of this little guy have gotten him where he is today. You’re entitled to some sadness and apprehension. You always put his needs first and you’re continuing to do that now as he enters this new season of life. God bless your sweet heart. This will be good for both of you!

You have th cutest little dude ever. It makes me mad that people post negative comments. You and Geo are such loving, caring and good parents. You make sure he has levering he wants and needs, expose him to new things and make sure he has fun. I could watch him all day. I totally understand how you feel about sending Sebastian to school. We had to send my autistic 3 year old grandson.it was so hard taking that little boy to the bus and watch him crawl up in his seat. He did learn so much and the teacher he had did that job because they truly love the special needs kids and loved the kids. I always thought the should put a couple of cameras in the classroom so parents could sign in and watch him. I think you'll get comfortable with it and you'll see him learn new things. But was hard because he had been with me day and night. My grandson didn't do well if I sat in the classroom because he just focused on me and wanted to go home. They are really good about designing a plan that will work for all 3 of you. You are the perfect parents for Sebastian and Sebastian is the perfect child for you guys. My son who has the autistic son said he wouldn't change anything about him. We all think he's just the way he is suppose to be and that's perfect. Special needs have so much love to give. You 3 are very lucky. 💜💜💜

I'm so excited for Sebastian. He will love school once he gets used to it. I strongly advise you to visit his classroom often, Steph. Teacher's are used to being observed, so they won't mind you popping in. Also I believe he is entitled to having a private aide to be with him all day at school. That would stop all falling through the cracks, if you know what I mean. I imagine the teachers would like an aide for him as well, as it would ease up their workload. Now you will get to see just how smart your boy is. I think he is very smart!! Can't wait to see.

The amount of time Sebastian spends at school will probably be determined by how much progress he makes. It’s going to be difficult for a while, but you’re going to be great, Mom! My daughter took dance class when she was about three, and she cried s o pitifully, I was going to cry. The teacher told me to duck out of sight, and sure enough, she settled down and loved it. I can totally understand where you guys are coming from as a parent and regarding the school. I worked in many multiple disabled classrooms. I was in a regular public school, in a multiple disabled classroom and I was assigned a girl in a wheelchair, who was non verbal, and also had seizures. She did not require a nurse at the time, but we are trained and there are protocols in place. All of the paraprofessionals change diapers, the girl I was with was in high school so I took her to the nurse and I assisted if she needed assistance changing her diaper. Now, as a parent, when my babies went to school, I had those anxieties also, I think for you and Gio, have the regular separation anxieties which is normal but then you also have all of the other issues, like the feeding tube, diapers, seizures, etc. My son had an IEP until 12th grade. They will set goals and document everything. So the point of my post is these schools are equipped and prepared. If you want him to have a nurse or para one on one for Sebastian ......tell them that! Also, I'd say definitely go there and watch. That's a great idea. I did that with my one son. I was able to observe without him knowing I was there and I learned a lot and was relieved. My heart goes out to you guys, but school will be wonderful for Sebastian and you. Even if it's for a few hours a week. Maybe start off slowly. See how everything goes. Everything will work out. It will be a nice routine to get into.

There is a lot of anxiety when you send your child off to school and I know it’s even higher when your child has special needs. I do want to reassure you coming from a special education background that these caregivers have a heart for this. You can work it into his IEP that he has a one on one and that person will be by his side the entire time he will never be left alone. This is what I did when I worked in special education and now my oldest daughter is doing the same thing. His one on one may not know how to do everything that Sebastian needs, but they will learn to take care of all of his needs. I know from personal experience that you form a bond with your student and sometimes become part of their family and attend their special events and sometimes babysit when the parents need someone. I’m excited that Sebastian is going to go to school once he gets used to being on a different schedule and around different people he will love it.

However, never feel like you cannot do "pop-ins" those are welcome at any time by public schools as well. The school should transparent in open door policy! Im excited for him. It’s scary for the parents sometimes even more than the child, although over stimulation is a real thing. I’ll be praying for sweet Sebastian and you and Gio. 🙏🙏💯

You made a giant leap! Just remember that the teachers, therapists, administrators, that you met today all have devoted their lives to improving the lives of children and their parents. Thirty five years later, I am still so happy with what my path turned out to be.

You and Gio are incredible parents. It was so nice to see Gio talk about his school and the little boy - he is a great dad and Sebastian adores you both. I will be praying that all goes well. Your little guy has been through so much, I really want him to have a good school experience. Love from Canada ❤️🇨🇦🙏

So excited for you all...School! The next big adventure for Sebastian! As this new routine gets started, I'm sure Sebastian will catch on very quickly. You and Gio are wonderful parents! This will be very emotional for the two of you, your first born going to school and there will be tears but this too shall pass. Just take a deep breath and enjoy every moment of Sebastian growing up, which happens all too fast! Thanks for sharing and God bless!

Drink some water, a lot, to help with your headache. You know Sebastian can have an instructional assistant who is assigned to him. That person will get to know S. really well. Lots of times that person can be withfor years. I just retired from teaching last year. I taught 45 years, mostly first grade. Children look out for each other and love their classmates.

He seemed so happy talking with his mama. I worked for 40 years…I admire you and Gio’s parenting style. It is so overwhelming for families. It was my joy and pleasure. Don’t forget…you need rest and relaxation too. School will be great for Sebastian too. He now has the opportunity to generalize what you have taught him with others. You will meet great people and share and watch other children grow. I bet Sebastian and his school community will surprise you for the good. You are wonderfully positive. Sebastian is teaching us all so much.

It’s so exciting to see Sebastian going to school! I totally get it though being nervous and anxious. Sebastian is precious cargo and he needs a lot of attention and no one gives attention like us parents. I’m praying for you all and I’m praying that Sebastian absolutely loves it and just flourishes with all he will learn! 🙏🏼💙

I've been waiting for this update. I can imagine this is really anxiety inducing for you and overwhelming for Sebastian. That's completely normal. I would feel the same. I'm so glad they are accommodating for you and Gio as parents. It's such a big step letting your your child, who has extra needs, go with people you don't know. But it sounds like Sebastian will make some friends, and of course, the extra therapy will be good for him, and he will have his first little bit of independence. You'll have some time to go to the gym. It's a completely different picture to what you were facing this time last year when Sebastian was very poorly and his heart surgery was being planned. School for a little boy who twelve months ago was so poorly is a major achievement. Well done tou you all. Much love from the 🇬🇧 ❤👨‍👩‍👧🐕🦜❤️

I am not just here for Sebastian. I adore that little boy but I am here for you and Gio. My son is 28 and autistic. He had very low support needs as I raised him, no physical disabilities. But watching and listening to your day brought back so many memories and anxiety. My son was in an inclusion class in school and on an IEP. The circumstances were different but the emotions were the same. If I can share anything with you from my experience 16:26 and the two of you are already doing the most important thing which is being an advocate! Love to you all on this new journey❤

I know I asked this in a previous video, but haven't been able to find the video. My question is on the feeding tube attached to the canuala, is there a need for it to stay attached all the time? I realize that it's needed for primary feelings & meds. I do have a history as a CNA in nursing home care & home health a was wondering.

Based on your assessment of the day, maybe start him for one hour a day for 2-3 days. Then add 30 minutes the next week for 2-3 days and add 30 min the next week. Ease in. You will know how much is too much too soon. Easier to go SLOW and not overwhelm you all out and then have a big setback that will be much harder to overcome. Maybe he will never do more than 2-3 days in a week. That’s ok. What is the hurry? He has a long time to adjust and have school experiences. Take your time. You will all feel better in the long run. Wishing you the best. ❤

Mix emotions but get that she knows when he is in pain or etc . But at the same time I wonder if she is not pushing it a little bit or should . I have a feeling he might do good with a speaking device or some kind of communication board .

Oh momma and daddy bear , the first day of school is always full of various emotions, you both will get through just fine. If you need to “ watch” do it from afar, that way you can witness his first few days of school without interfering with the process. All special needs kiddos are amazing! I retired after 32 yrs, so I kinda have an idea on your worries and excitement. God bless!

I can't imagine how difficult this change will be for you and Gio but especially for you Stephanie as his primary caregiver. It is hard to hand over your child to another to care for, but we need to let them spread their wings and I have a feeling Sebastian will do amazing!! 🤩Enjoy sushi dinner and enjoy your time with family tomorrow!!❤

It’s never easy when your baby moves on to a new adventure in their life, even more so when your child has special needs! I hope that in some aspect that you find comfort in knowing that Sebastian isn’t alone and neither are you guys. It’s cool how Blake was so interested in Sebastian (and Gio lol), and that Sebastian was interested in what was going on around him. I think you and Gio should do what you feel comfortable doing, whether it’s having him go to school a couple times a week for a couple of hours, or having him go all five days for a couple of hours. I have a feeling as the school year goes on, you’ll start to feel more and more comfortable on how long and often he goes for. There are so many resources out there that can help all of you. It’d probably be cool to meet other parents who have special needs children, who have an understanding of what you guys go through on day to day basis. I’m 37 and have had five back surgeries, with a sixth one coming in a couple of years, and I have neuropathy/burning in my legs, so I’m pretty much in pain 24/7. Several years ago, one of my pain management doctors suggested I go to a program at Wash U (in St. Louis) called STEPP. It’s a Supportive Training and something I can’t remember for People in Pain. It was awesome! I was the youngest one when I was there in my mid/late 20’s, but these people knew what I was going through. It’s hard for my friends and some family members to know what it’s like to have that much pain since they haven’t been through it. Anyway, thanks for sharing this journey you guys are on right now. I’ll say some extra prayers for you guys and that you find comfort in what your decisions may be. I truly believe that Sebastian will do awesome in school, it’ll just take some getting used to.

I'm so excited about this!! Hopefully, it'll only take a couple of weeks to get into the swing of things, then you'll be old hands at it!! I think all of you are going to benefit from Sebastian's new situation. His meeting new kids, teachers therapists, etc. New experiences and surroundings. I know you feel very overwhelmed...all 3 of you, but to a great extent, it'll go away, for you. You guys are in my prayers! Hope you enjoyed sushi night. Love you!

How exciting for Sebastian to be starting school! I know it is stressful, but I think Sebastian will do great. I used to work with special needs children in our local school system. I was a personal assistant to the same young lady for 10 years. I was with her the entire day at school. She was in a wheelchair. The staff I worked with were very accommodating to her needs and to all of the special needs students. I think it’s excellent that Sebastian can go on a part time basis. Sending you all my love and hugs, I love you guys. God bless you all in Jesus’s Name 🤗🙏❤️

Hi Stephanie, great seeing all of you. My heart goes out to you. It is an emotional experience anytime a child starts school for you it’s extra emotional. What you are going through is normal, that’s your baby. It is very important you get the answers to all the questions you have. The questions you have are vital to Sebastian’s well being and his safety. As a long time Special Education Teacher I always made sure the IEPS told more than just goals. I made sure that the IEP document contained all necessary information so that anyone who came in contact with that child knew all they needed to know to provide the best educational, emotional, and health services to that child. My advice to you is to make sure all of Sebastian’s health needs are on that report. Make sure all necessary modifications are listed on that report. Make sure all medications are listed. All will be fine. Sebastian will love school. You guys got this. I wish you the best of luck. If you have any questions reach out. Enjoy sushi Friday. AnnaMaria
