It’s OK to mess up! (even on a tidal river 😬)

Many boaters avoid the far flung stretches of the inland waterways - for fear of coming undone on tidal rivers. I have the greatest respect for the river and after 6 years boating I still get caught out - but we all make mistakes and rarely are they life threatening. Having said that stay safe out there if you are planning on taking a trip like this and always speak with an expert (the lock keeper) before heading out onto the water as every tide and every boat is different!

Special thanks to Jim the lock keeper for making me and others feel better about their mistakes!
And thanks to local boater Greg for helping film all my amazing pool shots

Hi Robbie, we are moored at Ripon and do the Ouse and Trent every year. If you come this way again (or any of your viewers), you go through the left hand side of both the rail and road bridge when heading downstream to Selby. Going upstream to Naburn, it's the right hand side of both bridges 😉 As you stay on the right hand side heading towards Selby lock, slow right down and turn to starboard so you end up on the lock side of the river rather than the opposite side of the river. Hope that makes sense 😊 Fabulous watching it. The ebb tide can really carry you quicker than you realise by the time you reach Selby so the advice given by others in keeping the power on just to get safely through the bridges is spot on 👍
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 2 года назад
So basically the opposite of what I did - be good if they told you all this before you set off/via VHF as you approach 🤦‍♂️ And good job I’m not making a ‘how to’ video!!

I am impressed with your ghostly ship mate yanking the bumper out of the water and up on the boat as you went under the bridge. This portion reminds me of the river at Laughlin, NV. No locks, but a launch ramp, rocks and fast current.

@SailingYachtSaltyLass 2 года назад
Hi Robbie - You got it in and the boat survived so that makes it a GREAT arrival. 😄 I have never helmed a narrowboat but I have plenty of experience at sea. My suggestion to you would be to time your arrival at the lock near when the tide changes. That way, the speed of water past the lock will make your entrance a lot easier. At sea we aim for around 30 minutes either side of the turn of the tide for a lock entrance.

Great to see my home town from the mucky old Ouse. You'd see some fair sized coasters coming up to the Olympia Cake Mills, it took considerable skill to squeeze them through the toll bridge against the current - it was quite a common occurrence for one of them to knock the bridge out of action for a while, much to the annoyance of drivers using the A19. Fifty years ago the river was alive with barge traffic, the shipyard was just downstream from the lock and ships were launched sideways into the river - an impressive sight. There's also a tidal wave called the Aegir whne tides are right -it's no mean feat taking a narrowboat down there.

Great Vlog Robbie, we have done that stretch a few times and can be hairy coming into the Selby lock, would not say you crashed, it is best way to get in the lock, get the bow on the wall then just power it round, but when you were coming towards the bridge could hear you take the power off and I am shouting at the screen "Don't slow down Robbie' give it some wellie" amazed at that flying fender too. Glad you did that trip to York, we loved Non Monkton, had some great times on that beach. Never made it to Ripon sadly as locks were not operational but it was in late 70's, we had 40' Springer NB back then with 40hp BMC. Happy days. And we did Trent Falls on that trip. Looking forward to your next TV series.

Ha ha, good effort at the lock Robbie. In the flying world we call that 'crabbing', where your track (the direction you're travelling) is markedly different from your heading (the direction you're facing) so you end up 'crabbing' towards your destination. Dunno about boating but when flying you keep that crab going to the last second and then kick it straight. I've not done many rivers and you've just reminded me why 😁

Hi Robbie, I've sailed yachts in some rough seas but I still had me heart in my mouth as your barreled down past those bridges. A small mistake there, engine failure or turbulence, could have seen your heavy steel box smashed and capsized. Additionally, you were on your own! I think you did pretty darn good given the tricky circumstances.

Well done Robbie - I really can't see where you "messed up" or "crashed"! If you had hit the lock mouth wall at 90 degrees you'd have suddenly stopped dead and could have damaged something, but it looks like it was a gentle meeting with the wall and the river current pulled you right off and into the lock. I get it wrong just getting round right angle turns on the Grand Union - the only thing really to avoid is hitting a wall or concrete piling at right angles - i.e. head on! Oh and running those bridges reminded me of the rather exciting videos on NGUYEN CHE LINH's channel from (?) China!! I think you did well - I've never done that route and don't really do tidal rivers but I'd give you a 9.5 !! :)

Watching this again today, after 4 boats came down the Ouse from Neburn, the flow of the river was much faster, one, a 23ft narrow boat with an outboard found it very difficult to run the tide but all 4 managed to get in the lock in two pennings, there was a few very loud 'knocks' when a couple entered the lock but no damage done. You did a pretty good job, it is not an easy lock to get into, I seen many go far more wrong and have to make a few attempts , at least you didn't have a bull and 2 cows floating in the water to contend with 🤣

We came up the river on a barge, on a flood tide, and did the old bargees trick of going through the railway bridge backwards, to give us some steerage. When the river is running faster than the boat, you're effectively in reverse, and you know how much steerage you've got then!

The River Nene at Peterborough when flowing fast actually gets waves due to the area being so flat the wind produces the waves. We lived on it for 4 years near the Dog & Doublet tidal lock. 70’ trad no bow thruster. I disagree Mark the flow is always greatest along the outside bends but I get what you’re trying to say
@markphillips2076
@markphillips2076 2 года назад
@@RobbieCumming on bends yes, but on a straight stretch like that you get different flow speeds in the centre and the edges. That's what causes the eddies as the river flows. It also means if your boat is across the flow, the front of the boat can move differently than the rear. It's something you get used to if you deal with tidal flows regularly.
