This song came out while I was in high school in 1980. It reached number 1 on the BillBoard Hot 100 chart that summer. I can remember driving (by myself) for the first time and blasting the radio in my mom's 1976 Olds Regency 98 (land yacht). I had the windows down and this song blaring! There was something about it that I liked right away. Billy Joel wrote it as commentary on "new music." Wikipedia says "The song conveys Joel's criticisms of the music industry and press, commenting on new musical styles of the time such as new wave being mere rehashes of older musical styles. It also addresses changing trends and attitudes of the era." There are also many references in the song to places close to where he grew up on Long Island, NY.
Gordon set up his Yamaha electric drum kit but had a couple of issues. No pedal for a kick drum and his electric snare was not working. While I though he played great (as usual) the drums would have sounded better if he had a full set to work with. Frank knocked it out of the park with vocals while we were missing John on lead guitar. He was out of town. I am playing my sweet 1994 Gibson Hummingbird.
We hope you enjoy our cover of this great song by Billy Joel.
