As a Beatles fan of many years, you can go a long time without thinking about what happened to John. Then you are reminded and it really cuts like a knife. To have given the world so much and to be denied all those years, there are no words
For a moment I thought I had foolishly purged my copy of 801 Live but, pausing your video, I ran down to the cave and there it was in all its glory. Also, I love Yoko's work in music and art. Thanks, Mazzy, for another great It's the Music Stupid.
Great stuff, Mazzy! LOVE the Woodentops... ("Wooden Foot Cops On the Highway" is the one I love... but that's great, too) ... and love the fact that you're so open to so many types of music... and you wave out the stereotypes and plow through with an appreciation of Yoko Ono as an artist. Also... hearing you talk about "The Third Man" reminds me of hearing Mark Ulriksen raving about that film. So, so good. Cheers!
Catching up on a small backlog of your vids…Certainly hit some buttons for me: 801 Live. My all time favourite live album… it was actually my entry into Eno’s solo work… to this day his first 4 albums form the core of my ‘what to save from the fire’ lps… (granted I’ll need a big case). In the UK the first pressings suffered from being stamped just off centre… Mine was one and it gave the music a bit of a woozy effect. Woodentops. Yes Morrissey endorsed ‘em… but cruelly renamed them the Suddenflops, when they failed to really break through. Another top movie, Mazzy. Have sewers ever looked so cool! Great movie based on a great book. Walking On Thin Ice is also my favourite Yoko Ono track… but I need to listen to the 12 inch… and the album… my god the bravery of that artwork. Thanks Mazzy…. Love the vids and that they trigger musical associated memories, not only for yourself, but also for me and no doubt your many followers.
A neighbor of mine couple years ago was getting rid of his records and they were all basically mint condition or at least mint minus but anyway he gave me about 20 command records and a few of the project incredible sounding music even if it's not your genre the reproduction was incredible
Thanks for this, the price of vinyl is difficult for everyone to attain it all the time. I dislike it when a dealer or collector put someone down for not buying a first pressing. It is the music foremost.
I just got done reading a book about Bob Gruen, the rock & roll photographer. He was a good friend of John & Yoko, and he talked about the cover photo of Season of Glass. He set up the photo with the lights and everything, and had Yoko actually snap the photo. In the book there's a photo taken by Bob of Yoko taking that shot. Yoko is not my cup of tea, but I respect her as an artist and a person.
Hi Mazzy, great to see the Woodentops. I think that is the first time I’ve seen them shown on the VC. Trying to describe how they sound in comparison to others was always going to be a tough ask as they are one of those bands that didn’t really sound anything like their contemporaries. They are still play a handful of gigs each year (UK and Japan…yes they were big in Japan) so fingers crossed I’ll get so see them sometime soon (in the UK, although Japan would be great.)
I was curious so I listened to Free Design "Kites are Fun" on Spotify and noticed they did a cover of "A Man and a Woman" from the film soundtrack of the same name. Even after 55 years This is still my favorite soundtrack of all time. If you do not have a copy of the album I recommend you get one to add to your collection. Has that mid sixties flavor and sound that is undeniable.
Thank you for spotlighting Yoko's "Season Of Glass" album. Very well spoken and reviews of each song. I played that album constantly back when it first came out. 🙏
Though I'm sure you know this, but just in case...Carol Reed, the director of The Third Man, made two sister films... The Fallen Idol (1948) and Odd Man Out (1947)... all three films are considered classics of British cinema that I highly recommend.
Fun Fact: Enoch Light's "Project 3" label got that name from being the third of the three record labels that he started--Grand Award, Command and then Project 3.
801 Live is fantastic!! Nice to see someone talk about it! Im a music collector, not a pressing collector like SO many these days in the VC. Im a music fan. 🎶☮️🎶
If you get a chance to hear Marquis Hill, a C hicago jazz trumpeter, make sure to go He is appearing in Seattle tonight. He did a concert last night in Spokane that was amazing!!! Highly recommended.
Who you calling stupid ? LOL . I have a few of the Command Records of Enoch Light and yes great sound. Once again a lot if music I have not heard and to explore cheers Mazzy !! -VK
Just wondered if someone could let me know if Walking on thin ice, either the original 7inch vinyl or 12 inch extended 1981 version is on Spotify as last I looked I couldn’t find it. It’s an amazing g track and I’d like to share it via playlists
Too-long notes while watching: --Enoch Light was an engineer born in 1905, so he was an audio pioneer in several ways. No doubt he was involved with tape as soon as it appeared in the late 40s, stereo recording/playback development in the mid 50s, and same for quad late 60s/early 70s. His list of quad releases is probably the largest of any artist, though it's painfully ironic that the format disappeared around the time of his passing in 1978. --For me the recordings sound excellent, but if I'm not paying attention to that fact, the music itself could drift me to sleep. Earliest Warner Bros stereo LPs are same. They can blow away your production/audiophile ears, but the music brings on the zzz'z. (One exception is the Spike Jones WB stereo LP from 1959 though!) --That 801 Live is an amazing spin! IIRC, it was on Polydor in Canada (not sure what in USA, probably same) --"Walking On Thin Ice" also was released as a 7" single (edited...?) with the same cover design. To me, Yoko's singing voice is nice if/when she uses it. Without proper exposure to the right tracks of her's though, I've avoided otherwise. --The old time radio shows of Third Man was interesting to hear. When I first started restoring recordings, someone wanted a CD of their Ruth Welcome LP (but I think it was on Capitol). Am I wrong thinking the zither is of Greek origin...? Interesting instrument!
I had no idea Enoch Light was an actual person. Just assumed it was an umbrella name that produced all those albums. See, you learn something new everyday… if you’re open to it.
Wow Mazzy, this was one of my favorite videos from you. I’m a longtime Yoko fan also and appreciate her art and solo albums. 801 Live is great album, also check out Phil Manzanera Diamond Head, excellent album. Nice ending to your video with one of my all time fave movies Third Man..✌️
Great video. The Third Man is a personal top 5 movie for me. You might like Joscho Stephan's version of theme song ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7bkncp-DYfQ.html
