Will..not trolling you here mate,.those discs are not the correct size and that's pretty dangerous dude!. They probably match the pads you were originally supplied and are wrong. Please check em mate.. ask Neil to watch the bit of the vid where you fit the new pads and he will confirm.. meanwhile, don't do too many miles.

@@WGTNmarineLife I don't know mate, I'm all for the self builds really. I mean, after all the struggles and mistakes along the way his van is looking great. It's a learning process and if people didn't "DIY" on projects like this they'd be priced out of it. But anyway, I do agree that when you're doing stuff like brakes and electrics, the mistakes are often very dangerous, so, personally I'd recommend he has that stuff checked by someone qualified after he's done. That's all it needs 👍. The discs need swapped out for the larger, probably 300mm and hit with some brake cleaner, and the bolts should be torqued up - job done. I mean well when I say these things too! So many people critique and take the P*SS in the comments, but hardly anyone actually helps.

NEVER use a torque wrench for removing lug nuts. There are long1/2" square drive bars for this but preferably a proper cross lug nut wrench or tire iron. I am surprised you did not damage the Torque wrench. Also never put your head into the wheel well unless the vehicle is supported with an axel stand. Not everyone has access to a lift ....Ron Cumpsty.

I feel your pain Will. I have always done my own brakes and discs and know how difficult it can be when the bolts have been overtightened previously. Last time I did it I couldn't even get the wheel off because one of the wheel nuts had been so overtightened by the last owner. I had to take it to a tyre centre who used a scaffold pole on it and promptly snapped the wheel nut and I ended up having to get it drilled out. Nightmare! Well done for persevering.

A note on torque wrenches; let’s say you want 100Mn, and a nut is already tightened to 150Nm… the torque wrench will click (or beep if digital). You tightened your wheel nuts with an impact THEN used a torque. There’s a great chance you have overtightened them AGAIN. Loosen them off and use your (now broken hahaha) torque wrench to tighten them properly.

I learned to change my discs and pads myself. It really does save a fortune. I change them pretty much every year (Eurocarparts have GREAT January sales!). When you do it regularly, it becomes much easier, not only because you're used to it, but the parts don't get so welded together that it's such a ballache. These are the kind of skills that I feel we've lost in a couple of generations. Everyone should learn to do this. It isn't difficult, it just takes a bit of time and patience.

The things you learn here at home the hard way will save you a lot of time and money when you are on the road. I was lucky to have a grandad who was a mechanic / driver in the army.. The next thing you might be needing is a ruddy great sail on the roof the way petrol prices are going. Either that or Fred Flintstone holes to put your legs through in front of the drivers seat.

The classic stuck bolt turns every small job into a proper project. Extra bonus if you snap them. Extremely frustrating. Have had my fair share of these with my old Minis and VW bugs. To unstuck: WD40, impact wrench, long lever arm or heating. Each method works differently on friction, which is the source of your problem. A mix of these usually does the trick without breaking anything.

The best way I found to get those calliper bolts out as well as using a breaker bar, is to sneak up on them like the mechanic did. Look away pretend you're not there and boom slam it up :) At least you have another vehicle to go out to get additional tools, nothing better than being half way through and needing the car to go out in lol! Also did you use break cleaner on the disks to remove all the oil on them for transport to prevent them going rusty?

I know you probably won’t see this but well done! It’s not an easy job and u stuck with it! I will say I was lucky in having a dad that taught me how to do all this kind of stuff. We even built a car together. I probably swore as much as you when I first did them. My knuckles were in shreds knocking them on every part of the wheel arch I could 😂😂 . But I was the happiest wasting a sandwich with oil covered fingers while dad and i worked on cars. A bit of advice as soon as u take the new ones off of anything check they are the same as u wasted time changing the new disc pads. And the proper tools are needed a good breaker bar is worth its weight in gold lol
@DeanVRS20VT
@DeanVRS20VT 2 года назад
If you plan to do more Will, invest in tools. Even the Halfords Advanced 200+ set would’ve helped here massively. That Ryobi impact builds up power, so the longer you hold the button the more torque it will produce to unloose bolts/nuts.

Well done Will! Your perseverence is admirable. My mechanic described something to me called 'farmer strength', where even the slimmest, wiriest guys (or gals) are really strong through technique and experience. I think that's what the old boy demonstrated. Don't be disheartened though, you learnt a shedload through that experience.

Hey, I know I'm late for the party, but I'm just watching this playlist now. I really feel your pain, you're like me: "others can do it, I can also do it", but it just keeps going wrong. In my RV I'm going to take out the radio for the third time sometime soon, because I wanted to go the easy way with the backup cam and used a Chinese wireless system, which is, well, not that good. Anyway, when the mechanic took of that bolt, like ot was nothing, after you've f*cked with for two days, I totally felt you, man. Still, I hope you don't get upset, but all this didn't stop me from having a great laugh at your expense. Love your videos, man, love the Vehicle Camping seasons too. Keep up, mate!

Will as a mechanic I know your frustration. Tight bolts and nuts really sucks. Heat is your friend when this happens. I’m really sorry to say this to you, please take them apart again and remove the lock tight from the brake hardware. You thought that was tough wait till you do it next go around. Few other tips. Clean all parts before putting them in. Rub the pads together to remove their sharp edges. Your a brake grease on the sliding pins. Use a anti seize on the other mounting bolts. Love your vids keep them coming

Yep, I did this once. Took me about 4 hours - had trouble with the calipers. Ever since (15 years-ish), I pay a mechanic. Saving money is nice - letting the experts do things far easier and likely better than I can... priceless (or rather, value for money). Of course your way you end up being much more knowledgable about your vehicle, and much less likely to get ripped off, so I can appreciate that. Good job. :)

Cracking stuff Will. No pun intended. I'd say neill's wet himself with laughter on the other end of the phone. 10/10 for perseverance Will. FYI the "law of the lever" comes into play in physics when we use a longer bar to undo bolts. You can use penatration fluid to loosen thing up also followed by shocking the bolts with a few slaps of the persuader - (Hammer). The wheel nuts must of been put on with an air gun before? All ways hand tighten where possible. Great videos as all ways Will. 👌 ❤️
