Also sung as "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," It Came Upon a Midnight Clear is a Christmas hymn with origins rooted in 19th-century America. The lyrics were penned by Edmund Hamilton Sears, a Unitarian minister, in 1849. Sears wrote the poem as a reflection on the social and political turmoil of his time, particularly inspired by the European Revolutions of 1848 and the ongoing slavery debates in the United States. The poem originally had five stanzas and was titled "Peace on Earth." In 1850, the poem was set to music by Richard Storrs Willis, a composer and music critic, who named the tune "Carol." Over time, the hymn evolved to become the familiar "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" that is cherished today, conveying a message of hope and peace during the Christmas season. The hymn has endured through the years, resonating with listeners as a timeless expression of the desire for tranquility and goodwill in a troubled world.
