I recently attended the Fall 2021 Import Alliance show in Atlanta GA with my youngest son. Given the choice of vehicles to drive in my fleet, my son choose his 2005 Honda Civic. I think that was an awesome decision, and this video explains why.
In my view, it doesn’t matter what you’re driving as long as you love it. What do you think?
Thanks for watching!

It's not as much about what a person drives, it's more the feeling of accomplishment and pride that the vehicle owner feels because they repaired and modified their own car. I rebuilt the engine, trans and repainted my own car in my garage and the car feels very special to me.

I have just completed a vehicle proect in my driveway getting a 2001 Subaru Outback running. After not having a car for over 8 years due to my tough budget getting a car back on the roads is awesome. But after doing all the work, replacing all the suspension, all the bushes, rebuilding the engine not once, twice but 5 times to get it running right my Suby is very special to me. I don't care that its a 20 year old car...it runs, takes me to places I haven't been before and more important brings me back home. Does it look new, no...but again it runs.

When my daughter graduated from HS my ex wife and I each contributed 1/3 and my daughter added her 1/3 and she bought a used 2004 Honda Civic. It lasted through her undergraduate career and then 4 years of medical school. She sold it to my neighbor, who still drives it. Nothing fancy, but reliable as the day is long.

Still got the 2003 Corolla my mother bought brand new, it's 19 years old now, fully paid for and drives perfect, should be able to get another 19 years out of it. Also driving my 2009 Tundra. Sure it doesn't compare to the new $75,000 or $100,000 pickups but it looks and runs great and it's fully paid for.

Rust, sadly, is why I don't have my old '99 model car. Still, that car lasted more than 20 years (over 15 in our ownership). Can't expect much more from a daily driver car with salted roads in winter and no garage.

I took my Grand Am too a meet up once and it was a meetup for cars that are not 100% perfect so these cars had some imperfections and you know what it was so relaxing it didn’t feel like a competition. It was just fun too talk cars with people and ask why they really liked their choice of brand. Got some really good stories. This one guy had a 1996 Saturn manual with over 260,000 miles and he said it’s been past down in his family and last belonged to his dad that passed so he’s keeping the car alive for his dad. Just the stories you get there’s meaning behind everyone’s reasons

I have owned about 7 cars in my 70 years. 64 Ford Galaxy XL500 convertible, 68 Olds 442, 70 Plymouth Barracuda, 72 Plymouth Fury, VW bug, Opel Manta, 77 Chevy K5 Blazer, Subaru Wagon, 86 BMW ES that my older son is going to restore for his son, 73 Buick Electra 225, 2003 and 2004 Honda Element (first one was totaled by my son, driver ran him off the road). I still have the 2004. I loved them all. Favorites in order 64 Ford, olds 442, VW Bug, K5 Blazer, 73 Electra, BMW, Honda Element. I have owned the Element the longest and don’t have any plans on getting rid of it. I live in NYC and what I have seen are lowered Honda CRV’s all years. Must admit they look nice. Oh I only got rid of the Blazer when the price of gas went up so I bought the Subaru. If I have any regrets was getting rid of it.

I'm 59 years old, I've owned muscle cars, Jeeps, sports cars, a Corvette, and currently own a RX-7 convertible and a '92 Oldsmobile Achieva SCX. I've discovered that no matter what I own, there is an enthusiastic group of owners who love their cars and help each other keep them alive. I knew a guy in the Navy who was the biggest AMC station wagon enthusiast- his custom license plate on his AMC Hornet wagon said "3SPOD"- owning to an apparently rare 3sp manual with overdrive. He had a garage full of AMC parts he had collected over the years, and still loves station wagons, which have gone from uncool "Mom Mobiles" to cool rides these days, supplanted in uncoolness by minivans and crossovers. I look forward to when minivans are cool- which reminds me, I need to start looking for a 80's Chrysler turbo minivan with a stick shift before they are snapped up and become pricey. The more car lovers there are- no matter what they drive- the better!

And especially in the beginning of learning 'car care through repair', sitting in a driveway with what amounted to 'babys first tool kit', I had a blast and didn't care what anyone else thought. Now I have a 01 Sequoia, (that I also love), but I love it because it's not perfect. Neither was the cr-v and neither was the jeep I had before that. I'll never have a show car, but dang I can pull out my religiously-maintained and borderline-psychotic maintenance schedule, or all the travel pics of the car that got me safely there and back. One of the things I love about our local autocross club is the same mentality exists there. We get a diverse mix of new, old, cheap, expensive, fast, slow, modified, bone-stock, shiny, and rusty cars, owned and driven by people from all walks of life. When someone shows up with something rare or weird or different, it will attract plenty of attention, because we are all car people and love to see how all these different cars can perform on course.

He had a red two door Impala he bought in Atlanta and drove in back to Kentucky. He even owned a 61 Corsair truck. Most all of these cars color was rust. Why did he love them? He did wreck one back in mid 60’s. I’m not really sure. But he still loved them. Miss you Dad.

At the age of 22, newly married and a first time home owner when we needed another car I went looking. I passed this absolutely forlorn looking 1970 Plymouth Furry 1 sunk to it's axles in mud on the property of an auto electric repair shop. I asked and learned that the previous owner got work done and wouldn't pay for it so it now belonged to the car shop. All they needed was $300 CDN to pay off the outstanding bill and it was mine. In my heart it was a virtually an abandoned pet sort of feeling. I had too rescue it! It had a rebuilt 318 cubic inch bullet proof engine. It was a 4dr sedan. It had ridiculous cow poop brindle burnt orange chalked out paint! It was manual steering so it was like steering a monster truck in parking lots. It was a free upper body work out every time I drove it. Of course the wifey hated the steering! I put 4 used winter tires on it so I was good for summer and winter. All season tires didn't exist I don't think. Not in 1980. Over the years I put a Chrysler wrecking yard rad into it. The distributor wore out too so I got a used electronic one and bought the other electronic bits new and my elder brother wired it up for me. Furry 1s didn't have electronic ignitions so mine was unique. My father and I built a utility trailer for it and I installed a used hitch from a wrecking yard. Here is were I'm going to get beat up in the comments I'm sure. I wanted to take it into crown-land wood lots where I could collect firewood free of charge, so I tightened up the torsion rods in the front and got a set of used air shocks for the back and off I went with my chainsaw in my Plymouth virtual truck! I live in a medium sized city, just 160,000 population, where the highest speed limit is 80 Km/50 miles an hour. Yeah I couldn't pay for a car I didn't love. I have a 2018 Hyundai Ioniq PHEV (Plugin-Hibrid-Electric-vehicle) now. I love the variety of ways I can move myself down the road! The next car will be fully EV. I guess weird is just wonderful to me!

My first car was a 1994 Ranger, I loved that truck and I still do. I received tons of flack from people I didn’t know at Cars and Coffee meets because it wasn’t a GTi or Fox Body. I didn’t care, I waxed that thing constantly and had made that rig look like a million bucks no matter what time of year it was. There were a few that liked my truck, saw the pride of ownership and complimented my ol’ XLT. I’m still heartbroken it’s gone, however I have a 1996 Integra and a 2000 K3500 both in nice shape. Not perfect, but I show the same pride of ownership I did years ago. I like most Japanese imports, I honestly think there is too much you can do in the way of modifying a vehicle. However, that same love and pride of ownership is still there. It’s just channeled differently, those are my thoughts. Thanks Eric for sharing, your repair videos and hilarious commentary keep me around. I’ve actually learned to work on my Integra watching your videos!

But haven’t a daily driver that went through a winter was hard not to show. Hard to hide the cracked bumper and other things that were on the outside, even though I did everything I could to keep up with the guys and gals who were older, more stable in their lives etc. I found 20 years later I still have that labour of love. I’m glad that I get to drive anything. I know what it’s like walking in -40 winters taking transit having it die etc. At the end of the day I am glad it’s mine. I find now that the rust, hail damage and what not shows character. Plus it gives the car character. It doesn’t look like every other vehicle but I found keeping up a modded vehicle like I did 20 years ago was difficult. I used to be biased but if it runs and youre happy with it than thats all that matters.

I can fix it myself, the parts cost nothing, what you cant buy new is available in abundance in every scrapyard. And its dependable. Its 26 years old. It has 375k kilometers on the clock. Thats what i know of. Ive driven 85k km in it. Has never let me down. Even when a spider gear pin broke and busted a hole in the gearbox. I still managed to drive 40km to get home. 50€ gearbox and im driving again. When I got it in 2018 it was not in the best shape. Had to weld a few holes, paint a few spots. It has all electric windows, electric heated mirrors, AC. I got Vagsport leather heated seats for it, found and installed oem cruise control. Its a real blast to drive. And I love it for what it is. A means of transportation. And a dependable mate that will get u home.

Me and my 2 boys took a trip from Pennsylvania to Florida a few months ago for Cleetus and Cars. We took my 2001 Audi A4 that I purchased 2 years ago for $800 as a vehicle that really couldn't even get itself down the road. We had an absolute blast on the trip going there and back! I absolutely love my shitbox!

I bought a 1985 toyota mr2 that was in horrible condition, and was destined for the scrap yard. Spent 2 years fixing it up. its definitely not perfect, but it looks alright and passes all inspections now. I have so much fun in that car, partially because it's not perfect. Because its not perfect, I'm not afraid to drive it anywhere. If it gets damaged, it won;'t hurt the value any because it already wasn't worth much, and because I fixed it once I can do it again. If it was a perfect example, i'd be nervous to take it anywhere. But because it will never be a mint, valuable vehicle its very freeing to just be able to drive it like a normal car. Even better, i took it to a meet once and bumped into a previous owner, who was not only shocked it was still on the road, was very impressed with how good it looked now. Made me have a major sense of pride about my work on the car.

I've always been a muscle car guy, but it's like you just told my story. I've had many cool old muscle cars and loved them all, but the culture changed. It became a rich mans hobby. I recently bought and restored a 1992 Miata. I went to a couple of local import car meets and was blown away by how cool everyone was. Though the meets were "Import" there was a lot of domestic cars there too and everyone liked them too. I'm a 51 year old guy going to car meets with mostly people half my age and I'm fine with it.

I couldn't agree with you more man. I just bought a 2004 dodge neon srt4 which came out when I was in highschool. I've ALWAYS wanted one and now I can finally afford it. A lot of people don't understand why I got it.....they will never understand. It's an emotional connection. That's what it's all about. How it makes you feel. I just came upon your channel a few weeks ago and I've been binge watching. I wish I found you years ago! Love the content!

I have had a wide variety of vehicles over the years from basic economy cars to luxury vehicles. One of my favourite vehicles was a 1978 Honda Civic hatchback that I bought new. It was a fun little car to drive and was extremely easy on gas. Another vehicle of note was my 1991 Nissan Hardbody pickup. It came with the chrome package and I put a canopy on it. I kept that little truck for 20 years with virtually no problems. They were the least expensive vehicles that I owned, but I got a lot of enjoyment and good service from them.

I 100% agree! My fleet is old and not perfect. That is what makes me happy, I get to fix things and improve things and it’s how I differentiate mine from others. One of mine was built specifically as a show car but it was a culmination of tinkering and learning over the years. My EF hatch will not be the last car I build to show nor will stop enjoying all my other cars.

Man this was such an inspiring video. My first car was and still is a 2001 Lincoln Navigator 32V and boy the fact that it starts right up every morning 240K miles deep makes me feel like a million bucks. To all you out there with cars that you love solely because "well- it's mine...", I hope they run forever.

I don’t do shows. Really after 30+ years as a technician I’m all about Function over Pretty. I have a 99 suburban & a 88 Big block Dually. Both need paint. I’m in Texas we don’t have the Rust problem y’all have. I really like GM Obs trucks. & Harley Davidson’s growing up outside Milwaukee. I always had a thing for Full Dressed Harley’s. My Ride a 08 FLHTC. lol ke my truck it’s just enough technology. Fuel injection & that’s about it. My Suburban is the only one w/ 4wheel abs & air bags. But you do you. I like simple for my POV’s

That is the thing I love about Import guys. They truly just love cars. It doesn't matter the brand, the level of completion, or anything else. Hot Rodders, as in older car lovers, are way more judgmental. There are a ton of car "crazes" I wish would go away like: Carolina squatted trucks, stanced cars (were the camber is so bad they are driving on the inside of the rims) but, I am sure some of those guys wish something I love would go away as well. It is way more important to me, to see the love someone has for the entire automotive industry.

Respect all builds. :-) I'm in the Ford Galaxie Club of America, and it amazes me how angry some folks get when, say, a Galaxie owner does an LS-swap or something else that isn't a "perfect, original" restoration. For a car that *I* own, I want it to be as original as I can make it -- but if *YOU* want to build *YOUR* car with an LS-swap or a non-factory paint color, or a more modern interior, or whatever, then do it! You're keeping one of these classic cars out of the crusher, and that's all that *really* matters in the end!

What is really cool is the fact you and your son spent quality time together where you could pass on knowledge and wisdom and how to be a father one day. The other stuff is icing on the digital confection! BTW in my younger years I had a 1979 Fiat Spider that I rebuilt the engine and added twin carbs, header and free flow exhaust. Always a fun time at car events cause it was different from all the muscle and tuners.

We have a 442 convertible that drives "really nice" and is rented out for weddings and parades. We have cars with performance modifications for the strip or autocross. We have an SUV that can go on a 2000-mile road trip in complete comfort. So whatever you drive is fine, there's no one vehicle for every occasion. Wish I'd known you were down here. Beer and a burger would have been a given!

I do woodworking and a bit of stained glass. All creators know every flaw/mistake in each project. It doesn't take away from the beauty of the piece. I think of them as scars to show the struggles along the way. The same for my truck (older Tacoma). It has dents and clear coat issues but I love that truck and still look back at it after I park. Thanks Eric.

Good commentsEric. I am 54 years old and my first car was a ‘57 Chevy. A tough act to follow for many reasons but I went through several Subaru’s and very practical Honda’s after that and greatly appreciated every car I ever owned. I am still a Honda guy (all because of engineering but not the styling) and would not buy a GM product after about 1972 but to each his own. They are all just machines but I have always found them very interesting and have always been intrigued with peoples attractions to them. A very personal thing which I never fully understand but always appreciate.

After a long time waiting finally I got the digital cake on my actual birthday! Thanks, Eric! And I'm just the same, doesn't matter what you drive, as long as you love it. Used to own a not that loved VW Bug, wasn't the best bug arround, but I cared for it as best as I could as a broke College kid. Literally cried when I had to sell it. With all of it's defects, it was still my pride and joy. That's what the car community should be all about! Be safe, have fun and stay dirty everyone!

Love my old car. Year 2000 most advanced thing on it is the air con if you ignore the stereo 😉 Good old fashioned cable hand brake, cable clutch and doesn’t even have ABS. It’s about as pure a driving experience as you can get, and encourages proper braking technique. Handles like a big go kart too so it’s pretty fun to drive. I’ve done a ton of work as you can imagine given the age. A good learning experience fixing things up.

I drive a 2003 Toyota Avalon with 270,000 miles on the clock. She always starts and never leaves me stranded. Yeah she Burns a quart of oil every 3,000 miles but it sure beats having a car payment.
