the novel in my opinion is actually not well-written. the idea was good, but at times the story telling fell off. So your review makes me feel like the movie is better.
I honest to god believe justin isn't that morally sound. In comparision to the hollycouple, sure ,but my Unpopular opinion is why was this man going around for 2 yrs trying to make a movie out of a book that glamorizes ab*se!?! Evn with so many women raising alarm about the books impact on impressionable mind ever since. It seems he is now trying to do damage control or play silent victim ,and lucky for him both idiots blake and ryan are making it easy for him. The book is the problem in the first place. Wouldn't that mean justin was as tone deaf as blake.
I will say chapter 35, which is when they had the baby and named her Emerson after Rhyl’s brother, and she decided she wanted the divorce that was heart wrenching to read. They just went through this beautiful, joyous time of having a child. Then Lily makes the decision the divorce, relationship was ending that they were just be coparenting, but it didn’t seem as impactful in the movie. Neither Lily or Rhyl seemed that emotional during that scene in the movie, but in the book, Rhyl was sobbing, and it seemed like Lily was too
To those who haven't read the book, from the flowery cover and marketing, you'd be forgiven for mistaking it for a traditional romantic drama, when it's far more triggering than that. And while Lily doesn't stay with Ryle, she still allows him to coparent their daughter unsupervised, which feels like it wouldn't go as smoothly in reality.
Exactly, I thought the same untill i noticed ppl talking about DV. I was like what is that how come??. Then I read the both novels and I relaized what ppl mean.
1. The movie got rid of the scene where Rile stalked her apartment to find out where she lives but decided to keep the scene where he insisted on her last name. 2. The movie got rid of the powerful conversation between Lily and her mom about boundaries, forgiveness, and generational pattern but this movie is literally called 'It Ends With Us'.
Justin did an amazing job at bringing awareness to domestic violence abuse. It's a very real and important issue !! Not a romantic movie but real life drama!!
*****Trigger/Spoiler warning***** Being one of many who read both books, I'd say my biggest disappointment about the movie was the fact they left out what I thought was a critical scene from the book. The conversation Lily had with her mother when she told her she was not only pregnant, but what Ryle had done on multiple occasions. Lily expected Jenny to take Ryle's side and talk Lily into taking him back since she herself had done it so many times with Lily's father. However, Jenny didn't do that at all. Instead, Jenny gives her daughter decent advice about how we all have limits to what we'll put up with before we break. And each time we let someone get away something we told ourselves we would never put up with, it pushes our limits back. Each time the abuser is forgiven and the victim stays, it makes the next time that much harder to leave. Eventually the limits set, become non existent and the cycle of abuse continues. That's what happened between Lily's parents. Jenny begs Lily to not be like her, stay strong like she did at her father's funeral, not let go of the limits she has, and to break the cycle. From my perspective, I feel this scene brought Lily and Jenny closer as mother and daughter. Made Lily understand what was going through her mother's mind while Lily was growing up. Made Lily realize what Ryle had done wasn't her fault. And helped Lily make the right decision to leave in the end. In the movie this conversation didn't happen. The closest to it was Lily asking her mother why she never left, and Jenny's response was, it was easier to stay and she loved him. I didn't like the fact that Lily let Ryle have unsupervised visitation. However, more on that subject is addressed in the second book (It starts with us) and I was pleased with the outcome there.
I’ve read the two books. And i can say they really skipped that part. There are parts of the first book didn’t cut in the movie. They highlighted more on the abuse parts and left out the other best parts. My thoughts are, they hurried the half going to the end part. I really loved the book but the movie hmm not so much. I hope the second part will come out better.
you can pray God for his soul as his daughter. he will probably appreciate that duty ;). Because life is not just about physical materials and a TOO HUGE amount of incredible scientific coincidences lol ...
As someone who's read the book, regarding Ryle's backstory, I wondered why his parents would leave a gun lying around where a child could easily pick it up. They were portrayed as decent people in the narrative, and it might have been better had they gone into more detail.
I'm from an area with quite a strong gun culture & have heard similar horror stories when i was a child to make me wary of playing with guns. Tbh, not sure if they were actually true or just meant to scare me. But I can see it happening, many people in this neck of the woods leave their guns visible & loaded and do their best to teach their children the danger of said item. Some just don't make the right judgment call
I just saw the movie yesterday and I really enjoyed it. I held off on reading the book (busy mom life) and I’m glad I did. I decided to read the book after I watched the movie. The ending was so sad but it was also so inspiring in many ways. I came from trauma.. my parents were both abusive in a lot of ways towards each other and it was hard growing up. I’ve had my fair share of toxic relationships and I’m so glad I was strong enough not to stay and met my wonderful husband. I know this film resonated with a lot of women who are afraid and feel like they aren’t strong enough to leave. I hope it will help another Lily out there.
I liked the film, it's a beautiful movie, but I don't think domestic violence is anything like the depiction in real life. I mean Blake Lively is beautiful and just radiates on the big screen, her two male co-stars are also incredibly good-looking. DV in real life is not pretty, the families that experience DV also experience other disadvantages, like financial problems, there are no inner city apartments and many women who escape DV end up living in poverty.
I don’t think this is a fair criticism. DV looks different for everyone, just because it looks pretty on the outside doesn’t mean people aren’t going through struggle. The point of the movie wasn’t too tell everyone’s DV stories - just Lilly’s
You are so wrong. DV hits all people. Many many well educated women with their own money have been or are abused. They are actually the number one target for psychopaths looking for a “relationship”. Interestingly, surgeon is on the list of careers for psychopaths. Very few are serial killers, they are usually CEOs.
That’s the nature of the movies. They’re not reality. The actors are good looking. The story simplifies everything. Everyone has money. There’s a happy ending.
Honestly I just saw the movie with my wife, my sister and her boyfriend. In no way, shape or form did I feel like DV was romanticized. I feel like the people that are complaining are not too bright. It was a beautiful story about a girl being in an abusive household who eventually breaks the cycle by leaving her lunatic husband for the betterment of herself and her daughter. She also gets with the real love of her life at the end which is great. Personally I loved the movie. So did my family.

He shows the reality of the film and speaks out against domestic violence very accurately. Very disrespectful for this actress who wanted to take over his film. He talks about domestic violence, she's more about selling the film like Barbie and selling the beverage products and hair products along with the film's premiere. And the book writer selling nail polish and coloring books.
This was fiction even of DV, abusers don’t just leave you alone because you ask especially with a child involved. The happy ending was insulting because DV doesn’t stop with a divorce
I think it’s just a metaphor for breaking the cycle because lily’s mom went through one and so did lily. The abusive relationship cycle “ends with us” lily and Ryle.
I haven't read the book so I can't speak on that, but man the movie was very melodramatic and far-fetched. I was trying not to roll my eyes there towards the end.
I can understand if someone just saw Blake Lively and a flowery poster and went for it…but you’re right. All the trailers I saw literally showed him hitting her, kicking chairs, manipulating her and had voice overs of her saying things like “how would you feel if your daughter told you someone she loved was hurting her”. So i’m not sure where the misunderstanding was??
I don't watch the trailer for any movie if it's something I think I wanna see because so often they give away too much of the storyline where it twists or goes darker and it takes all the element of surprise out of it. I like to go in knowing nothing and yeah I can follow what's going along and understand because I'm not an idiot
I don’t even need to watch this movie to know that it is completely warped and twisted in the way that Hollywood is not only is capitalizing off of domestic violence but romanticizing and glorifying the trauma bond between abusers and victims. Anyone who has been through domestic violence or grew up in an environment where it was present knows the living hell that it is day in and day out to always be living on edge and walking on eggshells in fear that you might set off your abuser and end up in yet another confusing, mind boggling whirlwind of chaos and pain. My two sense is that if you are going to try to capture the reality of what abuse is then cut the flowers and charm and show the raw reality of it. It is dark and confusing, it is mind boggling and it destroys not only your nervous system but your perception of reality if you are lucky enough to make it out alive, and unfortunately not everyone does. My advice-put a trigger warning on it and let those who have really been through it tell the truth about what it’s like..not these people who are pumping out movies left and right with no real perception of the roles that they are embodying.
It is annoying that she goes from Ryle to Atlas and in both cases there's more of a trauma bond than love. Ryle is P.A. like her dad and Atlas was there for her when she and her mom were being subjected to P.A. or DV. I don't see any love.
I lived with my ex. husband and the last three years of my life was definitely not glamorous ! Both of my parents had passed away. To be kicked, spitting into my face , pulling my hair down to the floor ! I could write a book about true DV ! During, covid pandemic that when things were extremely difficult for me ! Mentally, physically, emotionally and financially I was absolutely exhausted and devastated ! The air in the tires he would let out or unhook the battery . All that I can say is never give up hope ! Yes, I walked out with blaming myself and embarrassed and ashamed ! I watched every single second of day and night ! Eggshells, just traumatized ! Just sending this text and crying, very triggering. I struggled every day to make ends meet !!! In Kentucky there was no help. Covid shut everything down and once it passed there was no rooms available ! I have fought many battles ! I ended up with SLE, which is Lupus and my therapist said, I had CPTSD. I will always have scars on my heart 💜 but I hope everyone knows that if I can get out so can you ! Please, never give up. What the hell are you going on about? It was a romance/drama about a girl who grew up in an abusive household but escapes and also ends up with the love of her life.
So does it mean rayl was a good man but his anger controls him and he becomes blind when he gets angry ? Or he was awake and he was hurting her on purpose and she puts excuses to him that he is a good guy ? Can someone explain me please ?
SPOILER OF THE FILM: I have not read the book, but the film portrays it as you initially think he has not intentionally hurt her (he “accidentally”hits her while trying to take something out of the oven) but when the film reaches the climax, you realize that he has been intentionally hurting her all along. You see the earlier scene in a flashback again and the viewer understands that he intentionally hit her during the scene when he burned his frittata in the oven.

I agree I would’ve liked that ending as well. Atlas has a lot of anger issues to. I just think Lily would’ve been better to have a lot more time on her own, raising a child and developing a strong friendship with Atlas maybe

I am discussing the situation in the videos that appeared on the youtube for me. I don't need to write again the same opinion I have. But we can also talk about Blake bullying a Norwegian interviewer, how she didn't have good relationship with actresses she co-stared films, for instance. How she acted like a kind of diva/narcissist with Baldoni. Sorry she avoided, against Baldoni wishes, to realize a film who could help woman with problems with DV. Herself, her alcoolic beverage, hair product line, her husband and his film to be sold with the film she is in portrayed wrongly as romcom was more important for her. Pity.
What do I take from the movie? Domestic violence and abuse causes have been set back decades by a mind-candy puff piece of movie. Such an injustice to the world's women, men, and children who are victims of violence and abuse. There is nothing flowery or acceptable in violent treatment. There is nothing pretty and inviting when one person mistreats and harms (physically and/or emotionally) another. And perhaps the most tragic message this movie exudes is that domestic violence and abuse makes "lively" entertainment. JMHO
As someone who read the book (and hated it), I really dislike how the cast (except Justin) are trivializing the seriousness of DV and promoting it as cutesie flower girl romcom. Trying to turn this into barbenheimmer with Deadpool/Wolverine is also super tone-deaf. The movie also massively downplayed the abuse that is in the book and makes it much more ambiguous. It doesn’t help that the source material is utter garbage, but yeah the movie doesn’t help
This is strange open ending, a disappointment. The movie didn’t elaborate how her husband would react at the end per his behavior pattern, nor reward a genuine love with a happy ending. It looks like an unfinished work.

The same dude that had a crazy rough upbringing. The same dude that randomly forcefully cornered you in a girls bathroom and randomly just fought your husband in the middle of a packed restaurant unprovoked!! The same guy your parent caught wearing and sneaking around in your dads clothes. That’s the guy you want to bring home to mom and your family?! The guy who’s moms is constantly getting beat by her unstable relationships?! That’s the guy that’s going to be best for her and her daughter. Wow family life is going to be not fun? She literally carved domestic violence back into her life.

Like I understood that Atlas was her first love, and that her and Rhyl had now been separated for a while since Emerson was about 11 months old. I thought really you’re just gonna get what a happily ever after with Atlas it just seemed odd .

Good storyline & acting, beautiful cinematography featuring Boston but it glosses over the abuse, especially when she leaves him which as we all know, is the most dangerous time for a woman!!
This says she found out she was pregnant with a baby girl, and that's wrong. She didn't find out until she had the baby. And that's when she decided she had to break the cycle
I dont know how Baldoni was able to pull off this double role. He was manipulative & a real control freak. Biting somebody is a pretty sick behavior. Lily did the right thing dumping him at the end. Ryle needs professional help & support. He is also unfit as a doctor. His licence could be taken away. He needs to put his sh*t together really fast. I would not allow him to see his daughter without a supervisor. Ryle is mentally disturbed.

You wrong actually Women have to take responsibility for their choices. If we are ever going to have equal society which I believe is a illusion. Women need to take accountability for their actions. Stop blaming men. Women want all the good things from men without the bad. But Women expect men to accept all the flawed behavior from what a women brings to the table. More men are waking up to this reality. When it comes to accountability and women it goes out the door. But men are forced with accountability. Men have suffered the consequences from this in family court. Lost of job and lost of income. This is the reason why more men are stand off is when it comes to marriage or commitment.
What you are seeing in this movie is a a raw rendition of the opportunistic mating choices women act upon. The only looser in this story is Atlas waiting on her.

Far too many women die at the hands of their supposed partners. As a global United Nations study shows “The disparity between the shares of male and female victims of homicide perpetrated exclusively by an intimate partner is substantially larger than for victims of homicide perpetrated by intimate partners or other family members: roughly 82 per cent female victims versus 18 per cent male victims.”
Did she officially divorce Ryle aka husband before she hook up with Atlas? I want to know this before I go watch this movie because I don't like cheaters. I hate movies where the girls jumps from guys to guys cheating along the way before officially calling is off with the first guy.
All I have to say Blake is not a good person. I love Justin as a person and an actor. The way she treated him. She is no A lister. I will not watch the movie due to her behavior and also I am a victim of DV. She reminds me of Brie Larson who was not nice to the other actors.
What I disliked about the movie from a male perspective (not having read the book) is the fact that she takes no accountability. 1.) She lied about her ex owning Root. The first visit to Root, she should have told her husband about him and introduced them. 2.) The second time at Root she lied again and went to the restroom hoping to see him. They were caught inside the restroom together. 3.) She lied about the tattoo meaning. Most man does not want to be married to a lady with a tattoo that symbolizing another man. 4.) She chased her husband when he asked for space because he was upset. She then walked in front of the edge of stairs and he pushed her down the stairs (he was wrong), but it appeared to be a reaction. 5. ) Lily told her husband that she may still love another man. 6.) When she had an issue with her husband she then ran to her ex liver. **The abuse was not warranted, but unless I missed something. I feel as if she purposely ruined her marriage. **
This!!! I watched this film with my partner and we wer like wtf... this girl is taking no accountability lol. The moment the real issues started was when she saw her high school lover.. and she tried keeping it a secret, still had feelings for him etc. but no shes the victim even though she lied multiple times and said to her husabnd "idk" when getting asked if she loved another man... its comical. all the characters had a bad upbringing and had faults, but the film made it seem that the girl was the victim the whole time... and guess what when the film ended majority of the females starting clapping and cheering 😂😂😂 unbelievable...

It’s unfortunate. She made this movie look like a romcom. She was completely tone deaf. He’s the only one talking about domestic violence while she doesn’t seem to care she took his movie and took liberties and full control. Nothing less than what I mean girl bully would do.
29/8/24 this movie the only mistake is choosing this actress Blake, she can not act anything make me want to watch this movie 🎥 just stay at home raise up 4 kids please. One Ryan annoying us that’s enough
While Blake lively is an average actress she is no Meryl Streep and always plays the same way in all the movies I have seen of her. I thought the movie was more a chick flick.....and didnt focus on the domestic violence in a way I would have expected it to. Would not recommend the movie ...it was OK. ....I must read the book as I am guessing it would be far better

OMG YOU HAVE IT ALL WRONG!!!! You didn’t see the same movie I saw. She just pushed away a great man towards the arm of the abuser. His family was always great and loving. The other guy was the one who grew up witnessing abuse and yet abuse in his upbringing. Statustics show that homes that have domestic violence has a very high chance of the children being domesticated violent. Ryle (meaning valiant and courageous) relationship was scared by Lily she thought she was being abused but was not! All this was injected into her head by Atlas. (The real person that resembles her father as it’s foreshadowed when you see him wearing her dad’s clothes.)

You never get the impression of abuse until Atlas ‘forced’ himself on her in the girls bathroom, then Atlas ASSUMED that she was being abused. Then the second Ryle came her rescue (As any husband would do when a random man corners his wife and asks “what’s going on?” Atlas instantly starts to fight him without provocation. WHAT PERSON IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD START A FIGHT KICKING AND SCREAMING IN THEIR OWN RESTAURANT WITH PATRONS IN THERE. ATLAS EMOTIONS ARE ERRATIC. Ryle may flip chairs and throw cell phones on the ground (mind you if you found a number of a man/girl that your wife/husband had secretly stored. I’m sure you would want to break a phone.)
