Life is indeed very short. I’m a cancer survivor of 11 years. Cancer killed my father and my mother spent the last 3 years of her life in misery. That’s why I retired as soon as I could. You just never know what is ahead. Starship Troopers- they needed better weapons 😊

30 years old and a cancer survivor of 1 year now! It is definitely a scary, life altering event and he is correct. Do what you love with the people you love while you can. Not everyone gets so lucky and I am now working with my wife on our life’s dream. We finally got our first camp in since the diagnosis and it was surreal. Even the small moments in the woods have helped a lot.

Life turns on a dime. Because of an accident I'll never camp again - lucky to be alive, but never take for granted simple things like walking around! Get that air and sun whenever you can, you don't know when you may not get the chance again. Thanks to streamers like Luke, people like me get to live vicariously - it brings back great memories (camping was a family thing that i carried into adulthood) and sometimes i swear i can smell the pine!

Hey, I'm sure you've considered it already and stuff, but here in California the majority of state campgrounds have at least one or two wheelchair accessible sites, and Im sure that's the case elsewhere too. I'm not sure if this would even help whatever your particular situation is, or if you've already tried it and couldn't do that, but just thought I'd let you know to check out campgrounds for accessible sites!

That thunderstorm sounds awesome in the mountains 😍 we love sitting on the porch when it storms. I've taken the beef jerky and freeze dried bbq and put it in a cup of boiling water to simmer. Life is short, I e been given a second third and fourth chance. I now live every day as if it's my last. I've survived cancer, a brain tumor and two heart attacks, in 15 months.

Wow, your video recording and production is fantastic, Luke! These videos are quickly heading towards movie-quality, and you are capturing the atmosphere, sounds and feel perfectly. Really enjoy your content, and you can turn a bad weather day into something pretty special better than anyone. Your comments about health ring true. When we are fit and healthy we really take things for granted. When your health goes bad and you can't do the things you love (or even everyday tasks) it hits hard. Make the most of life whilst you can, great advice... Brilliant stuff mate, keep them coming!

Speaking of outdoor adventures, have you heard of the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series? I noticed this year bears in our area (Idaho mountains) acting "out of character". We had a non existent huckleberry season for some strange reason so their feeding habits were weird. Our camp lost a 50lb bag of elk meat hung really, really high up. The camp across from us lost half of their deer that was also hung really high! They had no fear also of us....

Canadian rations. They are called IMPs not MREs. In fact, IMPs came first (circa 1980). With that in mind, perhaps MREs should be referred to as 'American IMPs'. 😁 The first bag you opened was the LMC which is not a meal. It is additional calories/snacks to augment the daily diet in more challenging circumstances such as the arctic or long-range patrolling. The little snack packets can be used in lieu of full rats for certain tactical situations. As soon as the IMPs are issued they get stripped down to the basics and all the unnecessary crap removed. These usually get tossed back in the bag and put in the ruck. Saves weight and space. It's not 'plain' hamburger. It's 'pain' - French for bread. All labels have to be bilingual.

Hexamine or trioxane tablets, MIL used for years. I've used the trioxane myself in a similar stove with great results. Friend Mike used to take them on a hike, reason I mention this, always put it at the top of his pack. One hot day felt heat on his shoulders, swivel in his head to find out the pact was smouldering. He immediately dropped out of the pack, shook out the contents. Those trioxide tablets have gotten so hot they started to catch fire. It could have been a mess, so the lesson is you have to keep them in a cool dry place. Ingenious idea of using the bubble wrap to melt and seal the hole. Have whittled a stick to jam in the gas tank where the cap was lost before. Great video. I really love the string lights. Gives it a more camp, cozy feeling compared to the extendable bright white LED light in newer videos. Rogue Billy goat once ate a hole the size of a basketball in a sheet mom hung up on the line to dry, then a big hunk out of my bicycle seat. Came back the next day and ate another hole in a sheet, which mom was none too happy about. A gentleman came walking down from up the Creek and said have you seen a billy goat? My mom said that dad burn things done are holes in two of my sheets and a big hunk of my kids bicycle seat! He said oh dear let me see if I can call him. The goat 🐐 came trotting right out of the woods and followed him home like a dog. Mother said you better keep that thing tied up! LOL 😂

Pertaining to your question about bears and your gas cap. Yes, I had a friend who was clearing trees and brush around his hunting blind. He went back to the house for lunch, and left his chainsaw and tools out at his blind. He came back to find his chainsaw missing and his metal gas can destroyed. It was smashed and had teeth marks in it. After walking around a little he found his chainsaw, the cap and handle chewed on and the blade licked (presumably) clean. After talking to a few people about it, we learned that bears love anything that gives off an odor, including petroleum products. Something to keep in mind when camping in bear country

20:23 Ex-Canadian Army here; so about the hamburger bun...for a great many years the IMP's had a small rectangular portion of bread. Then, within the last 10 years or so, they introduced an actual hamburger into the menu lineup: 2 round hamburger patties with packets of ketchup and mustard. So they then just turned the rectangular bread in pretty much all the meals into a round bun; you can also get 2x wheat tortillas, the same as those in US MRE's. As for the "plain." its actually "pain," French for "bread," as all IMP labeling is bilingual.

Yay the music is back. Luke I thought this was the hurricane video. I usually watch at night but dove right in and from the opening scene I was nervous as heck...lol. Your set up was fantastic, it looked so cozy and you sir looked well rested from beginning to end. You are a real McGuyver having fixed that lawn mower with bubble wrap. My condolences to the family of those who have passed on.

Loved this video; it gave me all the warm fuzzies to go out on my own hike tomorrow. I’m with you - you HAVE TO get out there and do the things you want to, because, like you said, life is short. Have adventures. See what’s out there. Experience the world, even if it’s within a 50 mile radius of your front door. Just get out there and live.

In more than one video, Luke, have I've seen you use/test what I've affectionatly called "Pocket Stoves," like they can FIT your POCKET, your pants or shirt. Some of them are smaller than the fuel canister that fuels them. I know you're into camp stoves--me too. The "Pocket Stoves" always grab my atttention. These little stoves--can cook an entire dinner. Whoever engineered or designed those things, props to ya. Oh yea, did I mention??? It fits in your pocket!! lol...

When I deploy a tarp, I use a ridge line with attached prusik knots… this provides needed support to prevent sagging while the prusik knots keep it taunt. With practice, a hanked ridgeline can be secured in mere minutes. I can fully deploy a tarp in 5 minutes, easy. Hank your lines properly. Use lightweight stakes. And pitch lower… Don’t attach lines to the tarp, use loops with a toggle. That’s it, quick, simple, and easy. As far as bears go… a gas tank is nothing. My buddy Danny was building a cabin up out of Chewelah Washingtion, bordering the National Forest. Earlier that week, he’d delivered three bundles of styrofoam insulation. Each bundle was 4’x8’x4’ , and was to be used to insulate the underside of the cabin. Each bundle of styrofoam contained 12 sheet… that’s a sheet 4” thick, for a total of 36 sheets. Well along comes a bear… who apparently thought they needed a snack… the bear, or perhaps bear(s), ate one bundle, and destroyed another… leaving scattered styrofoam, all over, and strangest piles of undigested white scat, all over that mountain side. Piles… They must have thought, they’d stumbled across the worlds largest Rice Krispy Treat… who knows? Thanks for the video Luke! Stay dry and safe. And beware of white bear scat!

Here in the pacific northwest, I was taught by my stepdad to always hang our gas jugs and the power heads of our chainsaws high in a tree at the end of the day and wrap them in tin foil. My stepdad was a tree faller for 40+ years, and when helping him in highschool and my early twenties we would often be working in places far from an accessible road. So we would leave most of our equipment out in the woods rather than pack it out with us at the end of the day. In his time in the woods he had found that both bears and small vermin were attracted to the scent of fuel and oil, resulting in more than a bit of lost revenue for him. Hanging the jugs and saws in the trees with rope kept the bears away, while the tin foil wrapped around them discouraged the smaller vermin. On top of that, he always kept a lighter and a length of poly rope with him so he could melt the rope to repair a damaged fuel/oil tank/jug.

Your story about the bear biting the gas tank reminded me of something that I saw about 30 years ago. In Labrador every summer there are forest fires. Most are started by lightning storms. The forestry department there has three lightning detector stations which send messages via satellite to the computer in the forestry office in Goose Bay. The computer triangulates the lightning strike messages and plots the lightning strikes on a map. Then helicopters are sent out to fly over the areas which were struck by lightning. Once upon a time, I was invited to go out with the crew who service the lightning detector stations. The lightning detector station is shaped like a teepee, with a round satellite antenna on top, solar panels around the sides, and there are three steel cables holding the device steady, anchored to the ground. It all looks very high-tech. Except for what is hanging off the guy wires. Each guy wire had a quart bottle of Javex brand bleach tied to it, and swinging in the wind. Of course, I asked why there were bottles of bleach hanging off the guy wires. Black bears, the foresters said. Apparently, the black bears were breaking the glass solar panels and drinking the liquid part of the solar panels. The foresters went to the wildlife officers, and they asked an animal behaviourist what to do about the bears eating the solar panels. When bears are about to devour their prey, they check to ensure that the prey is dead. So, they look for any sign of life, such as movement. After some discussion, the foresters and the wildlife officers came up with the idea of hanging quart-sized bottles of bleach off the guy wires. The bottles swing in the breeze. When the bear bites the bottle, he gets a small amount of bleach in the mouth, which is enough to drive him away for a few days. Of course, after a while, the bleach is gone, and needs to be replaced. Which is why the Labrador Forestry fire fighting budget has a line for a hundred quart bottles of bleach every year. Also, on the Canadian MREs, they have a reputation for causing constipation, so most Canadian soldiers try to get boxed lunches when they are going in the field. One of them, the supposed "ham omelette" is known among the infantry as "lung in a bag". Also. rather than boil-in-a-bag, you really haven't lived until you have warmed up an MRE on the hot exhaust of a snowmobile! A friend of mine who was seconded to the Kiwis for 6 months a few years ago complained that the Kiwi rations were mostly mutton, and, worse, they were heavy because they were canned, not the boil-in-bag that we have here. I really enjoy your videos, keep it up!

I think this is the best video and sound Ive seen on RU-vid. It was done very professionally. I was hoping for more on knowledge on camping in storms. Camping in a area of thunderstorms in mountainous, hilly ares can dicey, trying to find the best area to avoid being hit by lightning or flooded out. Keep up the excellent work.

I had purchased the litefighter 1 and my wife got a second one for me based on your previous reviews. My only problem with the 1 person was size. I’m 63 years old and 6’ 3” and though I could make it work it wasn’t quite spacious enough. I wouldn’t want to be stuck in it for full days at a time. So . . . I sold both and waited on the new batch of LF 2s to come back in stock. I ordered the day the email showed. It was delivered and I just pulled it out of the box tonight. BTW, I did get the 4 season attachment. VERY EXCITED TO TRY IN A Northeast Ohio WINTER BLIZZARD. Thanks Luke for turning me on to Litefighter. (Also have a lanshan 2 Pro seamsealed)
