Depending on when it was built and what the code was at the time - unknown - but modern single-slope roof codes require a minimum grade, like 2:12 (two inches of pitch for every 12 inches of distance between the eave (low edge) and peak or ridge (high edge). Yours obviously had much less than that, if any - leading to the no bueno result over time. This has been a fascinating series to watch. I’m not much into crochet, but I am all-in on this. Thanks for taking us along your journey.

We have flat roofs where I live. The slopes are always accounted for and they all lead to drains that go through the walls, then dump outside at ground level, some continue underground and all take the rainwater to street drains. All roof and street drains require maintenance to remove debris and clean out. At least twice a year.

Exactly! I cringe at some of the stuff I see go straight to the bin! They are always saying how great the old wood is compared to what you get now days, & it's free! If you don't do furniture just move the boards tighter together like the do fences when the shrink. You could get a plainer (not that I know how to do that, but I've seen such things on RU-vid) save tons of money! & it looks like you have more time than money in this deal. Your hard work is commendable for SURE! Time will go by & you will have a great house for alot less $. I hope.

You shouldn’t have to demo the chimney to get the flashing off. It should be installed in a mortar joint. You should be able to cut and dig out the mortar joint to pull out the flashing. The new flashing will go back in same place with new mortar pointing installed. By the way, the flashing is installed in what is called a “raglet”.

@Kira_Martel
@Kira_Martel 3 месяца назад
It's totally fine for places like California, Arizona, etc. and those places were growing rapidly at the time this house was built, so buildings of this style were popular, but it was a truly terrible idea to do something like this in the rainy Pacific Northwest. It looks great, but we have far too much rainfall and fog condensation to make it practical. This was around the time in history when we stopped being as regionally-specific with our architecture and construction, and as you can see it leads not just to cultural loss, but structural loss as well
@lolofunslayer4953

@@jnl.,where I live in England the houses around here were built between 1930s and 1960s and all have the original sloping tiled roofs. Many of the flat roofed garages ( mostly built later than the houses as an after thought) have had the roofs repaired or replaced. That said they must replace their flat roofs as they are a vital part of the design,but incorporate a small slope and keep them well maintained.

I blame the Californians. Flat roofs make sense there where it doesn't rain much and basically never snows.
@blazertundra
@blazertundra 3 месяца назад
When maintained, they work extremely well in central/southern Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California. It's dry most of the year, and as long as you keep the drains clear, the torrential rains will flush harmlessly down the gutters. Especially in the PNW, trees and squirrels dropping junk down the drains alone is enough reason to never install a flat roof. One interesting way of dealing with the flat roof craze I've seen in Northern California is to have a shallow pitched or gabled roof and a decorative parapet surrounding the roof to give the illusion of flatness. You still get the issue of the drains, but at least water doesn't want to accumulate in the middle of the roof.

Jenna - if no one mentioned it on the other episode, the reason for the rocks/soil on the roof is to stop birds from using your roof to break shells and other items that may contain food. It's easier for them to pick through the pieces than to try to pry something open. Also, here in USA succulents sell for a lot of money. Tedious task, but you could have dug them up and sold them and helped to make a little extra budget money.

That looked like moss much more than it did succulents.

At this point, friend, the focus is getting a working house and a roof that isn't a hazard. Meticulously digging up the succulents (and moss and weeds) just costs them time, which could cost them money.

I don’t think they’re that desperate for money. That wouldn’t make more than a couple thousand at best for hours of work. Each video they make probably makes at least that, if not more with the sponsorships.

Tip for the roof: I noticed when you were removing it there's A LOT of moss on the roof. Moss is murder for any roof, as it'll hold moisture. Moisture = weight. While you cannot remove the roof, do this to buy time 1. Wait for a week of like, no rain in the forecast. Then take off the tarp on the one part you can't pull and remove the moss. Afterward LEAVE IT UNCOVERED. Let it dry out. Then tarp it before it rains again. This will buy you some time . 2. Put some support beams inside for the roof. They make jack like ones in home Depot too. You can do both without a permit. That water will kill your roof and that tarp isn't helping

A couple we used to hang out with when we were first married used to have a person who played bagpipes in their neighborhood. It was in a suburb of St. Louis, MO. We used to love to sit on their back porch and listen to them play.

I really don't understand why all of this needed to go. If the timber in those beams was ok, then simply jacking the roof back up to the correct height would have been far easier. And are you looking to out a bitumen / green roof back on?

Instead of carrying your rain-filled containers to empty them. Consider buying a sump pump & enough hose to reach outside. Then you'd just have to lower the pump into the container & in a minute or two, you'll have moved all the water outside! Hopefully you'll have a water-tight roof on soon & won't need to catch all that water anymore! Good luck!!

Can someone enlighten me, please? Why are they so happy, that the roof is in such a good shape underneath the tat, yet they take everything off and throw it in the bin? And why needs the sealing/flashing of the chimney go? Does anybody know or is it because of architectual changes no one but Jenna knows about (so most of you wonder, too.)

Here in the uk, we sometimes put scaffolding around the house, but stick sheet metal over the top to create a temporary roof. Stick some plastic sheets around the scaffolding and that creates a barrier from all weather. Keeps all the house dry, and means you can work in all weather. Is this something you’ve looked at?
