Take this, if you are an accountant, lawyer, doctor, fashion designer, furniture person, etc anybody in Nigeria can hire you irrespective of your region provided you are good at your job, they will neglect their ethic person over you. The main problem with Nigeria's economy isn't the minimum wage -- it is the MAXIMUM WAGE of all public servants in Nigeria (including allowances, security votes, contracts, etc). The extremely high emoluments of our leaders is the main cause of our corruption, the main driving force of inflation in our markets, and the reason criminals are always attracted to leadership in Nigeria.

I appeal to Nigerian leaders in all sphere of political office to continue disgracing themselves to the world. Let them continue to exhibit their greed and killing spree for power and money. What would make a political officeholder earn millions of Naira as salary per month and recommend less than 60k minimum wage for workers who they begged for their votes? The same people who would put in 35 years of service yet receive almost nothing as gratuity when they retire. Meanwhile, the minimum qualification for a political officeholder and a civil servant is a Secondary School Certificate. While the politicians loot the country dry within only 8 years of "service"; the civil servants will pick peanuts after 35 years of service. Can't the highest-paid political office holder in Nigeria earn a maximum of 5m Naira per month? After all, they say they are there to serve. Shame on those who play down on workers' demands. May God begin to reward them accordingly now. Wicked people who are in partnership with darkness to destroy Nigeria!!!

Any state in Nigeria that can not afford to pay minimum wage above 200k should be merged with its neighboring state. It shows such state can not function without oil money, and therefore it’s not worth of being a state.

Lagos State is the largest in population and internal revenue generation but has allocation for 20 local governments while states like Jigawa state has 26 local government. Think of that. How do you expect that same country to merge states that can't pay for minimum wage. Mathematically it does not make sense as it puts burden on the state that can. Today I have heard the most logical explanation against the inflation that the new minimum wage will lead to. Thank you Prof. The prices of everything has already moved up without increasing minimum wage, so I don't get it when that has already limited the people from surviving. Increase minimum wage and reduce the cost of fuel. You will see wonders, miracle. Inflation will go down, I promise.

Thats because the best teachers are not willing to work for poor remuneration. U can see the ripple effect already of poor salaries. U are scared of hospitals because there are quacks there now and many are not even motivated to work. The best hands are in uk, Canada and d likes. U can see that those who can even help the country and no longer in d country or are not motivated enough to give their best. Why do u think policemen ask of tips from road users? Because of poor salaries. U wouldn't see anyone with aspirations wanting to be a policeman. Its a job left for the desperate and the undesirable. So u can see that there isn't any hope in sight. Go to the universities the best students don't want to be lecturers anymore because of poor remuneration. The brain drain in professional sector is killing this country gradually. How do u thing private corporations are making record profits? Because they try to get the best hands and match it up with enticing benefits. Let the state governors try this and see if they will not be making billions of naira in revenue very soon.

It's because of how the wholesalers and retailers on the streets will react. Once the minimum wage goes up, the ordinary lady selling puff puff on the streets will increase her price, so will all those both in the formal & informal sector of the economy. Let's not forget that those selling in markets are not paid the minimum wage, but once they find out the salary of you the buyer, they will increase their prices too.

What is this word by state governors we can't pay Are they paying the money from personal pockets? Your FG allocation increase is for what aside other funds FG gives for development? And how many of them and doing the development? Once elected their target is stock money for re-election. This is the money for thugs and court judges to destroy their people and degrade their environment all the more. This is also to tell you the level of knowledge of human & material and financial mgt. The are not good managers. They are not qualify to be there to preside over any of this resources because they are not resourceful themselves. The governors are only thinking about themselves and not the people. The resource of this nation is enough to take all if there's no mismanagement. They prefer carrying this money to abfoad, train their children. Build houses and make that place heaven of life to the detriment of the masses. Let them stop this misuse of these funds.

Labour Unions shouldn't accept any amount less than 150k as minimum wage with the economic realities on ground. • The FG and the sub-national government should set their priorities right. • They should cut the cost of governance across board and block all the many loopholes for corruption in the system. • They should address the issue of multiple taxation on businesses and make the business environment more conducive by addressing the pain points of many business concerns. • The FG should look seriously at the possibility of adjusting the national revenue sharing formula in favour of the sub-national government. • 150k should be the irreducible minimum wage going by the economic realities on ground for any right thinking government. Labour Unions, if it would take another indefinite strike at the end of the 5 day window you gave the government, it's in order. 150k should remain the irreducible minimum from your team.

Wow. I have been taking note of reactions to my post and I realize that there is a disconnect between logic, reality vs expectations. You people expect the government that recently increased judges salary from 15Milllionn to 45 million to cut on government excess. The government that allowed the demolition of Landmark beach front only to reverse cause after few days. The point here is that you expect your government to all of a sudden make rational decisions. I was privileged to travelled a lot around nigeria asking what the situation is. For example, some workers in Bauchi state have not been paid salary of up to 3 years. I believe federal government and few states can pay it's workers whatever minimum wage but they also have means to increase their revenue by passing down the cost to Nigerians. Gone are the days that Nigeria had more money due to increase in oil generating capacity or global oil price increase. Please Nigerians think rationally. But then, I can't expect that because there is this magic that happens when you live in a society where things actually work and you study society as a complex systems that is a produce of it's activities and social embeddedness with the system. I rest my case.
@samchs222
@samchs222 3 месяца назад
@@josephigama9842 so whatever government earns should be spent on the selected few that work for the government? How about the small businesses and schools that are struggling in this economy? How do u expect owners to suddenly increase salaries to something close to minimum wage? I remember recently when ASU went on strike for increase in lecturers salaries. I knew what would come next was increase in tuition fees. Those few people from poor families that could use education as a way to get more opportunities can no more afford increase of more than 100% tuition fees in some schools. I'm very aware of the excesses in government spending as the money is stolen en masse. But at best, those stolen money just means they would go into implementing the projects that they were assigned for. I saw first hand in northern states how significan portion of government budget goes into paying salaries. It's from the rest that they steal. If government increase minimum wages to 4x that would translate to increase of pensions, and other people at different levels. In effect, we are looking at at least 3x of Salary allocation from what it is currently. So if at best salary alone is 20% of government spending, 3x would mean 40% increase of the budget for just salaries. I have seen infrastructures suffer in many states just because a large percentage of money left after project and debt service is just enough for salaries which can not be touched. How do you expect projects and initiatives that needs funds to happen of you have increased budget by 40% on just salaries. Mind you the only way we can raise that money is depleting foreign reserve, debt, raising taxes. The next 2 years would be exciting to see

@@vivianchioma8799 last time I checked The President dont get to decide how many commissioners a Gov can have in his state or neither the number of personal assistants. Does the President get to tell states the number of civil servants they can employ? Each states gets FAARC every month. Does the President get to tell them how to spend it? How about states working on increasing their IGR'S to make more money and engaged in meaningless development? Continue to blame the President while spearing your thieving Govs

Labour and TUC by now, should have called on their affiliates to start sensitising andi mobilising for an all round strike should this grand standing on the living wage continues. This will send a strong message down their cold spines.

We dont need salary increament. It will crash the economy. What will need is for the prices of goods and services to come down
@blessingharuna4404
@blessingharuna4404 3 месяца назад
This should not crash the economy, because the cost of goods and services is already high. This increment is long overdue. This your thesis won't fly, because everything is high, the best solution is that this government should cut cost of governance.

Do you know the ripple effect of 100k minimum wage? Pivate and small businesses such as private schools, public transportation, food retailers etc will have to pay the same minimum wage. To meet up with that, they will increase their cost of goods and services by more than 100% . It will be so bad that the economy cannot withstand it.

This case is like taking the children of Israel from the land of bondsge into the promise land and some people are saying No, we are comfortable the way we are now , we don’t want to step into the land of promise, we will continue to enjoy the suffering. Well Nigeria the ball is in your court. Play it well. Cheers!
