In this episode I have a lovely sail but after an overnight sell in the anchorage kept me up all night I decided to call it a day and head home.

We have added a winch master remote to our windlass - you can drop/raise the hook from the helm. Easy to install and much better value,use than some of the “marine” brands…

When berthing, use the midship cleat, the boat can only pivot so much when midship is on the pontoon, So easy to lose the bow or stern if you are lines ashore from either of those, Give sailing Cadoha a watch, they use a bridle from the chain to a rear winch to turn the boat into the swell rather than side on, 👍🏻

Look forward to it. I’ll be anchoring solo for the next few days so I’ll let you know how that goes too.

Porth Elian is renowned for bad swell! Better to go in to Amlwch Port if you need respite and a good sleep. Have you looked at a passage plan from Conwy over the swatch and down to Abermenai or Llanddwyn on one tide? Caernarfon Bay gives all the options which ever the wind direction. Happy to help if you want advice.

Hi Steve. Good to hear from you. Not been brave enough to venture over the Swatch yet but definitely planning a trip to Caernarfon Bay at some point soon so so any advice would be gratefully received.

Ease the main sheet and the kicker /vang when unfurling the main. Allow the boom to raise up to the tack. In the start of this vid you see the outhaul is pulling down, not pulling out.
@sailingmadness
@sailingmadness 5 месяцев назад
Thank you. I was never sure about the kicker tension. I assume it’s the same when furling? 👍

@@sailingmadness furling in you will keep the boom horisontal, to allow the mast leech to roll in evenly top to bottom. Keep the out haul quite slack, do not pull the tack corner down, that will make an un-even roll. I personally prefer to sail wihout bimini ( and even the spray hood) so i can keep a good aye on the sails from the cockpit. Our boat is identical to yours, new sails, roller main with vertical battens, so imporant with an even furl, and the batten parallell to the mast so it goes into the slot simultaniosly top to bottom.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, that was really helpful. I agree with your comments about the spray hood. Now it’s getting g warmer I will be doing the same. 👍👍

We've all messed up mooring - no harm, no foul!! Have you considered using just a single line from the midships cleat for the initial moor? I Had to do some single handed stuff over the last few days and found that it worked well - With your finger pontoon, a bowline / permanent loop long enough to be dropped over the end cleat near your stern whilst your bow is in roughly the right position should be ok. Just drop it on via a boat hook from your cockpit as soon as you can, then leave the boat in dead slow ahead , wheel turning the bow to starboard and she will stay there comfortably whilst you then get stern and bow lines on. I also use a similar approach when mooring with a single crew member - slightly different approach though - crew gets off and makes fast on a cleat in the middle of the space so i'm moored by a line about a foot long. Boat can't go far in that case and i can take the engine out of gear, just leave in tickover. Crew on the pontoon then hands up the permanent lines and can turn the engine off.

Not a sailor but am a mountain leader and climbing instructor, and over the years I have had to make that call you made to turn back, both on solo trips or while leading a group. It is never easy, especially as ego and self belief are often strong internal voices, although I like to think with age I have got more confident in making the call. Pleased you showed it and with the reasoning you gave - would others have said you should just push through? I am sure they would but at that moment, in that situation, the decision was only yours to make and so therefore you made the correct call with the information you had.

Nothing worse than trying to sleep on a boat that's rolling like a 2CV on a twisty bumpy road and having to wedge oneself into the bunk. Had many a sleepless night on the old Swansea - Cork ferry, the single cabins were either up in the bow, quiet but moved a lot or near the engine room, didn't move as much but noisy. The same on most ferries that I spent a night or longer on, tight fisted boss who liked to keep the vehicle mileage down.

Good vid of sensible, seaman like choices being made. Out of interest, what’s your technique for anchoring when you’re on your own?

Hi Dave, good video. How did the starlink work at anchor? And where's your sailing buddy.
@sailingmadness
@sailingmadness 5 месяцев назад
Hi Dave. Starlink worked really well despite the movement from the swell. Was getting a constant 120-150mbps download. Robin will be back very soon, with an update in where he's been. 👍

Love the videos, looking to get Starlink and just wondering what bracket you used to attach it to the rails
@sailingmadness
@sailingmadness 5 месяцев назад
Hi Dicky. The bracket came from Germany as I couldn’t find anything suitable in the UK and I didn’t want to use a fishing rod holder which some were recommending. Very impressed with the quality of the bracket. Here is the link…. outmar.com/en/starlink-om-h-rail-mount-fitting-for-horizontal-tubes-pushpits

Hi David, I was also going down the fishing rod holder route but was unsure about it. This is an excellent solution. Thank you@@sailingmadness

Shame about the circumnavigation, but you proved the value of good passage planning, in that you didnt over focus on charging forward, you allowed yourself to consider alternative locations, which do indeed include turning back. No harm done with the berthing, we've all had that one time when the conditions run perfectly until the last metre or two. It happens, no dramas, a quick reset and it came good 👍
