You remind me of the time my father was building our cottage. Living in a tent, then all in one room. All we had was an old fashioned ice box, kerosene lamp and Coleman hand pump kerosene stove.

Seams in your sheathing should break on the 2x4's with very small gaps. Visqueen is used over insulation without the paper vapor barrier. If the plastic is temporary to keep the insulation in place until you take it down to get the drywall up you might get away with it. Building is a big job so keep working at it. I'm a retired contractor and have been building since I could pick up a hammer so don't get upset when I mention things that would make the job better. You have a beautiful family that deserve the best place you can make for them.

One task to do over winter is to figure out what trees you want to add to the property from fruit to high value trees for the area. A nursery near the house will let you get small bare root saplings and care for them for a few years till they get large enough to transplant to the final locations. In 5-10 years you will be very happy you got the fruit trees started so soon or kicking yourself for not getting them started asap.

Not sure if it was mentioned but when cutting the house wrap cut in a X and fold the Top and 2 Sides in. This covers up the cracks where pieces of OSB join and and helps with keeping water, snow, wind and small bugs from getting in. Also with the outlets, I was pretty sure the code stated that if the wall was 6' or more a plug needed to be installed for living spaces. Love what you did with the plumbing vent stacks. Great idea and might do that with a house we are remodeling in Virginia. Making great progress and the house looks amazing.

The Y-T's are turned the wrong way, I do believe from my time in the trade. It is a vent you do not want water from vent back flowing down your sewer lines. Hey it is looking great. I would havewaterproofEd the craw space walls and put perimeter drains in while connecting the downspouts to it to carry the roof water ,away from the foundation, just extra protection. That is awesome that your children. Are part of the build as they are learning valuable lessons . Good luck and be safe. May the Lord continue o bless you all.

Plastic vapor barrier over the paper vapor barrier on the insulation may cause a problem. See what an insulation contractor says. You should buy insulation without a vapor barrier if you plan on continuing with the plastic. Get some smoke and carbon monoxide detectors! Nice work.

Nice job. I just have one some advise on the insulation of your loft area. If you intend to live in there temporarily without covering the insulation with a finish surface. You may cause sweat to build up behind the insulation creating serious moisture and eventually dangerous mold growth. I had this occur to me during a build. Hope you all do well.

@delmasparker5184
@delmasparker5184 4 года назад
I still don't think it will work. You say you are heating with propane. It produces water. Plus you don't have the floor insulated and warm and cold air will clash creating a rain forest effect. I hope I'm wrong. But my experience shows otherwise. I wish the best for you. Love your family. What a great example. 🙏🙏
@delmasparker5184
@delmasparker5184 4 года назад
I would finish that room ASAP. Your propane heat will produce a lot of water. Clashing with the cold air from the sub floor and venting in the ceiling space. A recipe for mold build up. I don't believe the tape will be sufficient. Best wishes. I hope I'm wrong. Great family. 🙏🙏🙏
@ModernMountainLiving

I love the Built ins Idea. You are dead on with the plastic to keep the fiberglass off of you, especially with all that air movement. I know this is a temp setup (and I am glad to see ya'll out of the wind and wet) but if the entire envelope is not insulated you will get condensation on the back of those pony walls insulation. Is Kim your window contact?

Just found your channel and have been binge watching most of the day ,lol . Great job . One thing about the wiring of outlets , be sure to check and follow your local codes even if you are outside of the inspection jurisdiction. It really makes a difference in the event of a fire for insurance and also the value of the home if you ever decide to sell . Most codes require an outlet spaced a minimum distance apart

Why not take the vent pipe out the upper area of the back wall instead of another hole in the roof to seal. Doors and windows installed downstairs below the loft would ensure that heat would not escape Or you could cover them with plastic to keep heat inside that end of the house.

Martin Johnson - Off Grid Living I agree with kel Davy. Vent out the gable end and turn up above roof. That’s one less possible roof leak. Especially for people that use close cell foam in the attic under the roof sheathing. That foam will not let water thru it so if you had a leak you may not find out until roof shearing and trusses in that location rotted or produced mold. You are in the woods lol The bears and other wildlife aren’t going to think it’s a eye sore

Are you going to store water inside for this winter? Once the tin, windows and woodstove are installed the stress of beating winter should be relieved and you can work inside with little stress.

You probably know but , be careful with the vent free heater as far as oxygen depletion goes. I don't think its big enough to take out the oxygen while you sleep, but for every 100,000 btu's of combustion you will get a gallon of water as a product of combustion. You may note it being humid when the heater is running.

Big no no, at 10:39 it looks like you cut a channel through three studs to run the wire under the window. The building inspector will not pass that as you took all of the strength out of those studs... always drill in the center of a 2x4 or go up and over or down and under to get around hard areas.
@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving
@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving 4 года назад
It won’t take all the strength. It is not a baring wall. It is a 2x6 and there is no building inspection.
