This camera has completely changed my approach and interest in photography. I haven't taken my OM-1 out in a couple of months, never mind telephoto lenses. I don't think I take good photographs with it yet, it requires a totally different way of seeing compared to my familiar competence with wildlife and landscapes, but I find it so much more exciting. It feels 'true to myself' and how I see the world, where wildlife/BIF can feel more like a technical exercise. Maybe most significantly, I no longer care about the reaction to my photos. I share very few, I'm not looking for crowd pleasers, I just have fun capturing what is beautiful to me.

Nice video. Looks like a great little camera for street photography, providing there is no rain/wet snow. A little pricey for a compact non-weather sealed, fixed lens camera but it will be a wonderful tool for those who photograph people candidly. Cheers.

Thank you Peter for another excellent video! I have been using the GRIIIx as my light travel camera for the past year. I pair it with the Olympus TG-6 which is not nearly as fast or sharp but does compliment the GRIIIx by its weather sealing and modest zoom lens. What is really great is that both cameras use the same battery! That greatly simplifies carrying spare batteries and a charger on extended trips when you really have to travel light.

Thank you for this video. I just purchased a Ricoh GRiiiX. I’m trying to overcome the shortcomings you mentioned. For me the lack of VF is a problem. I opted for the X as the iii focal length of 28mm is too wide. 40mm is a more comfortable focal length for me. I like the quick start up time. I like the high contrast B&W jpegs. Of course a major draw is the size and weight. The lens is very sharp. Snap focus takes some getting used to. Glad the body has a touch screen so I have it set up for touch to focus and then take the picture. It is hard to believe Ricoh has squeezed in an IBIS into the body. Kudos. I don’t know if I like the GRiiiX. I’m giving it a try and hoping to like it. One good thing about the GRiii & X is the price hasn’t gone crazy like the X100V. There is a lot to like about this little guy. More will be revealed. A problem I have with this video is you haven’t spent a lot of time with this body yet. I’d be curious to hear how you are using and enjoying your GRiiiX after more use. I’m also curious to hear if you purchase a GRiii. Happy shooting with your new camera and have a happy & healthy New Year. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

I thought that the lack of EVF would be really bad. It has changed my way of photographing. I have managed to use it slight different way than other cameras. I was thinking of getting an external evf for it. I have not yet, those are really expensive for they are. I know that I have only used it for a short time. I will make more content after I have more experience with the camera.

I have a GR11 &111 (28mm) ...pure street photography with 'sleuth'.... as you say, no one knows you have a camera , more a touristy-approach. The GR gets me into a different frame of mind when shooting . Part of it is due to no EVF, more iPhone-ish,...part of it comes from the Sleuth factor so your opportunity for different type of photo's is increases. Hip shoots, in and out shooting on the sly, one handed snaps with easy to manipulate exposure, live screen etc. Not good nor bad, just different sets of Fun Factors then my OM-D 5 Mark 111 & film OM1 and 2. .. Yet it lacks other fun factors that are unique individually, than my OM-D or Film cameras provide. So a trade-off and I don't use any of the cameras exclusively as it depends on the project I am working on, what I want to shoot, how etc.. Honestly though, it is hard to take a bad shot with a GR? A bit too easy; I find myself being a bit less creative in the process, but the images themselves are creative... if that makes sense. Yes, have that second battery.
@aerialfilm1
@aerialfilm1 8 месяцев назад
Those images are striking. The GR has been on my radar for some time as an option to traveling with just the iPhone as my only camera. A grip and a real shutter button, pocketable along with being inconspicuous looks unbeatable. A year or so ago I never imagined I’d be so tight for space that even a m4/3 camera and a couple lenses would be too much. Times change and I have too. Maybe it’s time to reevaluate.

Thank you Peter, your last remark about 28 is interesting. I have the 28mm version ( 18mm APS-C). It is a fantastic camera... But i am not such a good amateur photographer and I find such wide angle difficult to use. So, I am really considering this X version for its slightly norrower angle. But i guess i should first test this focal more thoroughly using my reflex...

@petegleeson1

I understand what you are saying, but the philosophy of the camera is to keep it small and free of things that could catch getting it out of a pocket. I find it very odd when people view such a unique camera and then say, it would be better if it was like other cameras? It is so small and works so well because of the design decisions. If it is not for you, fair enough. Weather sealing would also be challenging with the lens /shutter design. If it gets too wet put it in a pocket, it is not an OM5 with the 20mm f1.4 pro, even though that is a compact kit, it is huge compared to my Ricoh. Horses for courses

I have owned 4 versions of this camera, from the small sensor days up to the GRIII. I understand the philosophy of the camera, but a camera is a tool, not an ideology or a religion. As such, some users will see room for improvement. It's a great camera now in my opinion, which could be better, but it is getting a little cultish. @@petegleeson1

@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 6 месяцев назад
That is an interesting question. I think both are quite good for street photography. I did like Pen E-P7, when I tested it. It has some good feature like the flip screen which GR3 cameras do not have. E-P7 paired with a Panasonic 20mm pancake lens could make a good competition for Ricoh GR3x. GR3 cameras have some good features for street photographers like snap focus etc. I can also fit Ricoh GR3x in my front pocket of my jeans. So it is small and "invisible". Which one is better comes down to the needs and the type of photography one is doing.

I know English isn’t your first language Peter so forgive me if this is just a translation issue. I wouldn’t call the things “flaws” they are the consequences of design choices which are about having a perfect snap camera that makes excellent images, is a small quick to use package and has no frills that distract from the simplicity of the “tool”. There are some excellent videos where the design team talk about the philosophy. If I want a viewfinder, an articulating screen and weatherproof I take my OM5 and 20mm f1.4 pro, it is a fab camera and better in many situations than the GR which in its turn is a fab camera and better in certain situations and for certain style of shooting. As much as I like my OM5 my GRiii feels like an extension of me and you are in my opinion correct to say it leads to you shooting differently.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 7 месяцев назад
You are right that flaws is a wrong word, too strong. I am quite happy with the camera. The only thing that should be improved is weather sealing. If a camera is meant for street photography it should be weather proof. On the other hand I managed to photograph what I wanted in pouring rain. The camnera ca be handled with one hand so I could have an umbrella in my other hand. That also made be blend in.
@petegleeson1

@@ForsgardPeter I don't think the camera can be made as good as it is and as small as it is and be weathersealed, but on a recent video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lRIiI1t7zEk.htmlsi=XWUTgfatn-tQ7Y0Y Imo San hints there may be a new snap camera coming along so I guess we can all dream. Thanks for sharing. Would I buy a GR IIIx? I have already got the GR III, and it is really unique because of its size, which is the same of the GR IIIx. But when I bought the Fuji X-T10 in 2015 I also got the 27mm Fuji lens, which I am still using on the Fuji X-T30 II. Ok, it is a larger and heavier camera. But with this "pancake" lens it is still pocketable. Plus it is you can get a similar sized 18mm lens for it, so you don't need to carry 2 cameras to cover these focal lengths -- not to mention dozens of other Fuji and non-Fuji lenses (some of them manual and very cheap). It also got an EVF and a tilting screen. All in all a much more versatile solution to consider before investing in a GR IIIx.

No I do not think so. Phones are not ergonomically designed for photography. Maybe if I had an extra grip it could work. That is something I have thought about and might try someday. There is the battery issue. Phone is quite crucial in many other things too, especially when travelling.
@petegleeson1
@petegleeson1 7 месяцев назад
As a GRiii user I would say yes and no, I use a phone with two hands otherwise it flies out of my hand and that need to hold it like that, changes the way you experience photographing. The GRiii fits in my right hand starts extremely quickly at the touch of on button and then shutter button, my front finger is controlling aperture, thumb, exposure compensation all the time the camera is held securely. So I can reach it over a wall or round a corner hold it inches from the ground or over my head. Their is a fluidity in using it and of course the control of the image is more intuitively yours than with a phone. So you could get a grip for your phone and it would perhaps also work one handed and be more discrete, I know one person who never uses his lovely cameras now just his phone. Also personally I like that it is a camera and I am not distracted by notifications when on a photo walk I am in the zone, camera in my hand (in my pocket if the area looks a but dodgy) concentrating on seeing. If I want to make an image the camera is there intuitively and discretely. I think a phone shares the being more in the world aspect (rather than squinting in a viewfinder you are more looking at the world around you and the screen), and it has the discretion of a GR as lots of people walk around holding a phone so people ignore it.

If spending money to buy additional gear changes your photography then you're not much of a photographer. As Peter said previously, you're just a consumer.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 8 месяцев назад
I am not sure if you have actually watched the video or my other videos. This camera gives me new opportunities, like shooting with one hand from the hip. I am also less visible with this camera in my hand. People care a lot less about me photographing. I do get more candid shots where my presence is not interfering with what is happening. Does it automatically mean that I am good in shooting from the hip? No, of course not. My hit rate was not very high even though I got some nice images that I had not been able to get before. I have always said that try first a new style or genre with the existing gear. That is what I have done for a long time. If that is something you like to photograph, then see if there is equipment that might help in that style. That is exactly what I have done. I did shoot this style way back with a small compact film camera. If someone has never done street photography, the right way is to start with the existing gear. After a while and if that new genre is something one likes then it is maybe a time to look for gear that might suit that new genre better.
@petegleeson1
@petegleeson1 8 месяцев назад
Its not the spending the money, its using the camera, it will not make you better necessarily but it will give you a very different approach or it does for me. I use my GRiii one handed quite a bit, I take it places I might not shoot otherwise because it is discrete and can be put in a pocket. Because there is no flip up screen or viewfinder I shoot instinctively with it. It is not better than my M43 gear it is different. It is the camera I own that most “fits me”.

@ForsgardPeter I don't think spending money solves any problem. Peter, you acknowledged that talking about gear vs technique attracts more viewers, so I can see why you're promoting new gear. You mean that video about too many photography gear channels on RU-vid? My point is that no gear will compensate the lack of skills in photography. But then gear can give us opportunities is another thing I have said many times. I got this becouse I want to carry a camera with me more. This fits in even in my jeans front pocket. Thjis camera also gives me the possibility to photograph people candid without need to hide. I can be invisible out in the open. If someone has never photographed street this camera won't help. One needs skills in street photography. Some of those skills has less to do with photography and some a bit more. I have also said that if you want to test a new genre try it with your excisting gear. After a whikle if taht genre seems something one likes then consider getting gear that suits that particular genre better. I am sorry if I have not made myself clear enough. I hope this explanation clears my views a bit.

I wish Ricoh would make a more inspirational shaped camera , they just don't say " pick me up & go shoot " like say Olympus / Fujifilm etc .

I see this differently. I like to pick up Ricoh GR IIIx and go out photograph.

No thanks ! Maybe weather sealing and 40 megapixel so that I can crop. That’s about it. We could also have a mono one, now then Ricoh.

Are you a student of irony? It’s only three days since you produced a video asking why so much gear talk…

Not really. I did say that I will be making those videos too, but less than usual. This was also more about haw a camera can change the way I photograph rather than the specs.

On the positive side I do agree that an unobtrusive point and shoot can change one’s photography. I’ve changed mine by carrying the tg-6.

Way over priced for what it is, a fragile dust monster

I do not think it is that much over-priced. There is a high demand for this camera. If something has high demand it is not over-price. I agree that it is a lot money, but it has a lot of good features for street photographers. Those features actually help a lot. Have not really has any issues with the dust problem yet. I have had in my pocket all the time since I got it. Time will tell how much that will be an issue.
