Been a sound engineer for years. There is definitely not 5x the performance for a podcast/spoken audio. If you’re on a budget, don’t break yourself feeling like you have to have the SM7B to “make it.” You need good quality audio. The small edge the 7B gives you, isn’t that extra quality you need. Work on your diction and mic placement. Those two things will improve your quality more than anything. Also don’t forget EQ or other tools your audio board/etc might have that can polish your voice.

The SM57 sounds great, in fact it’s a cleaner sound than the SM7B. $400 for a muddy sounding mic?

Great video Thank you

One thing to consider is that the capsule in the SM7B sits about 3 inches further back than the SM57 so to get a proper test done you have to compensate for that with your distance from the mic.

Good video. Sound on both mics is excellent. What are you plugging the mics into?

The 57 is almost the same, except the siblants, which are a bit harsher than the sm7b. not sure if it's worth the price difference.

You don't need a cloud lifter, you need a better sound card that has enough clean gain for the SM7b. MOTU, Presonus XMAX or Revelator, Steinberg, Lewitt, Focusrite Vocaster, Solid State Logic, Universal Audio, Apogee, and RME audio interfaces have good preamps.

The SM7B sounds better but is it worth 5x the price? Probably but it all depends on the person and many other things. Again, it is about the best mic FOR YOU, not the best mic.

If youre not in professional music or radio. The difference is marginal and you can literally EQ the sm57 to sound 98% similar to the sm7b with just one high and low peak filter

@@urbnctrl Great point, not to mention most people listen to podcasts over airpods or in the car/from a phone speaker. Unless someone's sitting down with studio monitors or high quality headphones they most likely wouldn't even be able to tell the difference.

And if you use these EQ filters ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s372qfTc3-I.html (sorry for posting this in your comment section but it's a really good video that might help alot of people and is a good follow up to yours) and the A2WS, A81WS and even the RK 345 windscreen or you can get really close to the SM7B sound for cheap as well. In addition with the windscreen, using the mic off axis will mitigate some of the plosives. After doing that, the SM7B does not have (if it ever did) 400-1000 (if you count the cloudlifter and good interface) dollars sound difference. Alot of people should follow trends(everyone uses the SM7B nowadays) instead of being smart about things. The extra money could be spent on the thing that makes the most difference in their sound, music, mixing, mastering, etc : acoustic treatment.

I like the SM57 clarity better. I mean, the POTUS uses it. lol

It's only worth 5 times the price if you're well off and 5 times the price is peanuts to you. If, on the other hand, 400$ is a significant amount of money to you, then it's not worth especially when you have the Rode Procaster which sounds as good (and even better in some situations) for half the price.

To clarify, yes all mics need a preamp to make sound. However, you do not need a mic activator/booster, as the preamp in most interfaces is plenty for a 57.
