It makes NO SENSE! The speakers you never knew Philips made!

Honestly I had no idea that Philips made ribbon tweeter speakers, it seems the stuff of higher end manufacturers. These are surprisingly heavy as well, I read that they are made from real rosewood. This makes NO SENSE, its Philips! Its like Amstrad not using chipboard, it does not compute!
The amplifier is another story, cheap and nasty. But lets face it, it does the job. At the heart of a PA system or pumping out tunes in a Gym you probably cant go wrong.

I'd rather have something like this instead of a soundbar. I like the separation that a soundbar in the same price range probably won't accomplish.

Never heard a soundbar with even remotely the imaging and soundstage these have, they`re really quite good if you`re using a decent amp (:

I recently picked up a Panasonic mini disc CD player mini system for £25 and it absolutely blows me away how it sounds. We've definitely become accustomed to mediocreness over the years.

@@backofficeshow yep. MP3's were really cool and I still use them but they can't beat the sound of vinyl or a CD.

@@aurthorthing7403 Of course, vinyl has charm, CD is precise, mp3 is compressed, BUT.. You can fit a LOT of music on limited media (such as minidisc) and in some cases, like when listening to music mixed to 1dB, dance and trance especially, it can actually make it sound louder, which is kind of what you want with certain types of music. Btw, these speakers can be driven with a Nobsound 25+25W and a 4 cell lithium battery, call it 75 dollars total, and it`s actually pretty good, a little climp and a clamp and you have a kickass boombox ;) (I got complaints running these with that little amp)

These are real Philips products, from before they sold their audiovisual department. The speakers really are pretty decent, but the sets they belonged to weren’t.

I remember I had a mini Philips CD player radio system with a couple of little crappy speakers. I wanted to test an amp so borrowed them. I could not believe how good they sounded on the "real" amp despite being nasty chipboard jobs. A lot of consumer electronics must have been using some real crappy amplifiers

Philips made very good audio products in the mid 2000s, one of these the home theater model MX 5800SA, It had an SACD player, front towers made of aluminum, ribbon tweeters, the main unit was designed based on two vintage Philips models.

Interesting speakers. fixing your Denon volume control is really easy. just clean out the digital encoder. They fill them with grease to make them turn smoothly but the grease melts with the heat, coats the contacts and the microcontroller can't tell what the encoder is doing.

Is there enough room to wiggle in the tube from a can of WD40 contact cleaner?

oh i have a pair of those. they're probably the best thrift store speakers i've ever picked up honestly, quite adequate

The actual/historical Philips company has sold most of the consumer electronics business and branding (the remains mainly do health solution govt contract stuff) so who knows who actually made these.

That's an interesting point, I suppose I might trawl the internet looking for when this system was actual available

@@backofficeshow I bought a set from a supermarket around 2007ish. I think it was released not much earlier. The system is still serving daily as computer audio for my relatives but compared to my Dali Spektor 1 and Jbl lsr 305, they sound like a dogs fart tbh 😎

Would have been nice to hear some musical clips with singing than talking through the whole video. Couldn't even tell what they really sounded like.
