Hi all. During the pandemic thought i would just do a couple of videos about my 2017 Honda Africa Twin, which I purchased 2 years ago, used/2nd hand, from my local dealer. I bought the same bike new. It has been perfect. A great all rounder: not the best at anything but good at everything. I really appreciate the simplicity of these earlier models. I don’t need or want modes, DCT, giant top heavy fuel tanks, or other gadgets that just break and you can’t fix them yourself. Off road performance is surprisingly good with the right tires. Passenger comfort is acceptable. All I do is change the oil and filters, add gas. Its a Honda.

I have one and love it. I'm a road rider rather than trail rider. Best thing I have done is putting Bridgestone Battlax Adventure A41 on it. The standard tyre were dangerous when riding spiritly. You could ride off the edge of the front one causing front end trying to tuck. They transformed the bike. I had a fuel exhausts can on mine for a while which I took off to get a price to change the bike and it brought back a load of low down torque and smoothed the engine out quite a bit.

I own a 2017 Africa Twin non DTC. I’ve owned 27 motorcycles and the AT is the best bike I’ve ever owned. It’s the first and only “forever” bike I’ve owned. I just rolled 39,000 miles on it and I’ve yet to check the valves. It’s done the MABDR and most of the NEBDR. It’s my main year-round commuter bike and I’d give up my new Harley Pan America before I gave up this AT.
@UncleWally3
@UncleWally3 3 года назад
Not sure why you’d neglect the first valve check but, regardless, after fifty years and many bikes I’m thinking of buying the Africa Twin. Thing is, I’m not that interested in taking it off tarmac (for that, use an off road/single track bike). However, this leaves me with the question: Do I buy an AT or wait a year and hope Honda produces their much anticipated NC1150X - from what I hear, a road version utilizing the AT platform? Could you be convinced to buy the road version over the “adventure” version?
@zyonsdream
@zyonsdream 3 года назад
@@UncleWally3 I’d get a new Africa twin if i just wanted a touring bike just for the cruise control and modes. The Africa makes a wonderful touring bike. You can see over traffic. Stand when your rear gets tired. Good mileage and it’s wind protection is second to none. As for the valves. They are a serious pain on the AT to do and my repair guy quoted $800 pre pandemic. Then he laughed and said he’d just ride the crap out of it and check it at 80k. He’s the only guy I’d ever trust to work on my stuff and I’ve owned many Honda’s and I’ve never had one that needed an adjustment other than my 450RL.
@UncleWally3
@UncleWally3 3 года назад
@@zyonsdream. Yep, one of my favorite bikes, and I still own one, is Honda’s VFR 800. While I absolutely love the bike, it’s hard to find a more expensive and ridiculous valve adjustment. The last time I checked them it cost over $1000cdn - and they were pretty much spot on. That said, I wouldn’t miss the first adjustment but wish I had the superpower to know it didn’t need the second and third check. There’s got to be a better way: Enter Harley-Davidson’s Pan American . . .
@zyonsdream
@zyonsdream 3 года назад
@@UncleWally3 I got a Pan Am Special just over a month ago. I traded in my CB1000R for it. My Africa Twin is a forever bike for me but I wanted a more powerful capable touring machine and I like/need the upright touring ergos of an ADV bike. Plus I’ve owned many HD in the past and wanted to throw my support behind this new path they are going down. That being said, I’m very happy I still have my Africa Twin and I intend to keep it for off road duties and daily commuting.

@@gsd32i I think DCT is one of those technologies, that you didn't know you needed. Want to concentrate on the ride and forget about gears/clutch/rpms? You can do it. I just bought a 2017 Africa Twin with only 1700 miles for my first bike 2 weekends ago. Came with Tusk aluminum saddleboxes, givi 15l tank bag, full givi crash bars. I put on doubletake adventure mirrors with extensions, tank grip pads, Barkbuster VPS handguards, camel adv camel toe kickstand and windscreen brace, centerstand, ims adv 2 footpegs, xgrip ram mount, fastway billet cargo rack. I have an altrider skidpIate in the garage waiting to be installed. I was planning on the F850gs until I was able to mount and compare the 2. The BMW was way more top heavy. Bought some Alpinestars boots and their v3 drystar honda jacket. Bought a cheapo Yema helmet from Amazon but now looking at an Arai XD4.

Good all round summation of the bike. If you allow me I can pass on my 5 years 137,000 klm, 63 country experience with our 16 std. Essentially what I think I can add is the issues to look out for. First let me say, there aren't many, but like all bikes there are some. You've already mentioned the rusting spokes. The front end is cheap and will wear internally in the upper part of the stancion, right where the lower tripple clamp grips. (They all do it after as little at 10-15,000 klms) Some have speculated that this clamp is done up too tight, causing a slight crush and hence wear. I've replaced my front end with an Ohlins unit. Far superior in every respect. The rear Showa is a better spec unit, but will benefit from respringing and valving to your weight and riding style. Ours has been trouble free after it went to a local Tech for the rework. Watch your front disc's for excessive wear on the bobbins, a common fault. Whilst there, keep an eye on your spoke tension. A lot of bikes have early rear right wheel bearing failures. As low as 25,000 klms. But this is mostly prevelent on bikes that get ridden hard over rough ground or heavily loaded. I Have done a conversion to a 4204 dbl row ball bearing instead of the original 6204. Now I change at 50,000 klms with confidence of no early failure. A lot of early bikes had water pump failures. This is identified with a slight coolant leak at the pump. There is a weep hole to atmosphere and the leak will be seen here. Touch wood I've been OK until now. Hmm, what else. Oh unlike you, we both hated the seat. To stay married that has been replaced with a local custom made one here in Aus. far superior thats for sure. I'm perfectly happy with tubes, so no issues that department from me so far as tubeless rims go. Oh, I've only had to make minor adjustments to both the inboard exh valves. Simple enough process, seeing at they are old school screw and locknut. (Inlets are shims). Whilst your in there fit a set of Iridium plugs. Good for 100,000 klms and saves the fiddly hassle of chaging more regularly. I've found that this bike likes a slack chain. Don't be tempted to over tighten. if you do, you just find that you have to regularly retension. I go for about 40 ml total"up & down" slack. Hmm, thats about all I can think of. If you are at all interested you can read more here. advrider.com/f/threads/rtw-on-a-h-a-t-in-the-slow-lane.1172713/

Hi, thanks for the vid. I keep on thinking about buying one. It' s interesting you're a sports bike rider. So many talk about the AT's mushy suspension/handling on the tarmac but you don't mention it. Would that be cos there's not much in it and that some are just being super picky? Cheers.

Hi . I did a video of putting a stiffer spring on the rear, as 2 up it was definitely soft . I am a lightweight at 12.5 stone. It’s no sports bike but at my age I really can’t be bothered with all that . As they say , it is what it is. I’ve tweaked the front suspension so it doesn’t dive too much and now with the stiffer rear spring the bike handles pretty well for a “penny farthing” as my mate calls it . It has character and I prefer it to a BMW. For fun I have a KTM890R Duke which is simply mental . Go and try one👍

Thanks for the vid, I'm really struggling with this very issue. I have only had smaller bikes, currently ride a 250 dual sport and I am really concerned about the weight of this bike off road mostly. I was thinking about the DCT for ease of use in off road difficult terrain. I'm only 5'8"/160.

Hi . I’m not really an off road kind of guy at all. Mostly fast sports bikes with loads of track days . Nearest off roading for me is a gravel driveway ! I’ve put a better spring on the rear and the bike is now taller , so on tip toes , 5’9”. Before it was fine . It is a heavy bike though . I have binned mine playing about on off road stuff once ! I’ve done the Honda off road 2 day course in the UK last year using their own new AT’s and they were bloody amazing . We thrashed the bikes off road ( limited skill set by me ) through private forest’s and fast road stuff . This was on the standard model small screen etc. These new bikes have lower seat height and for me I loved it . It’s a shame they only do this version on tubed tyres with no option for tubeless as they would sell a lot more of them . If I had the budget I would get one of those . BUT I do just love my tri colour AT ….. haven’t used dct so can’t comment . Oh I binned their bike too !! Can’t do ruts! I guess if you ride with mates then they can help you pick the thing up ! But if on your own …..mmmm not sure 🤔 must say when me and my friend went to the off road school he was on his Honda 250 crf250L and except for the bigger roads to get to the centre it was an impressive bike . The centre had a Honda cb500x with suitably equipped tyres for a bloke who was vertically challenged and that went really well . Surprised us all on our new AT’s. He had dropped the centres AT at least 10 times before he realised it was too tall for him !! We did chuckle like school kids sadly each time !!! Good luck

Just a reminder that the Africa Twin 1000cc and 1100cc is tuned for a lower power output in order to run on lower grade unleaded fuel for when you end up on a round the world trip unable to get premium unleaded. Same like the old Africa Twin 750 I had that could literally run on a bottle of whiskey, rum or whatever you could throw at it to make it to the next fuel stop. There is a reason for the Africa in the name, to deal with so-called 3rd world African problems. Of course don't try that with your new AT. 🙂 Otherwise, Honda has no problem making a more powerful engine than most of the powerhouses out there.

I did what they called the self improver route, where I did it in modules over a number of years, both the ground school study and flight exams.It was a 2nd career for me, so I was working full-time and studying. My first flying job was with a small corporate outfit flying cessna citation jets and cessna 310/404 piston aircraft. I then went to the now defunct BMI/British Midland at London Heathrow......then along came the twin towers of 9/11, where a significant number of pilots were made redundant in the UK. Didn't fly for over a year as there were no jobs. Then flew for a British Airways franchise Operator called GB Airways from Heathrow and London Gatwick. Am Currently with a large european airline. These days In the UK/Europe basically you go to commercial flight school for some 12 months(£100,000 +)But with Covid, my industry has been battered. So far this year I have flown 5 times!!!! To remain current we have to do simulator check rides every 6 months BUT with lack of flying we have the additional requirement of another sim ride every 90 days. Can't wait to get back to the good old normal days of moaning that I am too busy!!! Currently flying airbus A319-20-21.....stay safe.

Just asking, if the silencer is made perfectly horizontal (can it be made like that?🙂), will it increase the mileage?☺️

Hi . Yes I have but only a few times . I have had a look on the internet based on your comment and it’s a known issue with the start stop switch . People say it’s a simple fix of taking the switch apart and using electrical grease . Something to do with the carbon bits floating about and causing the stalling of the engine when you release the switch. Guess I may see if it is a 10 minute job as some folk say . This is what mine does infrequently though . I copied the link it’s not my video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yx_kz7pt254.html

@@gsd32i thanks, watched your video. Ile try that electric grease didn't mind it happened the odd time but happening all the time now think I left to much water get in when washing could have caused the carbon buildup. All I no is its inbarsing in public when it won't stert
