I love at 00:58 how she adds "so I'll sing this song from Ruddigore" x) When I saw this live in Sydney a few years ago at this point in the subtitle screen they gave up and wrote something like "Too much information, just enjoy the music!", which gained a huge laugh from the audience
The missing lyric: "So we'll sing this song from Ruddigore" which is another opera by Sir Arthur Sullivan but wait, I see others have already pointed this out so, I guess it really doesn't matter, matter, matter, matter!
I first saw him in the original production of the Cy Coleman/Comden & Green musical On the Twentieth Century, and later in the first production of this Pirates in Central Park. His gift for physical comedy was astounding.
From start to finish, he chewed the scenery like Cookie Monster eating cookies. I had a hard time paying attention to anyone else because he is so over the top. Same with the theatre version of this.
The film doesn't even try to pretend this song is originally in Pirates. The lyrics literally go "so I'll sing this song from Ruddigore it really doesn't matter". They acknowledge the source and I think it's hilarious they put it in, whether you think they've sped it up or not. Totally cool.
I think this song and lyric is in the original score isnt it? Wasn't it G&S that threw in the random song from Ruddigore not the film makers a hundred years later. I think
When I was a kid, I was asked what song I'd want to be played at my wedding. I chose this one (based on it's first line), which probably explains why I never got married.
Bfdidc I grew up on this movie! I used to practice jumping shrubs with my sister while singing With Cat Like Tread. Doing the Kevin Kline squat with one leg crossed from A pardox, which I'm convinced only he can do. I grew up wanting my grandpa, who is a WWII vet a master sergeant, tellimg him I would not get married unlesshe sang the Major General tune. He's an amazing singer, I was like Grandpa! You got this! Repeat, I am the very model of- and he'd go an eye twitch followed by a glare and refused to sing it as he felt it was a misrepresentation for him to call himself a major general. I'd pout, beg, try to cute my way in to making him agree. Every time, he'd shut it down before it began. So I got mad and in a childish out burst I yelled at my grandpa "Fine! I'm never getting married!" He's in his 90's now, is blind, and is selectivity deaf. Iam glad I backed down on that dream as I don't need my grandpa beating the wedding guest with an umbrella. I am not married either. But I had my grandparents as a gold standard of what a marriage should be. My parents are divorced, that was ugly. My sisters are divorced, that got really messy. Now I just tell people I never got married to skip my first divorce. Mad respect that you wanted a song from this play/film at your wedding when you grew up. I feel ya'!
when they put this on broadway in teh 80's again kline was doing the same role and yes he did the song without a hitch the entire time everytime. such awesomeness when i was little this was the only musical i liked and enjoyed.
The line "I'll sing a song from Ruddigore it really doesn't matter" is referring to the far more obscure play of that name, also by Gilbert & Sullivan.
This song was actually from "Ruddigore", and it was borrowed for this movie since they weren't making a movie of Ruddigore. Oh, you kids really need to start familiarizing yourselves with other Gilbert & Sullivan stories. This one was easy. Now let's see you sink your teeth into The Mikado, Ruddigore, Iolanthe, Trial by Jury...any of the rest.
Also, besides the reference to Ruddigore is the visual reference in this movie to H.M.S. Pinafore on the theatre marquee, and in the Major General's song.
This version definitely sounds time compressed. Yes I KNOW it's a fast and challenging song to sing, but I also know the sound/timbre of each of these performers voices, and they, especially Kevin Klein, are not that high/treble in pitch. One might go so far as to say that Gilbert & Sullivan, and not Lin Manuel Miranda, composed the first musical raps for stage presentation.
for me this is the best musical ive ever saw even when i was a kid i didnt care for alot of the musicals all except for this one. it has ageless songs in it though and the idea behind it is genius
@ Oyiket - yeah "Matter" was from the G+S Musical Ruddigore, which was "borrowed" for this film. And It is where "The speed test" was born for millie! :)
at 1:01 ruth says "so ill sing this song from ruddigore, it really dousent matter" most G&S plays have to make a referance to one or another, (its even scripted into the major generals song (and whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore)) i liked it
This song was added to the Joseph Papp 1980 stage version--from Ruddigore. they also added a song, Sorry her Lot from Pinafore for Ronstadt, but that was cut from this film adaptation
I don't think W S would mind much ...there is a lot of cross-referencing of music in their other works and he/they wrote at a time when liberties were regularly taken in Opera e.g. "The Last Rose of Summer" in the lesson scene in The Barber of Seville etc As Ruddigore is less often heard than Pirates I think that it is good to have this chance to air one of its best numbers.
I love when she says "I'll sing this song from Ruddigore, it really doesn't matter!" HA so true! *happens to be in Ruddigore at the moment* Kevin Kline = amazing.
Well he didnt take a breath in his entire segment :P (as far as i heard)i think he did very well to get through it. *Kevin Kline and Johnny Depp are the 2 best pirates EVAR!!! not sure which i prefer though :(*
Uh, no. The Speed Test is actually this song rewritten. Granted, this was rewritten a bit too to make up for the fact that it was stuck into the wrong G&S operetta (which is actually pretty clever) but it's still a Gilbert and Sullivan original.
in the live version of this i saw ruth goes 'but my opinion doesnt matter' and fred and the pirate king all sing 'no her opinion doesn't matter!' XD it was pretty funny
Note to the New York State Board of Regents: Please make the proficient articulation and flawless singing of this song required to pass the New York State Teacher's Certification Exams. That should eliminate most of the bad apples. Also, BTW, lose the fucking 10 hour class observation per course requirement. I do not need to be tormented further by bad teachers!!!
@AustinAdunNabi I assume you mean why is this song from Ruddigore in Pirates. Honestly, dear old G & S weren't above reusing snippets from their previous works. One can hardly blame them, being as prolific as they were, for indulging in a little self reference. A hilarious tune either way and worth checking out the version of Ruddigore with Vincent Price as Despard.
i dont know, i'm just repeating comments i've seen before to try and seem smart because i'm insecure and i'm using the internet to try and gain confidence in myself
hey hey there, i know i havent spoke in a while so im leavin a comment or 2 for every vid you have, i enjoyed singin to this is fun, it was really hard to do! lol x x
I never noticed that she said 'I'll sing this song from Ruddigore'. Although I only saw this film twice, and back then I didn't know this song was stolen from Ruddigore.
0:46: "If this were not a little mad and generally silly...", not "If there's one other little matter generally silly...". The former makes sense and matches phonetically; the latter, not so much. Also it's much closer to the lyrics of the Ruddigore version - "If /I/ were not a little mad and generally silly...".
@jraduta I don't see any resemblance. That's a dark, guitar heavy, sad/angry/happy piece about killing Captain Hammer, while this is a cheerful bit of patter taken from a different musical.
