No its not. Sports and Music is different. Music is more tied to culture. Can a non spanish person be king of salsa. Can a non african be king of afro beats. Can a non jamaican be a real king of reggae. Sport is something you play and a universal language. Music not so much, Other races might like the beat but overall most of them really dont get it

Yes, he is protecting the brand and the culture. EM is great but lets not lose sight of Busta, Biggie, Tupac, Drake, 3000, Jay z, Naz. M was more pop that actual rap if you pay attention to his records. EM is rap/hiphop/pop! Biggie would eat EM alive and so would Pac, Busta and a few others. EM is top 10 somewhere but he wouldnt last with Biggie or Pac or Busta and we can test that theory today . Busta made a challenge that he would take on anyone in a rap battle on versus to include EM and no one wanted that smoke

Basketball is a bad parallel because it's purely skilled based. Rap is also a culture. Someone not of that culture will never seem like the best to those that are a part of it.
