It's a Dinner Party for Ravens and Wolves!

Why do wolves tolerate ravens as dinner companions? Could it be that wolves and ravens are hunting partners who share the spoils?
Research by Bernd Heinrich of the University of Vermont demonstrates that ravens and wolves are close collaborators. In fact, his research from Yellowstone Nation Park revealed that during the winter season ravens were located near wolves up to 99.7% of the time! Moreover, at wolf kills, an average of 30 ravens would be present and over 100 have been recorded to share the leftovers. So, wolves do a great job of keeping ravens fed. But what do wolves get out of the relationship?
Heinrich notes instances in Yellowstone in which ravens helped wolves find their next meal by using their raucous calls to alert wolves of nearby injured animals, like elk. Ravens find the prey, ravens alert the wolves, and the iconic predators go in for the easy kill. Both wolves and ravens are rewarded with a meal for their team effort.
As for the dinner host, this Mexican gray wolf represents the Wolf Conservation Center's active participation to save a species from the brink of extinction.
The WCC, a 501c3 non-profit organization in South Salem, NY, is one of a network of facilities participating in the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan - a bi-national initiative whose primary purpose is to support the reestablishment of Mexican gray wolves in the wild through captive breeding, public education, and research.

I feed a pair of large ravens where I live. I call out "treats!" and within mins, there they are. It has been several months of feeding them. They come closer each time. Twice they have flown by me as I drove my car down the street. I feel quite honored to be able to give them a little snack, and they in turn "talk" to me and perch close by. Seeing them with my favorite animals, the wolves, was wonderful. I will keep contributing to the Center every month. Thank you for #standingwithwolves!

It is interesting to learn about the symbiotic relationship between the Wolf and the Raven. In ancient times both the Wolf and the Raven were worshipped as Holy animals across many different cultures. . . Even our Stone Age ancestors knew they were special animals

I have Ravens at my place, two to which I call Huginn and Muninn. Recently, I saw one of them pluck ripe apples from a tree that’s long lost this year’s leaves, and place it in an open field. At the same time a white tail buck that’d just sprouted his first prongs had been eating apples that had fallen under the tree. When the Deer noticed the Bird had left a perfectly good apple in the clearing, the Deer left the safety of the apple tree, and slowly jaunted into the clearing to eat the apple. Now there’s been Coyotes in that same clearing, and I know the Ravens are aware of the Coyotes, because they have a distinct squak for the Coyotes. My theory is that Ravens Lure unsuspecting animal into the line of predator animals, so the prey can be attacked and the Ravens get to feed off the remains...

These lovely, ESSENTIAL creatures have always found me in the wild since I was an extremely young teen (so I gotta lotta years under my belt😂). But only when I’m alone, not with anyone else except for once. I was on my Native American friend’s honorary reservation (same tribe but different res) & Chief saw how the animals were with me, especially the wild wolves around me at night (again, only 1 ever approached at a time there to start and at ANY time they were never aggressive) & ravens in the day (& others but these two particularly flocked to me which Chief found very interesting). After talking to me about this, its meanings in his culture (not seen looking at me but I do have Native American in my bloodline; a decent dose but the rest of my background is more how I look), and about me and gifts I have, he blessed me with an honorary Native American name and granted me access to his reservation even after my friend left to go back home where we are originally from up North🇺🇸. This is a tremendous honor in every way. When I’m down, feeling low, I know exactly where I can go and THESE wolves only, will now come to me as a pack after years of individually. In the rest of the world, they continue to find me, day or night, as long as I’m alone, one at a time. I don’t mean they wait in line, I just mean random wild wolves and ravens come to me and are very sweet. I let them take the lead & don’t sit & pet etc (can’t help it if ravens want to perch on shoulder or play with earrings etc; or steal them😂) because I don’t want the wild to be use to ppl. Generally, ppl are bad to them. I don’t stand rigid bc I’m not afraid- that’s never the energy in these 100s (prob close to 1K by now at least) of encounters. They’re relaxed so I’m relaxed and now that Chief has told me what he has and believes (can’t share, sorry; their ways I honor and are sacred to them), I simply bask in the visit, including what I believe was one Dire Wolf (supposedly extinct but after this I TOTALLY disagree). This white wolf that came to me while I was in Canada was not an inch shorter than those FX Twilight wolves. Yes, at first I was overwhelmed & my heart skipped a beat for the first time. I’m use to large animals as a professional equestrian (riding since age 3- LONG time), and use to wolves but add the massive stature and I couldn’t explain it. This was before Twilight saga came out so imagine my surprise at seeing them standing near ppl in the movies. That’s what it looked like for me. I told Chief years later and he had answers which I say are more theories but the take away for me was that, while every single encounter, wild or preserve, is meaningful; special, in the case of the Dire and ALL wildlife that comes to me out of nowhere like they’ve known me forever, I continue to feel at home and exponentially blessed. If you read my story, thank you. I know there’s questions in there I just can’t (or am admonished not to & out of respect, won’t) answer. I know tons of you don’t believe me and that’s okay. I have my memories in the past, present and future to come. I focus on that and the positivity they all bring me and wish at LEAST one similar encounter for you so you can take that joy, make it blossom through all aspects of your life, and have your own story to share. There is no negativity here, nor will I react to it should it come. I’ll be in the company of wolves, winking at the moon😉 Thanks again for taking precious time to read through. That is kind of you since you don’t know me. As always, love, light and blessings be bright 🥰🐺🦅🥰🙏🏻 #StandWithWolves ... always

It works partly because wolves wouldnt be able to get a viable meal off eating a raven and the raven doesn't take enough of a wolves prey to threaten the wolves diet. Furthermore ravens can find carrion better than wolves and wolves can break down carrion better than ravens. Its not that incredible
@user-ed5sw9fj4t
@user-ed5sw9fj4t 2 года назад
I wholeheartedly disagree, but I assume you're not factoring in the following information. Ravens can take up to 40% of a carcass and in much less time than a wolf could eat even 10% of it. The ravens don't eat it all right then, they deposit it in a nearby cache that they sometimes share or place close by those of other ravens in their group. Working together, they'd be way too much for a wolf. Also, it's been documented repeatedly that some mother ravens will take their young to visit wolf pups at their den so that they all know they're not enemies. Raven nests and favorite perching areas can also be found close to where wolves make their dens. Ravens guarding a nest or perching near their wolves' den while the other ravens help the mother wolf hunt have been known to drop rocks on the heads of anything getting too close to either one and have divebombed animals that were being aggressive towards wolf pups (even when the pups inadvertently started it). They seem to act as babysitters and the pups' playful nature ensures that they will follow the ravens' lead, be it back to the safety of the den, or to food as if they're training the pups to hunt with them. A mother wolf won't let ANYTHING with a pulse near her pups if she doesn't see it at least as a friendly, albeit fringe, member of the pack. It's possible that these relationships continue over many generations because their lifespans are similar in length. ABSOLUTELY incredible.

drake hart That’s 100% Mexican Gray Wolf and in my vast experience with wolves, wild & ambassadors at preserves, to me, coyotes look greatly different. In case you missed it, this sweetie is one of the captive born wolves at Wolf Conservation Center (WCC) in NY. The Preserve holds no coyotes. For me, while I can still tell the difference, it’s lobos, pure Red Wolves that come across more coyote like. My comment was said in a tone of respect & not meant to start a debate. I respect your opinion.
