After about 6 weeks, I finally went back to look into the hive that the bees had made emergency cells on to see if I had a laying queen yet, and was I surprised yet again by what the bees showed me. I hope you enjoy the video. By the way, the video links below are for the 3 other videos I made on this hive showing the journey they took me on. God's peace always. Mr. Ed

Hello Jeff, Oh my heart fell when that comb fell out of the frame. And when you were trying to grab the queen, I was yelling at the screen saying: "Put that damn camera down and get her already." I was hoping that colony prospered.

Thanks Mr. Ed for a great follow up to the previous 3 parts of this hive saga. Q: What did you mean when you commented on the "pattern" that the queen was laying? Is there an actual pattern to her laying or did you mean that she was just laying a lot of eggs. Your work with the bees is a blessing to nature!
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 11 месяцев назад
The "pattern" refers to the nearness of capped larva that you can see on the frame. When the brood is side by side, with few holes between the cells, it is a good pattern. And yes, it also refers to how many eggs she is laying as well. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

I have a question: when the bees created a new queen, did she mate with drones that were in the box?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 10 месяцев назад
No, she flies out of the hive to be mated. This is one reason she does not return, she leaves the safety of the hive and runs the risk of being killed outside of the hive. When a new queen spawns in a hive like this can she start laying eggs right away or does she leave the hive to mate and then return?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 11 месяцев назад
After emerging from her cell, the new queen hangs out in the hive for several days, between 3 to 5 days, then, she flies out the hive and is mated. Because she is mated up to 15 times, she may leave the hive one or two more times, but generally it's once. Then, when she returns, a day or two later she begins laying. After her return to the hive she never leaves again...unless in the following spring she leaves with the first swarm. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Jeff I was referring to the big block of beeswax in the beginning of the video being dark. I would have thought the monks would want nice bright yellow beeswax for lip balm etc. Our local bee club had a speaker this week talking about rendering show quality beeswax so bright yellow beeswax is still on my mind. I'm going to be converting my hot box to a wax melter by increasing the temp from 104° to 165°. 👍

@@davidlewis4179It was a VERY old block of wax when I started, full of dirt and debris. I got the block about 13 years ago and it was nasty to begin with, someone did a terrible jog of rendering the wax. The reason for the space was due to the feeder in the hive. If you noticed how tight the fit was to get the final frame in there, that's the reason for the space. It's simply residue and debris from the wax. Each time the wax is rendered, more and more of the impurities are removed leaving that beautiful block of wax. If you'd like to see more wax rendering videos, and I have a bunch of them, go to my channel and look at the playlist about "rendering wax." Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. I'd bet on the replacement queen being from an egg, because in general, the younger they start rearing it as a queen, the better the result - and you couldn't have done any better than that, at least in your climate.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 11 месяцев назад
I would have to agree with that guess as well. My reason for thinking that is it is rare for uncapped brood to live after a removal, but an egg can last longer and given the length of time it took between the removal and the setting up of the hive, the egg was still viable. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Excellent camera work combined with regular beekeeping incidents, which happens to us all. Totally appreciate that Mr. Ed keeps it real! One of the patrilines in the colony may have dominated the selection of the new queen by drawing cells from eggs or young larvae that they alone wanted and possibly even destroying rival attempts in the lower box - a super-sister conspiracy to get the queen they want to run the colony. Either way, the colony came up queen-right with a great queen- congratulations.

What is the stuff that you scrape off of the bottom of the tendered wax?

Dirt and residue that was in the wax . When the wax hardens, the heavy debris that is in it winds up on the bottom of the block. Thanks for watching. God's peace Tammy. Mr. ed

God bless you and thanks for showing us that beautiful wax. When it is so dark I can see why the brothers use that for their soap. Soap can be honey colored. But for candles for the church they have to be lighter than tan. Ecru maybe. You really work so hard for God and the Abbey.

Why do the bees kill the queen please ??
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 11 месяцев назад
There are a lot of different reasons bees kill or replace their queens, but in the instance of this hive when a new queen was introduced and they killed her, I'm convinced the reason the replacement queen was killed was because the hive bees had already began making their own queen and that was the queen they wanted in the hive and not a different one. Wow, what a huge queen! What is the life expectancy of a queen bee? 😊
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 11 месяцев назад
I have been told they can live for 5 years, but generally, their productivity, the number of eggs they lay each day, decreases significantly after the first year and continues to decline which is why either the bees or the beekeeper replaces her within one or two years. Some beekeepers retire her and allow her to continue on perpetuating the genetics though at a very reduce rate. Thanks for watching. God's peace Lesley. Mr. Ed
