There's a couple reasons why Lena didn't recognize Shin's voice. The first being that his speaker was messed up, and compared to the PARA-RAID that directly links their senses to hear one another, it'd be tough to compare. The second is that it's been over a year since she's heard them, and on top of that, she's pretty much 100% certain they're dead, so there's no reason to think he'd be there.

It's stated in the LN that Shin's mic was broken so Lena couldn't recognize it. 10/10 episode tho!!!

Shin’s radio was damaged. That’s why Lena didn’t recognize the voice.

Basically it's like hearing your own voice being spoken, and hearing your own voice from a recording/external devices will sounds different. Lena hearing Shin's voice like Shin hearing his own voices (cause the link senses), here, Shin's voices getting through a communication device, so it will sounds different. Added to the messed up speaker, and Lena's rank is acually not Major anymore (she got demoted at episode 12), so Lena thinking Shin probably talking with his Major via communication devices while talking to her at the same time. Shin also not tell his name makes Lena not linking to that. Why Shin knowsit was Lena voice, it was after Lena introduces herself that her voice became clear, cause Shin can imagine what her voice was just from that info, so he doesn't need to know whether that's really her voice or not, she was telling her names. And to add to that, Theo also said Lena voice feels different, cause they not hearing Lena voice for a long time, Lena also have more strict/bold (like again Theo said), compared to her innocence voice back then. The seiyuu in commentary even said that, at episode 12, Lena voice feel different cause what she being through, she becam more cunnning/evil (bold to be precise), but she's not the naive girl like she was back then.

I think the part where they were saying thank you was coz in a way, aside from finding his brother, Shin is the Reaper meaning he was entrusted to take them all (the 86) with him to the end of this war. And it was just a big slap to Shin who was looking forward to returning somewhere he could call home when all of those who were saying thank you died and left him alone, just entrusting their wills on him. Totally not a LN reader, just my thoughts on it.

Im so glad that this masterpiece has returned. You can tell how scared and moved Shin was and Personally was I was screaming at my laptop with excitement. I was so pissed when Shin was about to get out of the cockpit and Legion appeared and I cant wait for next week episode. This is just beautiful 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Was not expecting the shoutout. Thanks so much! I was watching reviews all yesterday, but I always enjoy yours the most because you pick up on the emotional tones of the show more than most others doing reviews on them. To answer a couple questions, at least to my understanding... Q: Why were they showing all of Shin's dead friends thanking him while telling him he no longer had a reason to live? A: Survivor's guilt. Shin's killed over 500 former comrades to stop the legion from getting their heads. The whole "going on ahead" theme has been about people dying before him and leaving him behind. His mission has been to deprive the legion of black sheep heads for all this time, but taking the measures he does leaves deep scars. They're thankful for him not letting them get picked up by the Legion, but he's still scarred by it. Q: Was she talking to him through a recording? A: No. She was using the Para-Raid at that point. Whether it was due to temporary hearing loss, or his machine's audio was messed up, he couldn't hear her, but the new ear piece everyone in their unit was wearing (the thing he taps after she recognizes his voice) was developed from the Para-Raid that they used to use in the Republic. Last episode, it was how he heard Lena tell the artillery to fire, and to tell him to take cover. Now, they once again tapped into each others' frequency unknowingly. Since the Para-Raid transmits sensory data directly into the brain, it would bypass whatever hearing loss Shin had, and that's what allowed him to hear her voice. Q: Why didn't Lena recognize his voice? A: Up until that point, they had been communicating via Para-Raid. Like I said, it transmits the sensory data directly to the brain, which leads to near-perfect audio quality. Now, he was talking through a normal speaker that was pretty garbled after having likely been messed up in the fight, so it was, by no means, the same voice that she was used to hearing.

My boy Shin was super embarrassed and didn't want to meet her while he was a hot mess. He wanted her to see him confident and own his feet.

I HOPE they go into FULL detail about the 86 rescue operation and the response the Federacy has towards the Republics persecution. I was so happy to read that part.

i think the reason why they showed the Thank yous from the dead 86 was to show how in SHIN's mind he equates surviving to suffering and guilt. But when LENA comes in and talks about the dead 86 she equates their memories into motivation to keep on fighting and like that line she said that made SHIN cry-- she views surviving alone as "something you should be proud of." Akin to one of my favorite quotes "Sometimes even to live is an act of courage."

The excitement and joy we've all felt when Lena appeared can not be described in words. I was literally jumping and screaming in my room of happiness :))

It’s been so long!! This episode had me crying like a baby it was so beautiful 😭😭😭 oh btw they did the best they could to make it come across but in the moment when they were talking (shin and lena ) there was a lot of static coming from his comms due to damage from the battle as it’s described in the light novel

I personally took those thank you as irony. I think he is just being tormented by that feeling that they died following him into a journey with no real purpose but die. It makes sense given how they showed him being disconnected with the squad's desire to fight and keep living and it also makes Lena's words more impactful

Honestly a perfect episode imo the emotion and symbolism was peakkkk also the hatch scene was anime original, A-1 are evil💀💀

I shed tears in this episode…Lena really saved Shin here….In my head, Lena low key said “please dont die I want to be with you” to Shin.. I’m proud of seeing Lena grow into a stronger woman than she was at the start of the series and healed Shin mental state and wounded heart with the few words Shin and his crew left her with… The guy even thought he’d done everything he needs to do and had nothing else to live for, Shin was ready to die fighting one last time…

(I haven't watched the reaction yet but) here's a little sample of the reason why this anime has the romance tag on it~

I get it. The war hasn't been won yet and there's still a chance that they might all die so I think the reasons Shin didn't reveal himself make sense. The Spearhead squad is the reason Lena became who she is, her reason for moving forward and she has to keep going. Finding Shin might derail that and there's still a long way to go. Right at that moment was not the time to get distracted. Also I think Shin isn't quite ready to take a chance on finding something that might be even more painful to lose. That was such a rug-pull, honestly!! Soundtrack killed it yet again.

My interpretation of the scene around 3:30 or so is that it's meant to show how Shin has been continually drowning out all the good in his life with his own inner pain, represented by his own silhouette continuing to accuse and condemn him, even as all his comrades in the background thank him for all he's done.

i think the "thank you" the dead tell shin are their perceived last words, whenever undertaker took someone, that someone normally said thank you before being mercied

we rarely see emotions from shin so seeing him smile here just made me so happy, “oh that looked painful” LMFAOO

All the communications between Lena and Shin plus the squad have been telepathic. Shin has never seen her or heard her voice and really did not recognize her until she used the communicator. It would be the same for her as she only heard his voice on this encounter.

The reason they were saying thank you is because he ended their life before they became one of the Legions And enslaved to fight against The people they once called their friends It's demonstrating the survivor guilt he feel

I think they say "thank you" because they entrusted their will to Shin, and that is survive until the end of the war maybe(?), hence, they won't think that will they die for nothing If I will to put it on a conversation, it'll like this 86: What do we dying for? Reaper: For me to take you until the very end, I'll take your will to the future. For the 86 that have an uncertain future and can die any time, I think Shin gave them reassurance that their death won't be a meaningless one

this scaryness in shin eyes when legion was going to take him...

That was the adaptation. The radio was too garbled on her end. But when she here's his voice for real she instantly knew it.

Remember they all thanked him for killing them so they won't turn into the Legion. It was a deliverance for them. But those thank you became burden in time, when everyone dies around you and you have to move on, as the sole survivor, his friends kept dying one by one the EMOTIONAL DAMAGE started to kicked in, Shin finally broke. He wanted to just put them down and die.

the scene when they said there is survivors it hit me with the Star Fox Assault scene

In the LN, Shin's radio and mic were badly damaged after the battle with Morpho so it's clear that Shin's voice inside was distorted a lot, well looking back at Reginleif it's clear that the machine was badly damaged so that's why because Shin used an interpreter And Lena of course with that distorted voice she couldn't recognize him :v

Apparently in the Novels, Shin’s speakers were not functioning well cause of the state of his machine and his voice came out distorted and crackling with static… The fact that Lena basically says that a certain person’s existence made her a better person and he should be thankful to be alive as the music kicked in brought him back from the edge was a beautiful scene…

its been 2 years, Lena already accepted their death. She wouldn't just deduce that a lone guy out of nowhere from a different country could possibly be Shin. It might be just be someone with similar voice and he was talking through a speaker which should have been damaged.

The people who helped Shin beat Kiri last episode were the people of San Magnolia we are literally in their territory, maybe cause you missed her voice last episode you got confuse

You know you hear your own voice differently to other people ? Its called head resonance and due to the fact the para raid transmits what Shin hears to Lena, Lena never heared his voice with her own ears. Like standing right in front of him or using a phone. The system of his Juggernaut may have taken damage in that fight also, like his video screen was broken.

I think the reason they were saying thank you was because shin said he was going to take all of them with him to his final resting place but the reason they started getting mad was because shin didn't die that's why he carves out there symbol when they die
