“It’s basically like I went bonkers, I got locked up. And this is what happened, this is the journey.”

At the height of her career, Gail was one of the UK’s most sought-after female TV presenters. Most famously, she helped sell over a million copies of FHM magazine after her naked image was projected onto the Houses of Parliament.
Then over the next 20 years, things took a turn for the worse: she suffered post-natal depression, alopecia and was sectioned under the mental health act. In 2014 she even ended up sleeping rough on a park bench. How did this happen?

As a kid she was the unattainable pinnacle of gorgeousness. As a grown man who has struggled with anxiety and clings to my nerdy hobby, I just find her relatable and inspiring. Still a truly beautiful woman but I admire her bravery and openness so much more.

Gail Porter is just one of the most beautiful human beings,she has been treated so badly by the mental health system and let down by so many like so many who find themselves in such a situation as herself.She really needs to know how beautiful she is

no-one is born beautiful. babies are anything but. Also why should it matter? Beauty in the eye of the beholder is the last thing anyone should be concerned with. If your self worth is governed by how beautiful you or others think you are you need to take a look at your life.

I agree Ali as unfortunately feeling the need of the pursuit of perfection (especially with appearance) can cause mental health problems and never feeling good enough! We waste lifetimes worrying about this instead of just being our unique selves and feeling happy with that💚🙏💜

I don’t think he’s necessarily meaning beautiful in a physical sense. And I thought Iain’s comment was just gorgeous, and heartfelt. That said though, I agree that the focus shouldn’t be on « beauty ». When the word beautiful is used in relation to someone whose career was strongly based around looks, about which there is much insecurity, it feels like the wrong thing to be emphasising. I felt a discomfort with every comment hère that mentions Gail being « beautiful », as she already has so much unhealthy focus on physical appearance, when I’m sure there is so much more to her. Even the self deprecating humour feels very very sad. I hope she can some day love & appreciate her true self.

This was such an interesting documentary and I really think Gail showed her real strength to be that vulnerable when most of us hide behind our facade. i can sort of see why she hid a lot of her feelings. Some parents are just not in the same emotional realm and so you give up on being understood. All the things you've actually achieved and fought through you need to give yourself the credit.

Does anyone else experience that society doesn't take mental health issues seriously? We moved on a little but it's a life threatening issue and incredibly frightening and awful to go through. People feel put out if you are unable to communicate for a week or so and can't understand that mental illness is real and I feel frustrated that a physical illness isnt taken seriously (as it should be) but little compassion for mental problems. We really should have better understanding by now. Acceptance and a loving listening ear is key💚

I watched Gail's documentary and found it so inspiring. I have mental health issues too and terrible self doubt and Gail is so brave for speaking out and such courage for going through what she has and She has let no one down! and that includes her self X not her fault but the fact she is still a beautiful caring person she should jolly well be proud of herself! X thankyou Gail you have helped many with your honesty 🙏💚🌈wish you all the best of everything in life 💜✨

She is so strong 🙏🏻 she has had such a journey, I think she should be so proud of herself for surviving everything she has ❤️ Its clear the root cause of all her issues is clearly evident through her own words.. ‘I’m not good enough’ 😞 this is the ‘root’ cause for literally everyone’s inner demons and pain, then going down the wrong path in life makes those demons bigger ie for her a career in Tv which is a very superficial environment with being visually judged ect this would immensely add to feelings of not feeling enough when your being constantly judged and critiqued by media, peers ect, ie your not thin enough your not pretty enough which just confirms what you believe to be your core belief.. thus continuously attracting more and more of the same throughout your life!! Hence why you get worse not better! We have to heal the root the core of ourselves if we stand any chance of living with inner peace and inner authenticity 🙏🏻 I wish her well for her future as everyone deserves this within there lives and I hope she finds a way to obtain this in her lifetime ❤️ much love to you Gail, you really are much stronger than you realise 🙏🏻 x x

I thought it was a revealing documentary. It seemed to me also part of it was also the 90s zeitgeist. I think a lot of working class kids were trying to be successful and the music reflected that. That meant being totally out of your comfort zone and winging it in some high-pressure situation you really weren't in control of. I really sympathised with Gail's journey. I identified with her upbringing and even her relationship to her parents. The pressures of fame must have been enormous. When you become successful the one thing you cannot do is 'to fail' (in inverted commas). Everyone likes a neat 'happy ever after' story and sort of imagines that what fame means, but we all have demons and it's never that simple. I thought it was very moving.
@Nina5144

I think a lot of us do that in any walks of life. I was definitely out of my comfort zone at work, but I needed to earn money and it’s a case of having to force yourself to do it. I’m not comparing my life with hers, mine was an office job (!), but the anxiety, fear, ‘am I good enough’, was and is always there.

Self-harming isn't a mystery. When you experience physical pain your body releases internal/endogenous pain killers to relieve the pain. This can temporarily relieve mental pain as well, and that is why people compulsively engage in it. Gail isn't fundamentally mentally ill. She has a personality disorder (which is not a form of mental illness) and has experienced episodes of mental illness throughout her life, probably driven by her personality disorder. Borderline personality disorder is extremely difficult to treat and is a life-long disorder.
@mikmook4781
@mikmook4781 4 года назад
"She has a personality disorder (which is not a form of mental illness)" Spits a perfectly good Chardonnay across the room. What? No. A personality disorder is a chronic mental illness. You don't seem like a bad guy and I'm not trying to be a dick, but no.
@patrickwhite8144
@patrickwhite8144 4 года назад
@@mikmook4781 Well, ultimately, it depends upon how you define the term "mental illness". I, and others, don't define a personality disorder as being a form of mental illness because a person literally *is* their personality. An illness should be, at least potentially, separable from the person suffering the illness.

Because those things are so superficial and meaningless. There is such a deep pain and sadness in Gail. Her father is still judging, invalidating and devaluing her, and her experiences. I’d love to see Gail work with a really good psychologist/psychotherapist, and do some inner child work - especially around her teen years, which are such crucial years with regard to developing a sense of self. It seems to me that alongside being devalued at home, and made to feel bad and wrong for just being a normal, and I think probably energetic, enthusiastic, impulsive, fun-loving teen - that is, for just being herself (which always WAS more than good enough!), she likely then saw her only value as being in her looks and sexuality, as that’s where she would have received a lot of positive attention from boys, because she was such a pretty young girl. But placing your value in physical looks will never be enough. It sounds cliché’d but we really do need to learn to love, and truly like, ourselves, and keep becoming the person we really want to be. The person we can like. And that isn’t some perfect being, as we are all constantly growing, learning and becoming our best version of ourselves. And we need to be exceptionally kind, loving, understanding, accepting and forgiving of ourselves throughout that continual journey. And to learn yo humbly embrace and enjoy that journey. We need to really think about what values we want to live our lives by eg being kind, building others up. It’s important to have a clear idea of what really matters to us in our life journey. What we want to be able to look back on in years to come, and be humbly proud that we’ve been. Otherwise, we can just stumble clumsily and aimlessly through our lives, and have no clue what we stand for, or live for. Maybe we could do that each new year, for our WNY resolution. Think about what values, characteristics we want to work on and develop through the coming year. Gail seems yo have a gorgeously sensitive soul. That is usually accompanied by a great capacity to love, care and have compassion for others. I truly hope she can come to know her true intrinsic and infinite worth.

From time to time, you will make mistakes. They're inevitable. Sometimes those mistakes will be huge. What matters is that you learn from them. There's nothing wrong with falling down, as long as you end up just two inches taller when you pick yourself up off the floor. At times you may end up far away from home. You may not be sure of where you belong anymore. But home is always there. Because home is not a place. It's wherever your passion takes you. As you continue on your path, you will lose some friends and gain new ones. The process is painful, but often necessary. They will change and you will change because life is change. From time to time they must find their own way, and that way may not be yours. Enjoy them for what they are, and remember them for what they were. There's not much left, except I believe...I really do believe that sooner or later, no matter what happens, things do work out. Oh, we have hard times, we suffer, we lose loved ones. The road's never easy. It was never meant to be easy. But in the long run, if you stay true to what you believe, things do work out. Always be willing to fight for what you believe in, it doesn't matter if a thousand people agree with you or one person agrees with you. It doesn't matter if you stand completely alone. Fight for what you believe in. Which brings me to the first piece of advice my dad ever gave me and now I'm giving it to you: "Never...", "Never start a fight, but always finish it." Always finish it.

I encountered many many years with extreme hairloss too. It mentally breaks you when you don't get acceptable answers and treatment. I changed my clothing style too in that period, more freestyle and casual. I just wanted to feel comfortably and sporty and didn't want to draw attention; didn't care about dressing up and wearing high heels. Now I feel better and dress up more, but I maintain the same style as Gail has too, to feel at ease and dress younger, more sportwise, like a child who feels safe. People, well-meant, also said a lot I would feel better if I dressed up and got more make-up on.

Wow. She’s not milking it. She downplays it, if anything. But that’s all the media seem to want to focus on. I think she is still just looking for the approval and validation she didn’t get as a Terene from her family - like so many others. But she just happens to have at one time been in the media, so that’s her avenue to do that.
