This is something every artist needs to be able to do! Benchmarking your supplies is the best way to determine which brands, and which colors within brands, are delivering the best value. Thanks, Scott, for showing everyone your results!
I was really surprised that they didn't fade more than they did. Thank you for doing that for us. Now I feel more informed as to brands to use for different projects 💜
You'd be surprised how much UV light is blocked by regular glass (not even talking about UV resistant glass). In college we used quartz in the lab because of the UV blocking properties of regular glass. (was poking around looking for the 2 year checkup.)
After only a year you've quickly become one of, if not my favourite, creator. The combination of your art and positivity have made me respect you and enjoy watching you!
Cannot believe it's been a year! Thank you for helping you fellow artists (re)evaluate which products are worth the price and why. Your completely scientific 100% foolproof work is appreciated 😊
I started following your RU-vid after seen the hypothesis way back on day one- I can’t believe it’s been a year. It’s been an amazing one with you however! I’ve learned so much and you’ve brought joy back to art for me! Keep doing what you do and don’t stop been so sweet!
I'm amazed its been a year. It's so weird to look back on things you thought would take forever, and with the blink of an eye it's already there. Makes me motivated to take my fatloss seriously. It might seem like an eternity when I start, but a year will fly by and I'll have results, like this series of videos have had.
So a little science, pigments tend to vary in their lightfastness whereas dyes (which is the sharpie and most likely the watercolor marker) are almost guaranteed not lightfast. As for the difference with artificial light and sunlight, the artificial light has a smaller range of light wavelengths which is less potent than sunlight
Very surprised to see that so many of the red and orange samples held up pretty well, especially in the sun. Because I frequently notice bumper stickers where the red areas have faded to almost nothing, or just left behind a faint yellowish tint, but the other colors are holding up.
I find it interesting that blue pigment tend to fade more. I know it happens with blue dye on electric guitars. It's cool to see that happened on your test as well.
Love your art Scott! ❤ I really rushed on this comment because I want to be the first. Your art is beautiful and I would love to post my art but I don't think it is beautiful. Your art inspires me so much ❤
Wow! I can't believe I've been following you for over a year! I absolutely adore your channel. A year with you flew by! The results are amazing and I'm so very glad I found your channel. You Have pretty much single handedly improved my joy and knowledge of art ❤ keep doing the science! I love it
i can’t believe it’s been a year!! thank you so much Scott for doing this test, im planning on getting back into traditional art more so knowing what materials will help my work last is great!!
I’d really love to see a lightfastness test that includes a couple of samples that have been put in places where people would actually display art. It would be interesting to see how they hold up in a more ‘normal’ environment!
I can't believe it's been a year. That vid was actually the one that brought you to my attention and made me subscribe. You quickly became one of my favorite channels. I love your content, but especially your kindness, and positivity about art and life.
I kinda love watching you always coming back and checking up on them, it feels like a little check up with myself as well and MAN I gotta say TIME FLIES! Sending everyone who's reading this lots of love! 💖✨
Hey Scott I have a amazing in my opinion idea you should make a sketchbook of Greek gods there are so many and they all have their own styles I think that would be awesome
When i first started watching, you hadnt even started this yet and now its been a year! I cant believe the time thats gone past, i didnt even think id been watching you for that long lol
I've been watching this since you started and love the progress that has come from it! I started watching you about a year ago and this was one for the first things that I really fell in love watching on your channel. I loved the experimental aspect of it. Because of it I got sucked into your hair drawing and I love your work so much and you've inspired me so much this past year!!! Your style is similar to mine and I need to get back into my drawing habits. Thank you so much for being my inspiration this year! 😊
the winsor and newton markers and carandache watercolor pencils faded probably because they're in yellow and red maybe? im only just now noticing that all these different colors are actually different brands, i thought every brand had their own rainbow swatch :0 idk if you ever addressed this before, but some colors really do fade a lot more because of the specific pigments they use. So red paint from a high quality brand with amazing lightfastedness might still experience fading because red is known to be fugitive. If you ever do this test again, i'd love it if you chose consistent colors for them, like they're all the same shade of blue (iirc blue and black are the most stable pigments in watercolor)
this is so crazy that i have been watching your vids for 2 years i can’t believe thanks so much scott you made me love art and find my style and i today made my first commission art in 8th grade thanks so much for everything you do can’t wait for the next milestone LOVE YOU❤❤❤❤❤
Sheesh! Honestly, to me most of them did pretty, especially during the indoor light test- All but the crayola watercolours- Excited for the results next year! Hope it becomes some sort of yearly thing lol
Pretty sure watercolor pencils have dyes instead of pigments, for easy solubility - after all, you wouldn’t want to draw directly onto paper with a Chinese brush painting ink stick. Watercolor markers by necessity cannot have pigments. That’s why. Dyes aren’t as lightfast as pigments - especially the earth colors.
Okey, all the amazing content and "can't believe it's been a year" aside: CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT HOW FRICKIN CUTE THAT TAPE DISPENSER IS?!?😻 Scott, you are the best and such an amazing content creator, and most of all artist! Thank you for your videos and positivity! You are really inspiring 😊❤
You should totally do a test with paints and sealant sprays. I know a lot of the varnishes I use say they have UV protection so I wonder if that would help the light fastness of the brands that faded.
I love your art, video, voice, words and everything. Can you please make some basic drawing tutorial or give a guide? It will be fun to watch and learn from your video with your great voice and words. ”World need more art.”❤❤🎉
How has it been a whole year? I think my internal clock is broken. Very surprised to see some of the changes with some of the colors, but not surprised at the quality of fastness of the professional products. I mean, you're investing in the supplies and the lasting results, so it's good to KNOW the manufacturer takes that as seriously as the artist does. ❤❤❤
This test series was great! But for these longer videos, I'd suggest you to learn how to make better thumbnails It was fine when they were shorts, since people don't see the thumbnails anyway, but for longer form content the thumbnail starts becoming more important for CTR
I love this test! It's been fun to follow along. It would be nice to see how some of the markers you have fare as I feel like its known they don't age so well
At the next check in it would be interesting to see what everything looks like against a freshly painted piece to see if any of it is simply from the pigments breaking down over time.
ah yes, one of the original reasons I subscribed! I wanted to see the results so bad. no worries tho, I'm still tuning in for all the great art and tips!!
Time flies! Also, the I'm glad to see that the Himi Gouache held up so well. The little ketchup puddings did amazing! Ps, thanks for running these tests! These videos are super informational and helpful and alongside these, your art videos inspire so many of us, myself included. Endless thanks!
It's been a YEAR?! I remember watching the start of this when I had my baby boy! Now I'm watching this update while he runs around making his own art all over the house LOL.
