The thing is that in the light novel there was never any implied homosexuality. That's something the animators chose to do on their own, earning this anime the "yuri-bait" tag from audiences. So unless they chose to part far away from the novels later on, the characters had to end up hetero

I feel like there was some miscommunication between the author and KyoAni for the first season. KyoAni was like, "Oh hey, Kumiko and Reina are totally on a crash course to romance together, let's connect them with the red string of fate in the ED!" and the author was like "Oh, oh no. I was planning to hook Kumiko up with Shuu." leaving KyoAni like "THEN WHY DOES SHE KEEP REBUKING HIS ADVANCES!?!?"

I don't necessarily want Kumiko to end up with Reina, or even necessarily a woman. I just don't want her ending up with Shuuichi because it has been clearly shown that she's not into him. Every single advance he's made has been rebuked, so any possible hook up between them will feel like she just relented because she was tired of saying no, and that's not a romance I want anywhere.

I agree that there hasn't been any highlights showing a possible romance between the two, but at the same time their relationship is one that I can see evolving into a romance. Shuuichi helped Kumiko more than once in the series, and they did have some moments that, while not romantic, are intimate to a degree. I think Kumiko's 'rejection' is mostly because she is still unsure of how to deal with these situations rather than not wanting to be with him. I believe Kumiko and Reina have more chemistry which is why I support that ship, but at the same time I don't think a potential romance with Shuu is impossible.

Kumiko year 2 was spilt into two novels as well. Second Movement part 1+ part 2 with the True Story collection.

@@foxtrix ah you are correct However i would still say its unlikely since there is some important stuff in the short story collection that alone could take mult eps like the ensemble concert story. And either way they would need more than one movie to finish more than one book clearly. I think they have only really announced it as one follow up project tho.

@@zUJ7EjVD Well yes, Rena obsession is weird because it is never reciprocated and it will never go anywhere and even gets shot down multiple times and she still is obsessed, not even with the guy, but with the ideal she sees in him. I would argue that this ordeal simply feels unnatural in a show that aims to be realistic. The problem about the yuri bait is not that it had yuri in it but that it never acted on anything. Either don't put bait into your show just to lure people in or you act on it so it is not just bait but proper yuri. The way KyoAni handles yuri is infuriating. They always hint at some yuri stuff but never act on it ever. It is like they want the attention of that audience, but not the backlash from traditionalists or something. (Dragon-maid is the only exception I can think of.)

if you are even remotely interested in Eupho stuff, give Finale Oath a watch. Basically Liz and Blue Bird+Finale Oath will make up the anime adaptation of Kumiko's second year at Kitauji High.
