People are working but still can't afford proper housing, causing homelessness in America to increase at a record rate.
This video incorporates interview segments with a homeless man, and relates what he says to news reports and articles from the past year. These stories combined illustrate that many people are being priced out of housing.
There are people in this country who are working as Highschool principals, accountants, firemen, and police officers, yet they cannot afford a house or apartment anywhere near the communities where they work.
As a result, many people are living in tents, hotels, campers, and garages.
If having these kind of jobs puts people at a risk of becoming homeless, then how are the people who are already homeless supposed to better their situation?
Here are the links to the stories I mentioned in the video.

I wish there were more people talking about this. It’s scary to know that you can be “gainfully” employed in a place like Florida and still have nowhere you can afford to live.

As I told a guy here online recently, yeah I work everyday, and have a house, but all it would take is a $300,000 medical bill. That would put anybody on the streets. I'm in Florida, home insurance is very hard to get. I don't have it. When I leave every morning I unplug all gadgets because if this house goes up I will surely be out on the street. It's a very delicate web we have woven here...

I used to think like that before I did some time at a local hospital. Bills came out to 100k. Through insurance, financial aide and some begging the system for help, I got 100k down to a few hundred bucks. You must be resourceful in this mad world. Life is a war zone. Do you must do to stay afloat.

Hey brother, I just found your channel. I'm already a big fan. I have to tell you the homeless problem in our country should not happen. The men and women who fought for this country deserve to have their people safe and living in a home. we do so much for other countries, and our people are suffering. Our government doesn't take care of our people . And I don't think they ever will. But your content is amazing, thank you

Great vid man, people don't know the reasons why some poor people become homeless. I see it here in the UK all day, people have lost someone or lost a job or are suffering with mental health problems. As a human race I'm disgusted the way some homeless are treated, I'm a health professional and see them when they become my patients it makes me shed many tears to hear their stories. As we know 'there but for the grace of God go I' God bless them all and god bless you Eric for highlighting this issue, thank you.

I'm definitely worried about the future as well. Because everything is going up, rent, utility costs, food costs. And yet salary is either either stagnant or not going up enough, which means every single year you are losing money. It's not uncommon here to have to spend 50-60% of your salary just to apart a basic 2 room apartment. I definitely feel for these people and always try and go out of my way to help the homeless i meet, if they need some clothes, food, water etc. Great video as always.

Having watched the previous episodes with Joe, I think its time that the better off of 'society' dug a little bit deeper in their hearts and pockets. Homelessness is Hopelessness and things spiral out of control rather quickly when someone experiences one or both of these emotions thru no fault of their own. Sure there are many exceptions to the rule when narcotics, alcohol and violence are tossed into the mix, but the security, well-being, and mental health struggles of any person must be tolerated with a view to breaking a cycle of damnation. It's obvious to me that local government aren't interested in helping the homeless and would rather sweep the undesirables of the City, State or whatever under the carpet and do nothing. I know and have experienced Homelessness in and around many Towns and Cities around the UK and other than Hostels,Cheap hotels and the like, NOTHING is being done to support the Homeless and rough sleepers whatsoever .. Kinda sad .. Fantastic post as always, Erik.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it... and thanks for your perspective on the topic. it's scary. . I have a Federal job. . make descent money ,full time permanent employee. . however. If I hadn't purchased my home 14 years ago, which was a foreclosure and I got it for a huge deal, I could easily be homeless along with my family. How? because the housing market in my area currently requires $2K a month for rent or about the same if I bought a home right now. That is over half my take-home pay for the month. . . I could never afford my rent, gas, insurance, food (just the basics) if I had to pay $2K a month for rent. it just wouldn't work. And I don't even have a car payment, everything I own is paid off. . but just to pay the new rents that I see around town would put me on the street.
@ErikKSwanson
@ErikKSwanson 9 месяцев назад
I read an article last year that the national average was $2k per month for rent. I'm sure it has only gone up since then. And obviously some areas a much more than that. someone told me the other day they saw a one bedroom apartment for $2,700 the next town over from me. I don't see how anyone can afford that and also gas, food, etc. You need to be rich these days just to live in a crappy small apartment

@@ErikKSwanson yeah the number of working poor is a large one. Again one bad medical bill could destroy you. All the factors like having no address, place to shower, losing your I.D. /paperwork, losing a family member. not being able to get your medication for diabetes, blood pressure, psychosis. There are a ton of extenuating circumstances that rest of society does not even consider. They just look at the person yelling at fire hydrant as trash. Maybe that person just cant get their meds. Or a family member or someone beat them or worse. Use your imagination on how depraved humans can be. People born with cognitive and chemical imbalance are left behind. We used to put them in asylums because we didnt know what to do with them, after we could no longer lobotomise them. Sorry for such a long response. Its just thst to call ourselves a species that prizes justice and honor and freedom we sure dont seem to have a lot of compassion for the most vulnerable.

Going through the same situation. I have a full time government job that pays just barely above what a target employee makes but since housing is so expensive I have to live with grandmother and parents in order to split cost we can all afford rent. Those people are striking because they aren’t earning enough money to live. The problem is corporate greed. Oil companies are making record profits, while fuel prices hit record highs. Maybe the corporations should pay their workers a living wage instead of giving millions in bonuses to the C suite

@@Hearmeout503 the people on strike ARE going out and getting it. They want to earn more money, so they’re striking to get it. In one sentence you say people should fight for what they want, then the next they should just accept their shit pay. Plenty of people just can’t afford rent or groceries - period. They’re not taking loans or whatever other nonsense you’re talking about. Do you think the teachers in the article I mentioned and linked to were living it up in their camper? Or the cops and firefighters mentioned in that article are driving a rolls Royce? No, they just don’t earn enough money to afford rent or a house where they live. There is a reason there are labor laws. If corporations were allowed to still hire children they would. If they could require 16 hour work days for 7 days a week they would. Those things used to happen. Our country isn’t seeing record levels of homelessness because people are living beyond their means. It’s because earning a living wage is not available since companies value stock prices and dividends over their employees.
