Why is it cringe to have a hobby? To partake in something that is harmless and gives you joy? I swear. People judge over everything. They just don’t want you to be happy and enjoy things.
Hell yeah man!! I’m in my 50’s and collect micro machines and old nerf blasters🤷🏼♂️👍🏻 single guy who’s happy with a cheap hobby and not hurting anyone and my friends like the stuff I collect cause they remember when they had this stuff when they were young and it’s a cool conversation piece👍🏻 and it all sparked from my ex’s young son who wanted to play with nerf blasters and hot wheels cars and he was little so the rest is history😊
Because the hobby is consumption. For many, such hoarding is off putting as the unfettered consumption doesn't have any depth. There is no creativy or production in accumulating things. Such people come across as boring and unimaginative.
@@microbios8586 I think that is clearly an opinion. How do you place a non-value on something that makes a person happy? Where u see no value, somebody else does. It is no different than a person collecting fine art. Just looking at it can inspire and bring joy. Especially if there is nostalgia attached to it. I feel you have spoken as a true non collector and unless you collect, i do not expect you to understand. I would hope you would be open minded and again, just allow people to enjoy things, even if you do not understand it.
I’m here, I am Kenough and I don’t care who knows. Been a doll collector for years, my inner child gets nurtured and cared for and I’m so glad to see others doing similarly x
I teach high school, and one of the things I do is specifically mention that I collect fashion dolls (Monster High, Ever After High, Rainbow High). And when one of the "too cool" kids asks why, I tell them because I like them and I have money now to buy the things I like. One of the perks of being an adult is you can have that discretionary income, and there's no parent telling you that you're "too old" to play with toys. The kids who still like toys get me, and we have a point of connection. The kids who think it's cringe chalk it up to the fact that I'm a geek - something I also tell them on the first day of class - and it's another geeky thing about their teacher. Win-win. And I get to play with my dolls to destress after work.
I like your attitude about doll collecting. U explained it well. Many are put in the position of having to defend themselves about an enjoyable hobby. If it gives u joy do it!
My dad has been collecting memorabilia, toys and collectibles since he was 12 and he's 75 he passed down all his hobbies to all his kids we are all are 38, 55, 43 We are passing down our passion's to our children too
I was a boy in the 90s. My obsession was Transformers (specifically Beast Wars.) An obsession that didn't stick with me into adulthood. To me they're art pieces that sit on my shelves. I have some anime statues and action figures but I'm preferring dolls these days thanks to the level of articulation and customization many provide. My grandma has a huge collection a ceramic figures at her place. This is just my generation's version of that.
I'm autistic and I have a collection of dolls and actionfigures (yes, we exist 😅) Dolls and actionfigures have really helped me to stim and regulate. Back in 2015 I started collecting action figures and in 2019 I started collecting dolls again. Then I moved and doll collecting came to a halt for 3 years but I got back into it in 2022.
In actuality more people in their 30,s are buying toys the next generation are glued to their phones being brainwashed into adult behavior. When millennials pass toy industries will begin to fade their won't even be enough kids around to keep them alive
I don't let it bother me. Ill do what I like. Folks who criticize toy collectors have no hobbies or interest and go crazy in ennui. During the quarantine I was not complaining neither was other toy collectors. lol
I know right? Not all of us adults scroll through Facebook for hours or are constantly on social media..I watch a good women I was with start really going downhill after social media became a thing and she was hooked and it was sad to see and she changed and she wanted to split after 17 years with a married guy from our running club👍🏻👍🏻 yeah social media and texting were really good things to happen 🤦🏼♂️😩
Yeh i have noticed that too with family members. My youngest niece who is 10 years old already has her own ipad, phone. And she threw away all her toy's cuz she's "to old for pony's" it made me upset to hear that she hates toy's now and find them cringe. She even went as far as to insult me for collecting dolls as an adult to heal my inner child
You’re spot on. Most of the kids I know have devices. My younger sister has an iPad and phone too but surprisingly, she still plays with a lot of her toys. She and I both actually collect and play with lps lol even when she’s on her phone, she usually watches videos about toys. So it’s nice seeing that kids around her age still seem to enjoy playing with toys, despite how prominent devices have become.
@@Wassupmehreminds me of when my younger sister told her friends that she and I collect toys together expecting their reaction to be good only for them to start laughing because I collected them lol It’s a shame that a majority of kids today think it’s childish to play with toys (despite toys being their target demographic) Also hey, don’t let that put you down. At the end of the day, toys are just inanimate objects and if that makes you happy then so be it. It’s not harming anyone. Hopefully your niece will unlearn that kind of thinking as she grows up.
@@IsThisJd thanks for the kind words(: and i am sorry that your sisters friends laughed about you. But you're right. Collecting toy's does not effect anyone in a negative way
Escapism and nostalgia is definitely the main reason that I turned to doll collecting. Also as you mentioned some of us simply weren't allowed to have certain toys when we were growing up because of the outdated idea of dolls being for girls etc. The world is literally on fire at the moment - and not in a good way - a lot of us fear the future so escaping for a couple of hours with toys that we remember from our childhood is incredibly beneficial.
This is the 3rd time in my life I have actively collected dolls and I am "out" about it and honestly don't care who knows. Love your video and your voice is very soothing ❤
I feel that I have had a very nice life being a doll and toy collector. I agree with other comments that have said, What is the big deal! I've been very responsible, paid my bills on time yet my extra money always went to my hobby! Doing something that makes you happy is not a crime as long as it's legal!😊
God forbid we adults want something that brings us happiness. Edit: I've been collecting Monster High since 2011 and Ever After High until 2014, (I only collected the basics from both lines unless it was a line I really liked)) an am I stopping? well My collection is one pause since last April since I have my dog, but I still buy the odd one
I’ve been collecting MLP since I was 8. Now that i’m an adult, whenever I bring up my collection to my mom’s side of the family, the first question I get is “when are you going to sell them”. Is my collection worth money? Absolutely. Would it make me happy to sell them? Absolutely not.
Yeah, completely agree with everything you said. I was never able to purchase stuff that I really liked. I don’t collect dolls, but I do collect lps and have a whole large bundle of plushies on my bed lol
Yes sir gen x here👍🏻 I have a lot of micro machines from the 80’s and also collect older nerf blasters and like to mod and fix them as well👍🏻 and don’t get me started on video games and all the systems I have😝🤷🏼♂️
I have always loved Barbie, but never collected. The spark that started it all was my daughter - when she turned about 5 years old I realised that I wasn’t really shopping for Barbies for her, I was shopping for me! I had a total epiphany and now I have bought 50 dolls in the space of a year 😂 for MYSELF 💕 I’m obsessed and happy and slightly overwhelmed 😂 all the emotions. I’m now starting to get extremely interested in Monster High G3. I love the diversity and body shapes and I think they might be my next purchase.
This isn’t a new thing actually. Tabletop games were invented for adults. Miniature war tabletop games like Warhammer, wich is a huge fandom have their roots in century old tabletop cavalry and infantry strategy games that were set up at parties, gentlemen clubs etc. And those were for adults and very strategic. The small toys soldiers for boys came out of those games. Fathers gave sons a few soldiers to play with, as the son of course wanted to play too but was too young. Eventually manufacturers started producing soldiers specially for boys to play with. Intricate dollhouses were originally a bonding project of mother and daughter. The mothers were very invested in arranging the perfect little rooms. Most of these dollhouses weren’t even intended for kids to play with, as they were too precious. Kids playing with dollhouses came later. Those tabletop games and dollhouses were family heirlooms. And we can all imagine the kids begging to play with them. So eventually kids versions were made. The toy industry like we know it has its roots in the Victorian era. From there it grew to its peak in the 1990s with massive, beautiful toy stores like seen in home alone. With less and less kids playing with toys and preferring Tablets and other digital media, adults will only become a bigger focus of toys again.
Being the 90s kid, I was too old by the time the best Barbie lines were releasing to get them from my parents, but still too young to buy them myself. I missed My Scene, So in Style, Fashion Fever, early fashionistas, generation girls. Literally the entire golden age of Barbie releases. I collect nowadays, but have to put considerably more effort into customization to have the collection half as good as those releases. It's sad but it also allowed me to develop a new passion, doll customization! It's great fun on its own so I'm very much enjoying my hobby with no shame whatsoever.
Great video. I am in the low end of the baby boomers. I feel the nostalgia with dolls I played with as a little girl when life was more innocent and before it became more confusing. I support our hobby. I will not apologize for loving my dolls as an adult. I was glad you mentioned that it’s not necessarily “arrested development” rather a way to nurture our inner child and bring peace and meditation into these crazy times we are living in. Thank you. 🙏😊
I started collecting dolls last year and i already own 48 dolls in total. I love dolls i never hated them. But due to the overwhelming opinion of people who say "toy's are for kids, if you collect toy's as an adult you should grow" i hate that opinion so much, since toy's can be enjoyed by everyone.
For real. I already have to spend most of my day miserable at work dealing with rude ignorant people. I should have the right to enjoy tapping into my inner child and hobbies the moment I get home.
It shouldn’t b surprising adults r where consumption prominently stems from. Funds r much harder 2 manage with kids. I rarely got toys I wanted as a kid & now I get 10x the amount. My sis was 4tunate with my grandparents’ love so she gets toys that connects her with her youth. I was raised migrated & in a poor household so I get toys I never got. But simultaneously my sis loves collecting & I love playing/designing toys. There is an adult value 2 toys that’s more than amending ur childhood. I think being autistic makes it easier 4 me 2 justify my enjoyment … but certainly toys, video games, etc., r 4 EVERY1.
But actually, I wasn’t that interested in toys growing up. I consistently wanted My Little Ponies & Bratzillaz. But I only truly appreciate them now as an adult.
I can personally say as an adult, toy content creator. I’ve seen many toy boxes and they never have an age cap. It always says “a number” with a plus sign. Toys strike creativity and imagination for all ages. I can go on for ages but I’ll stop now lmao.
Toys are like owning things you can't have. Sport cars, trains, buildings or a whole town. The beauty that we can't prosess, dolls forever in shape and beautiful. Places we want to go, space, deep ocean and fantasy places. The most important aspect is control. Most things in live we can't change but in our own world we are the master.
I'll never stop disliking the term "kidult." Also, why do some people find it necessary to poop on the activities of others when they're not affecting anyone else?
First of all no preschoolers BUY their own toys. Adults buying for themselves or anyone else actually are Buying them. There is nothing wrong with that and it’s about time that adults are listened to on the toy industry also the stereotype of toys for adults not being ok is just ended. Toys are for everyone.
I’m 40 in my early teens i sold my lego and barbie dolls as it was seen at 13 your where too old for these things but in later years it became okay. i got back into dolls when monster high was popular and later back into lego when they started the mario series. If you love something just collect it it’s not hurting anyone. I don’t think i’ve ever gone a full year of my life without buying any type of toy so it’s always there 😊
Here's how I explain it to new friends and family, collecting toys is like collecting items for a sports team or artist you like. It's stuff that brings people joy and we don't judge people for decorating their house with football merch, why are dolls so different? I'm not bothering anyone with my collection, it's not cringe, it's cringe to judge others for doing something that isn't harmful.
So it's cringe for an adult to enjoy toy collecting as a hobby, but it's not cringe for an adult to indulge in drugs, sex, and clubbing as a hobby?😐🙄 this is no different then men destressing with video games or women collecting bags or makeup. It's so stupid how people are quick to look down on folks who finds happiness out of toys.
Another example is like people when growing up their parents guardians I can't afford anything especially living a apartment for rental housing like i didn't get my Nintendo 3DS until I was 13 by then the Nintendo switches was out I didn't get it until tax return money because the pandemic has started when I was young I always wanted a Barbie dream house but I live in a two-bedroom apartments at the time me and my brother had to share a bed in my sister was born she was on the NICU I don't remember if my parents paid anything or insurance after she got better then we moved to a rental house and got kicked out for some reason likely for having the house dirty because we were so busy my brother played soccer at a time so we basically in and out school put physically have to drive like 24 minutes get the to my hometown to go to school and I was also in my therapy for my mental disabilities as well we were busy and now we're moving to three bedroom apartment now and saving money much as we can pay off debt turn off all the house I'm either going to get a job or get money from the government since I'm on welfare for me my mom was on the program but not anymore she works now that's my problem another example is that people who living in toxic environments I heard about the parents throwing kids toys away really sad to see now I collect Pokemon cards and plushies things like that I have over the years I'm 20 this September I'm not going to stop you cannot charge no one's hobby you never know what they will do in the past
This sounds a bit like the Kawaii thing in Asia. Young adults had little hope of thriving as adults in a stagnant economy that had no place for them, so they essentially adopted the aesthetics of childhood. Ours features Barbie and Ninja Turtles.
I think it's rather 'CRINGE' to judge just because everyone wants to make fun of everyone else. As an adult I have the money to buy what I want...and I will buy what I want because I feel like it, and whoever has an issue with it can go stuff-it! Growing up, I couldn't afford to buy what I REALLY wanted, so now that I have a job and money left over after bills and savings...I'll buy all the toys I want, for me. 🥳 🎉
Having a hobby is cringe….🤔 umm ok, better than making a dumb tik tok video in public or taking selfies in front of someone trying to enjoy their day out, minding their own business 🤦🏼♂️👍🏻
Everyone who is a collector and comments here I would love to get you all out on a field and hand you a bunch of nerf super soakers and we all would have an amazing fun day😝😊
Im a serious doll collector and plushies i love Barbie dolls and I buy Barbie clothes off of Temu. I dont care it makes me happy when our America is doomed i need to get my happiness where i can❤❤❤
I've been collecting action figures since I was a kid. Honestly, you are just an ingredient normie. Action figures are also made for adult collectors like hot toys or play arts kai, etc.
Unless an adult is pushing others out of the way or grabbing toys/plushies out of someone's arms/basket... Who cares? If there is no harm being done then why should anyone care about what anyone else is doing? People have many reasons for a lot of things and just because youre an adult doesnt mean you have to stop enjoying simple/small joys. What may seem unnecessary or 'cringe' to other people may bring a lot of joy to someone else. The world needs to let people have their own joys again. As long as that joy isnt causing hurt/suffering/disturbance to others, then lets just let others be happy :) Besides, the people who throw shame about others are usually just trying to hide their own shame they have about something else. Lets all just be happy again. World sucks enough as it is.
I think it's wrong that we set an age limit on play when it is scientifically proven to be beneficial at all ages. I do worry that some people are just chasing that dopamine rush, buying stuff that will just sit and judge them later as it crowds out any room for contentment, that they may be buying irresponsibly, or that they are using it as a coping mechanism. There have always been toy collectors, I just think due to social media, the pandemic scare, and young people more willing than any other generation since the 70s to fight against "social norms", it has become more widely acknowledged and seen as an acceptable option. Makes sense that boomers taught to "stop acting like a child" at age 5 and start taking on household responsibilities, see this as a weakness or fault - it was beaten into them that they had to fit molds.
This guy is doing this video for clout which is obvious guys if you collect something like I do just do your thing there’s nothing wrong with having a hobby just don’t be too invested into it
Well my siblings have phones and my parents are still low income. .... Who is gonna make me happy when not myself?😂 I give every toy I buy to my siblings or friend's children tho 🤡😎
