The song was written by Richard Rogers (music) and Lorenz Hart (lyrics) for the Broadway musical production "On Your Toes" with the first live performance on March 21st 1936 by Doris Carson and Ray Bolger. Other recordings for example in 1936 by Hal Kemp and His Orchestra with Skinny Ennis, Henry King and His Orchestra with Joseph Sudy or in 1957 by Sarah Vaughan with Hal Mooney and His Orchestra.
Johnny Hauser (born John F. Hauser on October 27th 1910 - died in July 1985) was an American Singer, known mostly as a singer with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra from 1934 to 1936. He filed a lawsuit against the bandleader, claiming he had not been properly compensated for his vocal efforts. Only few recordings with him exist.
