When Love Hurts
Two and a half years ago, I found myself in the depths of a nature reserve in Colombia when a call rung on my cell phone. I was surprised because there was hardly any signal. It was Carolina, a gift that came into my life 41 years ago when I first hugged her and who, when her mother died, I promised to take care her as my own daughter.
Carolina called me crying on November 26, 2021, the anniversary of her mother’s death, to tell me she needed me by her side. She had just received a diagnosis of advanced pancreatic cancer.
That day, our lives changed forever. It took me over a week to get to her side. I had to use a motorcycle, a 4x4 vehicle. Several flights and drove over one thousand miles to be able to hug her.
During these nearly two and a half years, I had been by her side through chemo, radiation, and experimental treatments.
I was also fortunate to have shared with her what we loved most: watching her kids grow up, hiking through the golden autumn woods, hiking trails in the icy mountains, and cooking.
During the past few weeks, I just held her hand when cancer decimated her body and began to win the battle. She died yesterday, and the shock of her death engulfs me.
I still find it hard to dimension the pain of your departure, my beautiful daughter.
