It's hot as balls outside, but that doesn't mean we can't go out and compare the ranges between 1.5 Watt, 3 Watt, and 5 Watt GMRS and FRS radios. In this comparison, we took a Midland X-Talker T51 and put it up against the 3 Watt RB26 and 5 Watt RT76P from Retevis in a real world test of signal strength over distance and through some common obstacles, all on a 100°F afternoon here in Phoenix, AZ
Is the cheap $22 Retevis RB26 a better value than the Midland T51 that sells for $50 a two pack? Does having 5 watts in the RT76P make a bigger difference? Watch and find out.

It makes a big difference on range if you hold the radio straight up and down when transmitting. For best range, the transmitting and receiving antennas need to be in the same orientation. Also, whether or not and how you are holding the radio makes a difference. Believe it or not, you hand that is holding the radio is part of the antenna.....

Be advised. Retevis often lies about the output wattage. In the case of the RB26 the FCC shows that radio only has a maximum output of 1.79 watts.
@timtaylor8557
@timtaylor8557 3 года назад
In comparison the RT76P shows a maximum of 4.47 watts on the FCC site.

They’re not the only ones to lie on output watts. Very few radios meet the specs they claim.

Finally, the Midland T51 shows a maximum of 305 mW on the FCC site (FCC ID: MMAT55A). Furthermore, it shows 247 mW for the channel used in this. Not sure if there ever was a version that put out a supposed 1.5 watts. Interesting comparison video.

Years ago Radio Shack had a rather clever idea. They built an FRS radio into a waterproof magnetic base (with a non-detachable antenna on top) and attached an external mic with a long-ish cord with all of the controls it. All the user had to do was stick the radio on to his vehicles roof, run the mic through the window, and voila: an FRS radio with an antenna outside the vehicle that fully complied with FCC regs. They sold these shortly after the FRS bands became available, and have all of the issues with the early FRS radios, but the still worked surprisingly well. You can still find them on eBay, but they are selling for around $150, which I think is a bit much for a 40 year old used radio! But the idea is still a good one, I think, especially in light of the current 2 watt FRS regs now in place, which would give it a truly usable range (a couple of miles as opposed to the 1/4 mile original). It seems like that might be the ideal radio for overland newbies that don’t want to invest in a GMRS license. I am a bit surprised that no one has resurrected the concept.

Thank you! I'm gonna have a more in depth review of the RT76P coming out in the next week or so along with a couple of mobile units in the coming weeks. Anything in particular you're dying to see?

The RT76P has a removable antenna. This will allow a longer antenna to be installed and will help its talking range. Too bad it doesn't have the flash light of the RT26 or the usb-c charging.
@MattKester
@MattKester 3 года назад
Yeah, I’m definitely gonna do a more in-depth video on it. The USB C would be nice, interestingly enough though, the cradle for it doesn’t hook into 110, it’s got a regular usb plug on it! I wonder if the RB27 has a removeable antenna, I’ll have to go back and watch old Randy’s video on it again! It seems like it was basically a rb26 with a display and keypad.

It was an issue with chirp programming the RB26. I had gotten a couple of them and noticed that the retevis software would program it but chirp wouldn't. I had left an inquiry on the website and since then the issue has been fixed.

Good testing modality. When you continue with your testing would you use an external antenna on the roof of your home. You seem to be on a really flat surface, I’d like see see one of these radios perform with a 20 foot height. Thanks for your testing.
@MattKester
@MattKester 3 года назад
Thanks. I did have it sitting on a third floor window, but I’d love to be able to test with a 20 ft on the roof. The only problem is we live in an apartment building, so putting anything of the roof won’t fly. I do have some 500-700 foot peaks in the preserve behind our house I could try getting up on top of and doing some range testing. I’ve been meaning to take the RT76 up there and see if I can hit some more distant repeaters with it. I can hit one about 35 miles away from the valley floor, but it’s on too of a mountain about 1500-2000 feet above us.

@@MattKester I've got a leaky rad but it sits at about 85c rolling around town. It's only 20c up here in BC though. It will climb past a hundred if I start pushing it up hills! Slowly but surely working out the kinks.

I hear ya. Man, I’d rather be up there than down here in this heat right now! It’ll be interesting to see how hot she gets climbing up outta the Phoenix area next week. The high is gonna 117F/47C on Tuesday when we roll out for our trip. Gonna have the climb up to flagstaff, then back down into the painted desert before climbing back up to the Kaibab Plateau. Plenty of opportunity to see just how hot she gets!

I definitely appreciate the video I'm surprised you managed to transmit true that Fahrenheit cage however I can tell you at the same time with gmrs radio FRS I was using a Uniden a different model a baofeng radio as a receiver one of my friends went with one of my Uniden radio FRS frequencies he was about 1 mile up on a mountain UBC University of British Columbia area this is about 300 feet above the city we were doing a distance roughly 52km about 30 miles managed to get a signal going at 500 500mw I'll put on FR-S channel 10 signal went through of course I had to put the monitor button on so they would be not noise blocking just listening to the frequency itself communication get established between two Uniden I noticed the model you were using as a Uniden not the best it mainly has to do with the height of your antenna and you frequency calibration another time I did this time gmrs frequency testing 2 baofeng radio we did 112 km signal was weak however it was still coming in you walked it does make a difference you need to have a minimum of 500 MW Watts half a watt if you have the right antennas the solar activity is not too bad you can do some quite long range you will have to have longer antennas I also like the fact that the retevis radio has a longer antenna that's how you can get better performance your power output yes as well however very important your antenna calibration will make a big difference

About as clear as if you were standing next to one another. GMRS with clear line of sight is pretty awesome. I’ve stood on one mountain top, and hit a repeater on one 125 miles away with a 5watt HT and the people I was talking to thought I was much closer than I was.
