Sea cucumbers are animals that live on seabeds and coral reefs. The texture of their body can be lumpy, bumpy, or even spiky. They are amazingly flexible, becoming as pliable as wax or as stiff as a board within minutes or even seconds. Such flexibility allows sea cucumbers to wriggle their way into tiny crevices and then stiffen so that predators cannot pull them out. The secret of the sea cucumber lies in its remarkable skin.Consider: The sea cucumber’s skin has three states-stiff, medium, and soft. To change between states, sea cucumbers link or unlink fibers in their skin. They do so by activating different stiffening or softening proteins.Stiffening proteins form tiny bridges, or chains, between fibers in the connective tissue, making the skin more rigid. Softening proteins unchain the fibers, making the skin softer. Sea-cucumber skin can become so soft that it seems to melt.Scientists are developing materials that mimic the adaptability of sea-cucumber skin. One of their aims is to create electrodes for brain surgery that are stiff enough to be placed in precisely the right spot but that will also then soften. I remembered being at the California science center once checking out the kelp forest tank. A dad with his son enters the room, the kid runs to the glass wall, points at the bottom of the tank and yells “DAD LOOK! A SEA CUCUMBER!! WOOO!! SO COOL!!” and the dad tries to show him the awesome different kinds of fish swimming like “yeah, but did you see this eel? And that shark?!” But the kid straight up ignores him and goes “yes...BUT DID YOU SEE THE SEA CUCUMBER DAD?!? WOW!!!” 😂 one of the most hilarious moments ever. Coyote reminds me of that kid lol

We got some gnarly looking sea cucumbers out here in N. California too. I see them sometimes when I’m spear fishing or abalone diving. Never picked one up before but I might next time. Love these episodes in Hawaii guys. You’re doing a great job getting ppl back in touch with nature.

I would reccomend starfish legs as meat, snail mucas and leach blood as sauce, sea cucumbers as pickles, and two gumboots as burger buns. Perfect burger! Edit: dont forget the raw sea weed as lettuce :)
