All British people should celebrate the 12th because William III accepted the British crown as a constitutional monarch so that from 1690 onwards the parliaments were more powerful than the monarch. This was the birth of democracy in Great Britain and Ireland. It should be about democracy and not division.
@PK-sc2vn
@PK-sc2vn 2 года назад
Yeah, because the Northern Irish state (also celebrated by the Orange Order) was such a template for democracy, what with gerrymandering and fair housing policies...
@JohnHillEU
@JohnHillEU 2 года назад
Also introduced the Penal Laws which meant Catholics had no voice in that parliament, couldn't inherit land from protestants, marry protestants, inherit land from protestants etc. Took centuries after his death before civil liberties were restored. I agree that we should celebrate our democracy and its history but the 12th will never be that. Would need to be a new day, like the anniversary of the Franchise Act or something like that.
@Longshanks1690
@Longshanks1690 2 года назад
@@JohnHillEU If James had won, the same would have been true except in reverse with Catholics being on the winning end, and in England, Parliament would have been abolished, divine right been established as the ethos of the state and the Protestant religion put to the sword. But the only way we get to the point where minority rights are recognised at all is with the Protestant victory in 1690. A Catholic victory would have spelt only tyranny and despair for everyone else.
@megadave1197

@@Longshanks1690 He was never going to win. If it wouldn’t have been William it would have been another civil war and eradication of the monarchy. From Charles I onwards the Parliament was in control and any monarch after was just a figure head.

I also lecturer in the Orange Order and The Royal Arch Purple Chapter. If the Orange Order exists in Australia ( I also THINK that The Royal Black Institution exists in Australia as it does in other countries)why should Australian Orangeism nor be supported? I have been to London and have stood and watched a few differentaly dressed Hari Krishna members walk and chanting while one held ,in my view , a basic bannerette, with the chant written on it. Although it wasn't my faith or culture I enjoyed the unusual act of looking on. I have watched AOH( Roman Catholic) parades I have come.across. Parades eg Roman Catholic Feast/ Saint days happen in Roman Catholic countries and people of other faiths or no faiths"take it in " or ignore it if they want to.Live and let live, thats my view.

Australians have asked me many times about why 12th July parades are allowed to take place given the one sided triumphalism nature of the parades - so either this poor girl is under pressure in front of the tv camera or she is brainwashed by her partner.
