Every interaction with your horse either builds their attachment and cooperation with you, has zero net effect, or has a negative effect on attachment/cooperation. If I could help more people understand that horses are SO INCREDIBLY perceptive of our inner experience, perhaps more people would find it more valuable to become aware of their own thoughts and emotions.
More often than not, we handle horses while talking to someone else, planning their workout, thinking about dinner, brooding over someone cutting you off in traffic...the horse senses all of that in whatever way they are equipped to. Besides, how would you feel if someone came up to you and started dressing you without even a word? How rude would that be? Or if someone was working on your hair while ignoring you, staring off into space, talking on the phone, or distracted enough to pull on your hair making you uncomfortable. You wouldn't accept being dismissed as a living being. Why should the horses?
We are SO buried in externals that we dare not look inside for fear of some emotional boogieman or exhibiting some feelings perceived as weakness or something! The problem is, horses live in that space that humans largely avoid: authenticity. Being who we are right now with how we feel right now and offering an open door between you and the horse right now.
