I agree about the job change to increase your income. I finally got the courage to leave a job I been with for years. I job hopped and ended up increasing my hourly pay from $25 to $35, best decision I ever made. It helped my budgeting journey sooo much.

Hi Katie, your tips are amazing, and I wish I could have watched this video 15 years ago. Things would have been so different now, but I am glad like you said, it is never too late to get started. You have some sharp looking knives in the background! 😄😄

First off I love your hair. Secondly, great video! Also if in a relationship, know the strength and weaknesses of each other. Like my husband cannot stay on budget in the grocery store, he will find all the nice extras to buy. I am not allowed into the sports store, he has to do that or we go waaaay over. Just know each other and try to plan accordingly.

That’s a great tip, Sara! Marc is the same way in the grocery store 😂 somehow he still ends up there sometimes, so I guess we need to do a better job of avoiding that situation 👀

I definitely agree that you need to believe in yourself but if you’re still feeling skeptical then fake it until you make it! Like if you don’t truly think you could reach X financial goal, then just tell yourself I’m gonna pretend to be a person who is great with money, and crushing my goals. Even if it feels like you’re being ironic or sarcastic. Even sarcastic positive self talk (I’m sooooo great with money, can’t you tell I’m just a genius) is better than negative talk.

Yes, that’s so good! Anything is better than negative self talk, and if you at least pretend for a while, you might find that it actually works ☺️

When my husband starts commenting on the seemingly excessive amount and cost of others’ possessions, I remind him not to compare his insides to someone else’s outsides. None of us know what that person’s finances look like. They may be deep in consumer debt, or not even own that stuff, or be one step from bankruptcy or foreclosure, or have been bailed out by family members, or inherited a lot of money or won lotto or have not a dime in savings or retirement or who knows what else? We can only strive to better our own situation by reminding ourselves we haven’t walked in their shoes and have no real idea what their money actually looks like. He who dies with the most toys still dies in the end 😊.

This. This. This! All so true. We never know the full picture, so there’s no point in torturing ourselves by using impossible standards. Thanks, Laura!

Thank you for this video, and the previous one on budgeting. It has been a while since I reviewed actual spending. It seems that the numbers I worked up a while back was working well, but now find I want to be more aggressive about saving. Knowing where my spending habits are helps a lot! One thing I have been doing is to create a sinking fund for those quarterly, semi-annual, and annual expenses. These tend to be bigger numbers, but come around less frequently. Like our auto insurance is billed semiannually and our propane supplier contracts us yearly. Those are no small numbers and when they come around, really hit our bank account. However, putting a couple hundred each pay period into a sinking fund assures that the money is there when we need it. That has been a game changer for me.
@KatieoftheHouse
@KatieoftheHouse 6 дней назад
Such a great tip! Thank you! Sinking funds for those irregular expenses are really life savers! I don’t know how we ever survive without sinking funds 😅

We thought May was a doozer but June is proving to be an even bigger, spending doozer. I must say we have not been doing trips to the Now $1.25 Store, garage sales and thrift stores, etc... We had been kinda, sorta sliding into a bit of a more spending life style drift with some death from a thousand cuts but it we were well-ish ok according to the plan. June provided some bumps to that plan and our budgetary why is now focused on 2024 Bigger Ticket Item #4. We are beginning a period of leaner living yet again.

I’m sorry that you’ve had so many unexpected things lately! I love that you have been able to pivot and cut back a little to make things work though. There are always going to be seasons where we have to cut back and seasons where we can spend a little more, and it’s good to be able to adjust accordingly ☺️

@@KatieoftheHouse This is nothing compared to 2022 for us with respect to needed, unplanned expenses and wide swings in expense costs. And, we were not particularly prepared for them! Our semi-lasie faire budget approach coupled with discipline(ish- as we havent been as lean since mid '22) and our prioritorized purchase/ financial goal list has enabled us to roll with the flow as they say. In general, we currently low spend through the month then budget at the end of the month with what is left over. There for a while, we were budgeting and reserving a pretty reasonable amount (for us) for unplanned expenses then deciding what to do with any left overs. Because our expenses can be so variable, it is much like living with variable income; or the budgeting approach you take with your side income.
