I think the “where did the money go” must be addressed separately as different scouts paid different amounts depending on where they came from and how early they flew out to Korea. The actual Jamboree fee is minimal at $300 usd. The rest of the amount paid is for airfare and pre-jamboree tours/accommodations/meals which are purely optional.
Nope. You pay a lot for jamboree plus you have to pay for your own transport. Went to sylvain lake Alberta jamboree with my patrol in 2011 or 2012. Figured they profited around 2 million. Food was skim and horrible, stations were horribly setup. Cleanliness was disgusting. They pretty much take your cash and throw you in a spot with your tents. Paid over 10k to be there and prob got 300$ worth of food for the week. It’s a cash grab
I think you have quite missed the point. Even if it was free, the budget should have been dedicated to the jamboree for things like food, shelter, sanitation and not for the self gratification of those associated with the purse strings.
I heard from South Korean that their government spent a lot of money for this international event, so the Jamboree would be more successful from 1991 when South Korea also hosted World Jamboree. However more than half of it being used by the corrupt officials to went vacation to Europe or anything not even related to Scout. Not to mention they supposed to be already prepared for around 6 years for this event. So yeah, even The South Korean really dissapointed, sad, and angry about the situation, they demanding their government to investigate where all the tax money goes. However, a lot of countries decided to keep supporting this event and stay until the Jamboree is over, and the scouts from my country said it's actually not that bad (but, well, the scouts in my country trained by soldiers, especially in natural disaster aftermath survival) and the chaos in the first days is handled quickly by the South Korea's government and the locals. Although hot weather and heat wave indeed is too much for the kids from cold climate, but the kids from tropical or hot climate countries (they said even for them, is hot too) in general handle the situation better.
I’m Korean and this year’s Jamboree is a big controversy. So much money has been spent, but the site is underwhelming. It’s being reported so many government workers went overseas travels with that money, and corruption should be investigated further. Foreigners might think maybe that money went to hiring kpop celebrities for the concert, but that is also not the case. At KBS, the broadcast network owned by the government, kpop idols perform at a near 400 usd for promotional purposes. This time, the government used KBS to organize the concert and threatened entertainment companies with popular singers to participate in the Jamboree concert. They threatened these companies that manage (Ive, New Jeans, etc.) with tax investigations. So the question remains unsolved as to where all the money went.
My daughter - the Swedish contingent - does not want to go home. When we asked her about her experience of the camp site itself, her comment was: "It's a camp". She is impressed that the university they live in could organize karaoke competitions and taekwondo demonstrations. She has worked and saved money and paid half the cost.
I was at the national jamboree in West Virginia when this was all going down. I heard a bit about the world jamboree while I was there but I didn’t know it was this bad. Really shows you what organizations care more about their customers and which care more about money, just hope everyone made it out ok
You can't blame them for the weather. Record heatwaves have been all over the northern hemisphere and this typhoon sounds so big that the entire country is affected, so unfortunately, nowhere is safe for people in tents. That is unfortunate, but the lack of planning, and corruption of the committee, is to be severely condemned. I expect to see mass sackings, and maybe even jail time. South Koreans are very proud of their country and people and this will be a severely shaming event.
No shade, camping on reclaimed landfill , fleas and mosquitos . Terrible! Couldn't they have camped in a mountain campsite with trees and a brook ? Rather than an open flat filled swampland.. 😢
We have a kid on Jamboree too. Of course we haven't expected the conditions of 5 star hotel, neither our kid has. Oppositely we expected (hoped) our scout is prepared for camping in different conditions and he will still find the way to use this great opportunity to meet new people and cultures, to get inspired, and in perspective to become may be a bit more open minded and better person. As far as i see it - Jamboree is not a meeting of princesses, it is a meeting of scouts. If parents are not sure their kid can do Jamboree, may be they could have valued the risks and kids abilities better and may be they might have decided to stay home. Each trip deserves a good preparation - learning about nature, weather, culture, etc. I guess we parents can share the responsibility of preparing a kid for this long trip to Jamboree too.
They're not expecting to be treated as princes/princesses. But they should be given a decent place to stay. Kids shouldn't be staying in a tent on a very hot weather of 35C.That's just inhuman. Also, they paid a lot of money just to be there so the least they could do is to make sure they got clean toilets.
An absolute mess, is normal that only 70 personal were cleaning the toilets and all the camp with 40000 people?? Many people think this is an extreme experience but is not the case, is a cultural experience, the extreme were put for the organization, lack of shade and trees, hot water to drink, not enough food....... the incription fee in my country was 1000 euros....... the travel 3500++ more minium.....
The disaster of World Scout Jamboree was partly caused by force majeure such as typhoon and heat etc. and partly caused by mismanagement. More half of mistakes could be preventable if the South Korean authorities were more professionable.
No equipment to cook food...I remember during my scout days, we have to bring our own cooking tools, woods for fire or bags of charcoal and a little stove or improvised one coz that's part of it. Idk if it's the same for scouts nowadays.
My Scouts have everything they need when they camp but they can´t carry those in this kind of travel you can´t carry a gas kitchen in a plane that is what the organization takes the money 1000 dolars for teen @@indigo901
Korea has to open breakfast shops also because ive been to all the main cities on vacation and theres literally no spots open specially early mornings .

They paid for the experience, and they walked out once they started experiencing things. I’ve been to 2 WSJ and the West Virginia Jamboree, I was setting up tents in pouring rain, in pitch black darkness using our headlamps, for my contingent and others with no help from the organizers, just with other scout volunteers (ist). To be clear, that was not our jobs as IST, that was good ol’ scouting volunteering, because that’s what we do. Toilets were overflowing, there was literal shit in the campsite. The above is the description of a successful and highly organized jamboree by North America (USA, Canada, and Mexico). In conclusion, the organizers fucked up, like they always do, but the Typhoon killed the event before they had a chance to turn it around. I think it was salvageable, because the last one ended in success but started as a shit show. (Literally, anyone from campsite echo can account for the 💩 overflow and smells for days on end)
Okay, now add that to a heatwave of 35 degrees Celsius and 70% humidity. Then stay in a tent for many days that doubles the heat because there is no proper ventilation.
@@videosaver1934 yes, that’s typical summer camp and tents. Don’t get me started about summer camp in Louisiana/Mississippi. Maybe when we’ll go to Poland for the next WSJ it will be better, as the summers in Northern Europe are a bit milder than the tropical South Eastern Asia.
@@antoniscon007 Well yeah, that's what you get if you're actually camping. But this Jamboree event was organized for cultural exchange and entertainment programs. The kids paid $6000 to get there. This Jamboree was not meant to teach them "survival".
Let us spread positivity! There might be lapses, inconvenience, and discomfort but I still commend the Korean government and the World Scout Jamboree organizers in general. Things got improved and they did big effort to make it better for everyone. Salute to the scouts who really have the "SCOUT SPIRIT". My son is there. In one of my phone talks with him, "Mom, it is really hot here but it is bearable..It is so fun to be with other foreigners, trading things together is exciting". I am proud of my son. At a young age (12), he learned endurance and how to enjoy with others amidst difficulties. Scouting it is!
hello. welcome to korea.. um.. as a Korean..... I'm so sorry. The hosting company is at fault. All Koreans are sorry for the Jamboree crew....🥲 I hope you don't have any bad memories in Korea. ...I hope you can get a refund
I've never understood these jamborees. To me scouting is about getting together in a beautiful natural area, pitching a tent, hiking, swimming, and sitting around a campfire. These jamborees are so huge there is no chance of doing any of that, even in a well run venue.
I think they have it easy. Once we went for camping competitions in Kenya and it rained throughout. The guys had to raise their tents, we had to figure out how to cook with 'wet' wood. The girls were allowed to sleep in classrooms since the camping grounds were on a school field. Over 10 years later and I'll never forget that experience.
I went to a Camporee in east county San Diego back in the late 60s and it was awesome, lots of activities and competitions, probably the most fun event I ever did with the Boy Scouts. I heard about Jamborees and wished I could go to one but they cost a lot of money, the Camporee was $50 and in the late 60s that was a lot of money so you can only imagine an international event would cost much more.
The quality of tents will not stand against the typhoon. Great they could evacuate before the American mothers waging lawsuits. Is Jamboree camping or glamping???
The Korea selected JeonRaBukDo for the children to learn how to survive in harsh environment. And Select Seoul to show their excellent culture and social system and K-pop was proved it. - Joke
I understand that many people on here are quick to judge the Scouts on expecting a "five star experience." Yeah, that's one bit of it. I've been to two National Jamborees (in 2013 and 2017). We would like an experience that is fun, but also safe. This whole venue did not seem prepared at all for pretty much anything. Regardless of weather. Isn't the motto, Be Prepared?
This is simple.. if you want to be comfortable stay at home or stay in a hotel..it's called camping so half of it is survival..this is the time to use what you learn and use your expertise!!!
What you don't understand is this also happened when South Korea was hit by a heatwave. This is the hottest in their history, 38 degrees Celsius! Don't make it sound like the UK and the US were a bunch of princesses. They were not used to this extreme hot weather like tropical countries. A kid could die from that extreme heat.
The biggest problem would be the lack of minimum hygiene and safety management. Despite the huge budget invested in it. Most of that budget would have gone into the pockets of South Korean politicians. All the participation fees, which the children of the participating countries worked hard for over a year, were wasted. Korea ruined the dreams and efforts of children.
I wonder how many of these parents whining to their local news channels asked their kids if they were okay with doing so. My son would be mortified if I went on TV to play helicopter mom and cry that a scouting event in the summer in Korea was "too hot." He's enjoyed the time in Korea and was sad they were forced to leave SaeManGeum.
Korea organizing committee spending money on cruise trips to Australia and in Asia, trips around Europe and undisclosed business trips, and all led by a minister of equality who has zero experience
This is scouting yall 😂 what do you expect? 5 star hotel? Disneyland tour? You guys just make your child so weak. The real scout is about survive, camping in the jungle and make your own food. Heatwave, flood, rain, mud, lack of water is part of it.
This is completely unbelievable. The mother, the US scouts ought to consider legal action against the Korean government's Yoon administration for all these nonsense. Beyond the unfortunate climate circumstances, the more significant issue is the complete lack of preparedness stemming from the government's unprofessionalism. They neglected children's heath, safety, hygiene, and fundamental human rights such as access to food and suitable habitats. This administration seems fixated only on displaying condescension and is essentially holding scouts from around the world hostage for the sake of K-pop even with an impending typhoon approaching. There appears to be a misguided belief that concluding the event with K-pop performers will magically resolve all issues and bring about a sense of success. Shame on them.
How many of you know about the shitty hot humid summers in Asia? Temperatures exceed 35 degrees Celsius and humidity exceeds 70% even though it's outside. That's what scouts are for, you guys say, but if you understood the situation, you wouldn't be buying the same service. And you would surely complain.
Didn't conduct proper risk matrix. If there are double major risk like heatwave and then typhoon, the visit should be cancelled. Wonder who benefit from this scam.
This was scheduled in 2017 in which the democrates overtook the politocal power in korea. The korean jamberee asked for 20 billon dolllars for the event. And the bill was passed. And boom money is gone.
Korea is an amazing country. That said, they kind of messed this one up. Please don't think badly of Korea, the people are amazing and kind. Anyone can mess up.
Unfortunately, Korea is like an insecure girlfriend-a very insecure girlfriend. Koreans are always worried about what foreigners think of them, and the Korean government has gone to great lengths in recent years to spread K-pop and Korean culture in its quest for “soft” power and national branding. I’m sure most Koreans would like to think of this incident as an aberration, but it’s not. Inadequate planning, disregard for safety, and government corruption have been longstanding and common issues in Korean society. This is only the latest example.
hello. welcome to korea.. um.. as a Korean..... I'm so sorry. The hosting company is at fault. All Koreans are sorry for the Jamboree crew....🥲 I hope you don't have any bad memories in Korea. I hope you can get a refund 😢
But remember - whether it was what you paid for or not - you did let your child go. As the parent, and your kid may not like you for the decision, you gave permission for them to go. Lesson learned? Only do camps where they stay in hotels 4-star minimum.
Wow. Gaslighting and victim=blaming of minors and their parents to hide/justify the incompetence of the adults - the organizers. Unsanitary conditions, lack of food/water/tents, etc. - basics that were not addressed until the media attention.
We all had food and everything was good every problem organisation was facing was getting solved by the next morning We all must say thank you to Korea for everything extra they did and the perfect evacuation plan ❤❤
The scouts aren't the ones complaining, it's the NSOs that made the decision for the UK and US to leave, and it's a FEW whining parents going on TV. The actual youth participants wanted to stay. When was the last time you spent any time outdoors and away from your computer? ;)
Yup don’t spend all that money to go to jamboree. We went to Alberta for Canadian jamboree in 2012 i believe. Dirty, shortage of food, horrible planning. It’s a cash grab. Was just horrible and ridiculous. My patrol and I could of all went to Mexico for a week in an all inclusive for the same cost.
the entire thing was a scam. the price includes the cost of flight and cost of food and the accommodation. depending on the country, others paid up to $10000 per child. all that is gone and that forced them to buy necessities like water and toilet paper out of their own pockets. the cost of the evacuation for the UK team by bus came to about $2million dollars. who pays for that? obviously the Korean government can't because they don't have such money. they stole it.
If I found out my child had showered with an adult I'd be far more than furious! I wouldn't be sending my child into a situation with so many strangers anyhow. Call me overprotective. Im okay with that.
@@mahatmasloth6543 that's irrelevant. I've never sent my young child overseas to a pool with thousand of strangers without one of their parents. If I have been to either of those places has nothing to do with if I'd send my child to them without a parent. And sending them overseas alone, is a whole other story. I'm aware that this is a wonderful experience for many children and if they and their parents have decided it's good for them, than great. It's just not something I would choose. And that is okay. Live and let live.
@JustDeLuca if you are willing to trust these ppl with your child on an overseas trip for an extended period of time, why would you not trust them to bathe in the same locker room. They aren't bathing each other. But I do appreciate your viewpoint, probably keep your kid at home
@@mahatmasloth6543 well I'm not willing to send my young kid without a parent on an overseas trip. So I don't need to worry about that. In any case two of my children are adults, another is not far off and the youngest doesn't need an overseas trip. So all is well in my world. And I guess the other take is that as Indivuduals we've all seen and been through different lives and had differnet experiences that shape our views on many subjects. I'm certain it's an amazing experience for many children and something they will never forget and always cherish. I'm happy for them. I'm also aware of the world we live in and the probability of that large of a group that there will be children who's lives will be changed forever in a negative way. I'd be extremely glad to be wrong about that. But history tells me otherwise.
These extreme conditions are situations that will not easily go away in their lifetimes as young scouts and as adults later on. Words that were emphasized by our scout instructors in my boy scout days are "Improvised" and "Self-reliant." No cooking area? No tent area? Jeez. Clear up the field and do whatever you can to remedy the situation. Improvise. They should look at these as learning opportunities where they could learn TOGETHER. It does not matter what country you come from. Improvise. Pool resources, whatever you have, rather than complain. You're there anyway. Make the most out of the situation. These are your natural obstacles, no need to set up any obstacle course. This is it. Life will get tougher in the coming years. Be mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually prepared for it. Learn to pre-empt looming disasters if you could in your lifetimes.
The temperature is over 35 degrees Celsius and the humidity is over 70%. This is the kind of environment where you can get heatstroke just by being outside for a few hours. Even military training is better prepared for this. They are not soldiers.
please show some empathy. it's not meant to be a hardcore survival training. when you have girls and children that needs special attention, they need a bit more privacy and care. you can improvise but the lack of food and calory intake makes them unable to do regular activities. the scouts did nothing but sat on the ground all day and chewed through all their snacks. in fact this can be child abuse.
Of course you'll say that because NONE of your kids are there. FYI, that heatwave was the hottest temperature in Korean history. Maybe for people who are used in tropical weather they can survive but people from cold countries this was an extreme health issue. Just imagine putting an African kid who didn't have any experience with snow suddenly placed in Alaska.
Isn’t scouting about camping out in the wild and doing things in nature….without amenities like showers and bathrooms and everything provided to you? Or is this some cushy scouting they do now where it’s not like REAL camping? That’s what it sounds like….like they expect everything provided instead of roughing it….so how is that really teaching you about anything and survival skills? Nature doesn’t have showers….you bathe where you get the chance. And sometimes when you have to survive in nature you have to deal with imperfect weather…and no place can help it if there’s a heat wave happening….many places are experiencing heat waves this summer….but aren’t you supposed to be learning how to survive these weather conditions as a scout? Or again….is this not REAL camping and survival training…but fake simulated camping and survival? Sounds like fake simulated to me….and that won’t save anyone if they are ever doing the REAL camping and survival…..you’re not teaching them anything with the fake stuff.
They're not there to learn survival. Jamborees were organized for cultural exchange and to establish friendships through activities. Also, these were thousands of KIDS we're talking about. Not grown men! Is it right for them to stay in just tents for many days in the hottest temperature in Korean history??? I bet you wouldn't even last two days in those tents.
Wow I know that she is worried but tbh jambore and scout purpose to make the kid could protect themselves on any situation!!! , doest that mean they could be sick yess it is the reality of harsh climate. the expectation is high and you expect bedding in storm 😂 ok I know I being harsh but the western media is soo good make worse of the scenario 😅 noway I could believe this after seeing all the scout enjoying kpop konser yesterday . 😂also they have cafeteria there what a luxuries for scout
The Korean government stepped up a day after this news broke out. Most Korean citizens were enraged. This was humiliating to them so they made sure that they made up for it.
no outrage from Korean parents? shame! you know it's bad when even a hardcore survivalist like Bear Grylls didn't look happy and has shown some concern. he tried to boost the morale by saying "we are scouts, we can overcome anything" but you can tell on his face he was not impressed by what he saw. 1000 people hospitalized. now parents and friends are all worrying and praying from halfway across the globe because they realized Korea is a country that doesn't care about future generations. when these youngsters go back home, what do you think they will say to their future generations? years, decades, centuries from now.
Korea tried their best to improve the situation and scouts from many countries appreciated effort put in by Korea. Most scouts said it was nearly as bad as media portrayed.
